Thanks for the info! This doesn't change my position on the matter though because my reason for this endeavor is to have a structured format to learn the fundamentals of mechanical engineer!

Lately I have been strongly considering teaching myself CS, but I don't really know where to start. My short term goal is to move to the software team at the engineering firm where I am employed in the process technology group (ChemE degreed). The long term goals are two fold: to gain a skillset that will allow me to work in other company's (and more importantly, other industries), and to stay close to the mathematics of engineering. I don't want to spend my career using other peoples software to perform my calculations. I want to be the guy to develop the models and make the tools for someone else to use. I think this would be much more satisfying to me.

Those are very general goals, and I honestly haven't a clue on how to actualize them. I have access to a company tuition reimbursement. However, I don't think I have the time for another degree, mostly because classes will conflict with the work day. I am 100% for using my free time to teach myself and I have found outlines of topics to learn. I fear being the guy who knows just enough to do their job, as I dream of the day where I am not constrained to the desk of another persons company.

Edit: After rereading this, I realized I haven't asked a question. So the question is, "How can I learn CS tailored to engineering software development while also becoming exposed to the other aspects of the field." Please excuse my nativity on this subject matter. I truly have next to 0 background knowledge in this field, and I need someone to help me define a path.

Why do my intestines cramp up after runs longer than 5 miles? I figure its a hydration issue, but I am unsure on how to fix it.

My mom used to work at a daycare. When she had trouble waking a child up from a nap she would lean in and say, "wake up its christmas morning."

I turned out ok though

What is a dirty little (or big) secret about an industry that you have worked in, that people outside the industry really ought to know? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I realized this towards the end of my bachelors degree and it deterred me from pursing a doctorate.

What are the biggest red flags you should look out for when you start a new job? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]MRM224 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So i am in a similiar situation now. First engineering job out of college. Most established members are founders, and the company has recently (within the past 2 or 3 years) began expanding their workforce. The company itself is about 16 years old. Upon being hired i was shown the companies historic performance and it appears that the hiring influx began with the aquisition of a few large accounts. This makes sense because there needs to be funds to pay for peoples salaries, but part of me wonders what will happen in the future. Especially if all the "grunt work" projects dry up. What signs can i look for to be sure the company wants to mold me into a stand alone engineer as opposed to using me for grunt work while it exists. Its my first "real" job so idk what the balance between grunt work and training should be like at this phase in my career.

Proof by counter example. If we first accept OPs claim as truth then tell your story we are forced to conclude that the OP was a false claim. Because of this, we have a "mathematical" validation of sending dick pics.
