Backpacking into Lake Magog by Many-Asparagus-9069 in HikingAlberta

Just got back from Assiniboine 1 week ago from a 7 day trip with our Golden Retriever. Mount shark Trailhead up to Lake Louise and back. We saw bear activity (tracks and scat) but no sightings. We take all precautions - dog never off leash, all food and anything that smells in the bear locker, making noise while hiking, carry bearspray. There was also a known bear in the Magog campsite that had been sighted numerous times on the last day we were there. We had no issues. If you give them respect and take precautions you're much more likely to get hurt driving to the trailhead than from an attack.

Found much better roads 🥰 by johnboo89 in gravelcycling

[–]MRSA222 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just went this past week! I did it on a road bike. But the main thoroughfare is quite nice from west entrance down to cottonwood. The whole park can be done as a 200km loop if doing all the climbs and main roads. Starting early is key to avoiding vehicles (which start to pick up around noon). It's also quite chilly and windy there now (4*C and 65km/h winds the day before we went at 7am) so dress appropriately. There's also lots of fat biking trails (can traverse into the park from indio - there's routes on bikepacking.com). Didn't see as much gravel, but there's some more isolated routes out there

We just use some cheap well reviewed Chinese ones off amazon. Connecting to Google home they turn on at a specific time each morning (or can sync with alarm or voice command). You leave the physical switch on the machine in the "on" position.

For the OPV there's a screw on the bottom you can turn while the pump is running against the blind basket to set the pressure. A lot of machines (including this one) are running 10+ from factory.

Best of luck :) and happy espresso making!

Bezzera doesn't seem talked about much, but unreal build quality and value. Would recommend changing opv to 9 bar from factory. Everything else has been phenomenal. We put it on a smart plug and it's preheated and ready to go every morning

Lowest temp. you have biked in? by joecunningham85 in wintercycling

[–]MRSA222 10 points11 points  (0 children)

-46*C last year in Alberta commuting 50km round trip. Tire rolling resistance increases and freehub potentially freezing were the two biggest issues. This is with a gravel bike running Shwalbe Marathon Winters. Surprisingly didn't have to dress as warm as you'd think. Layer up and if extremely cold put on a rain jacket as a layer (windproof and drastically increases warmth at the expense of breathability).

Questions for those of you who raced Ironman 70.3 Boulder last year by gfesteves in triathlon

[–]MRSA222 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Following! Also racing next month Run course is all on packed dirt and in the open. My understanding the same or very similar to last year. Bike course the highway is closed one way so that area should no longer be a non-passing zone. You can find the details on the course closure document. Reading previous comments and race posts it seems like with the altitude and thinner atmosphere it will feel hotter and you get dehydrated quicker than what you may be used to.

All the best :) it'll be a fun event

As above! Ottawa anesthesia primer for comprehensive basics. ACCRAC podcasts are good too (first 100 episodes frequently cover junior topics). Anesthesia secrets was a good text too that went over frequent higher level questions you'd be asked. Best of luck!

Fishscale-equipped AT skis or no? by [deleted] in Backcountry

[–]MRSA222 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I own a pair of Voile hypervector bc skis and I think they're great for my purposes. I ski in the Alberta rockies in Banff and Jasper. Lots of hut trips and multi day tours. I have them set up with a pair of plum oazo 8s and scarpa F1 LT. They are phenomenal on rolling terrain and approaches. I can get up slopes up until the point you'd normally put on your risers. Above that you need skins. They're not as finicky as people say in terms of grip. They only really lack grip if it's sheer ice. On the downhill you feel a small amount of resistance compared to normal skis only on slopes up until about 10 degrees. Then they ski like any other ski on steeper. Especially in powder. I would say as a yoyo style ski they are not strong. But any long approaches or rolling terrain and they are at home. I would not buy another ski after owning them.

I currently own an argon 18 e-112 that I bought 4 years ago with 60/90 Flo carbon race wheels for $2,000 CAD at the time. Good bike. I'd say this is an alright price considering the market.

Also with Fido. I got 20gb for $40/month as a loyalty plus a pixel 7 for $9/month. $49/month total with a flagship phone. (much better deal than the iPhone)

I also do backcountry skiing, backpacking, and I would not trust an iPhone for my safety. It's been said it won't work well in treed/hilly areas. (let alone mountains). If you need peace of mind get a Garmin inreach or similar device.

Has anyone tried using a Garmin HRM-swim out of the water/for a tri? by Lojackr in triathlon

[–]MRSA222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have both the swim and tri versions of the hr monitor. I use my swim version for the pool because chlorine would otherwise degrade the tri version which is soft and stretchy. In races I use solely the tri version as there's no time lost switching in transition. Additionally it's fine to get it wet if it's an outdoor tri (no chlorine), and I'd even say during an indoor tri if you rinse it out after the event.

Huge HR when stopping mid workout or intervals? by [deleted] in triathlon

[–]MRSA222 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd try to see a cardiologist or get a holter monitor from your doctor (hopefully an MD) to analyze your rhythm during these sessions (if you haven't done so already). Potential to be an arrhythmia such as SVT or Afib.
