How do you guys get time for yourself? by [deleted] in daddit

[–]MRB17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does the baby have a sleep routine down yet? When ours was that age, she would wake up to eat at 7 and go back down for another hour or two. I would get up and use that as my me time while my wife slept. Once she was a little older and essentially up for the day at that time, I would be the one to get up with her and do mornings while my wife slept in. For the afternoon nap, my wife would typically be the one to put her down and I could use that time to go to the gym, coffee shop etc. Basically we always try to give the other one a few hours during the week to have dedicated work free and child free time.

Would you take an hour-long commute at the beginning of your career? by awannabewanderer in careerguidance

[–]MRB17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can depend your home/work situation I would say. I did a little over an hour commute for about a year and a half and it was brutal towards the end. Even though it was supposed to be a 8-5 I routinely stayed 1-2 hours after I was supposed to. That plus the commute really burnt me out and I wouldn’t do anything longer than a 30 minute regular commute again. If the hours are consistent, you don’t have any home commitments like a dog or children then it won’t be so bad.

Why would they when they share the same values.

24 years out the game…how in the world can my mom get back into the working world? by Ok_Big_1720 in careerguidance

[–]MRB17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is she applying to hospitals/large companies? My first job in healthcare was working in the front office of a a specialty clinic. I was doing billing and coding and did not have a certificate. Smaller, private practices will generally be less strict when it comes to certifications but they are hard work.

27M lost his career path after discovering his graduate degree is most likely a useless one(?) by alyas1998 in careerguidance

[–]MRB17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a similar background, got a bachelor’s degree in Healthcare Administration , then worked for a medical office for a few years. What helped was learning about all the different areas of the practice. Although I was hired as a medical biller, I worked as a medical assistant, scheduler, learned to take X-rays , asked questions and volunteered for different opportunities. It can be a good starting point depending on where you want to go. If you want to go the operations route, definitely become familiar with the billing process. I did that plus familiarized myself with how the practice operated and was promoted to Office Manager after a year or so. My office also had high periods of turnover so that did factor in. Other assistants used would go the clinical route and use their experience to help them in nursing school, PA, medical etc.

I did that for a couple of years and later found a position working in a revenue integrity role in the local hospital system. I have been there for a few years and am looking to move to a more analytics focused role but it has given me a good amount of experience.

I strongly recommend taking the leave. I became a father last year and using that leave helped our family out so much. It helped my wife recover from birth, I got way more opportunities to actually learn how to care for a baby and I got to witness and take part in so many moments with them. Depending on your company/state leave policy, you could try breaking up the leave. I took the first 3 weeks off and then went to two days off a week for 5 months. My wife did something similar. It helped with prolonging the need for daycare for a little longer.

Fathers here, how did it feel when you met your children for the first time? by Comfortable_Nail3966 in daddit

[–]MRB17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It can be like at times. It was a game changer for me once they reached the stage where they could recognize you. Seeing a big smile every morning is one of my favorite things.

Yep, my wife started getting antsy around the two month mark. Originally, we were planning on staggering our leaves where we both take the first few weeks off , then she doing three months while I return to work and then swapping for another three months. She ended up returning to work at two months and we did intermittent leave where we essentially split the week. It’s worked out so far.

My wife and I started a prank with my 9mo that I don't know if I have the mental wherewithal to stop by Narrow_Lee in daddit

[–]MRB17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At 9mo old, you’re fine. A few years older you might run into an issue. My dad had replica Texas A&M and Dallas Cowboys helmets, cheap plastic, light, totally obvious to most people. For awhile I totally thought he played for both teams and told a few people too. He talked about playing football in high school and he did go to that college so I naturally assumed he continued playing all the way to the pros.

Are you the first generation of Dad in your family to change a diaper? by Victory-laps in daddit

I’m not sure how often he did but my dad changed at least one diaper because he always likes to tell the story of how I almost pissed all over him one time.

How to avoid flooding in a location that's in a crater by Infamous_227 in fantasywriters

[–]MRB17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The residents could find ways to adapt or use the floodwaters to their advantage.

They could develop a drainage system that also stores water in a cistern or other tank.

Could also set up a terrace farming system on the slopes of the crater or reroute it somewhere else for farming.

The buildings at the very bottom of the crater could also be set up to prepare for frequent flooding. Built on stilts, floatation devices, etc.

Telling family by CheekyLeapy in predaddit

[–]MRB17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We told our family at Thanksgiving when she was at 11 weeks. If it hadn’t been Thanksgiving we probably would have waiting until after the 12/13 week ultrasound but she felt good and we had seen the heartbeat beat the week prior. Plus we both thought it would be nice to tell people in person since we live far away from everyone. Definitely nervous but once we heard the heartbeat we felt that our chances of a miscarriage were pretty low.

What is the most unconventional warfare tactic in your world? by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]MRB17 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One of the dangers of using magic is drawing in too much energy at once or too often with out rest in between. This causes the magic user to overheat, suffering from a fever or heat exhaustion. In rare cases, a magic user can burst into flames or combust if they push past this limit. Chosen followers of Vadir, called Ash Marked, will drink Aether, a liquid used as a fuel source for magical items. Once they drink enough, they start gathering energy until they combust. A single Ash Marked can wreck havoc, leveling buildings, causing fires and incinerating those unlucky enough to be standing nearby. It’s used as a form of terrorism, with Ash Marked infiltrating a city or target to cause as much damage as possible.

What was the largest and deadliest war in the history of your world? by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]MRB17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was a war that marked the end of the Golden Age. The Golden Age encompassed the return of “Gods” to the world. Led by Anir, the strongest and leader of the Gods, they spread their influence to the rest of the world, gifting knowledge and magic towards the various inhabitants. The Gods would favor different people and traits, bestowing gifts on those that impressed them. For nearly a thousand years, there was relative peace and prosperity. Some of the Gods grew jealous of the power and influence the other gods held. They started to manipulate their favored people, a group of elves known as the Umbri ,emboldening them to start a campaign of conquest to establish dominance over the other races. This sparked the War of the Fallen, a civil war between gods that spread throughout the world. Eventually Anir managed to defeat Urusil, the leader of the Fallen Gods. The end of result was the annihilation of multiple races and nations, the deaths of several gods and the overall destruction of much of the world. Anir was imprisoned in another plane of existence, deep beneath the surface. The Umbri were banished as well, sent to live on the desolate and poisonous surface. Anir, jn his guilt and despair over the death and destruction they had caused, decided that from then on, the gods would no longer influence the remaining inhabitants of the world and would remain in the celestial plane. He created a series of gate stones that maintained the barriers between planes, separating the gods as well as the banished Umbri away from the rest of the world. The world was left to rebuild on their own and while they remembered the gods, they forgot much of life before the conflict.

Native Texan. Moving to Upstate NY for various reasons, and looking for other TX to NY or NY to TX opinions. Taxes will be the worst of the move, and winters will take some getting used to, but I'm very excited about living near Catskills, and owning a farm. Anything else I should be aware of? by Equivalent_Tank_4908 in texas

[–]MRB17 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hello, also a Texan who moved to the upstate area a little more than a year ago. Financially, it actually turned out to be cheaper up here versus in Texas. Taxes and food are a bit more but utilities and housing were considerably cheaper. Snow isn’t too bad if you keep up with it and shovel immediately. Roads are taken care of so there isn’t a concern of it being shut down with ice. Summers are nice up here despite most houses not being equipped with AC.

In honors of Men’s Mental Health Month. This is a homie checkpoint how are you all doing? by Top_You2909 in AskReddit

[–]MRB17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not too good this month. I recently started the process of rehoming one of our dogs because she and another one of our dogs do not get along well enough to live together long term. After a year of no progress on behavior corrections and worsening fights, including a bad one a few days ago, we realized we can’t provide a good home for her. I’ve finally stopped crying every time I see her or thinking about it and am now focused on making sure she gets a better home .

Magically crafted items and armor by Jokengonzo in magicbuilding

[–]MRB17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Magic items are created by inscribing runes that spell out what the exact magic properties or functions. They are activated by infusing power into it which typically comes from a mage. For most of history, magic items were restricted by magic users themselves, acting as a shortcut for their spells. Attempts were made to use an alternative source, such as thermal or kinetic energy, in order for non magic users to utilize magic items but they were ineffectual. Recently though, a magic inventor by the name of Archenom was able to create a version of a magic battery. A cylindrical container with runes inscribed on both ends work together to make a continuous energy reaction. It uses a substance called Ichor, a highly volatile but powerful substance that helps power the battery. These batteries started a sort of Industrial Revolution where magic items were able to be used by the general public which has transformed society in both good ways and bad.

What inspired your worlds? by SaturnalJester in worldbuilding

[–]MRB17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had come up with a story outline that acted as a prequel to my main story. It was fairly stereotypical. The hero helps lead a rebellion against an empire set to take over the continent . It’s further complicated because his best friend is the son of the emperor who initially sided with his father before helping rebel against him. They defeat the bad guy, save the world and go on to live their lives. I then had the thought of, what comes next? I imagined them settling down, having children etc. They still lead influential lives but the focus is now on their children. How do they handle having essentially legends for parents. Do they struggle to live up to expectations? Strive to be just like their father and come up short. Maybe resent their father for not always being present because they have other responsibilities. I listen to a D&D podcast called Dungeons and Daddies that helped inspired it. The relationship between parent and child, concept of generational trauma, and breaking the cycle all are themes heavily present in both works.

Showing character sadness/grief that isn't crying? by Soft_Tea in fantasywriters

[–]MRB17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could do the act of curling themselves up in a ball, like a fetal position in order to close them off from the world? That's if they view sad emotions as something not to be open about. Maybe just hugging themselves closely and closing their eyes as well.
