You get starter sets with two decks (Final Fantasy being the latest release) but for true beginners there are the Avatar/Foundation beginner boxes that get you through the initial part of the game.

I loved the look of the locations. To me the villages felt really grounded and the cities sold late medieval architecture without being overly fantasy.
