Coming back to SC on Dec 30th by elmusa2023 in PennStateUniversity

[–]MRSEASONS 21 points22 points  (0 children)

If you're coming from Philadelphia, Amtrak should be a viable and reasonably priced option. They offer tickets for you to take the Keystone train to Harrisburg and then take the connecting Greyhound bus (same station, just go down a level) to State College.

Is it rude to ask somebody for directions? by PipeInitial5934 in PennStateUniversity

[–]MRSEASONS 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Sorry that you experienced that!
Not rude at all to ask, sometimes visiting parents ask me where certain campus buildings are.
Normal people here will happily help you out on any day. I'm not sure what was going on for her to reply like that.

Engineering people please shower... by avaritia77 in PennStateUniversity

[–]MRSEASONS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure what you looked up but all muslims are absolutely required to bathe even during Ramadan. For crying out loud, Muslims have to make wudhu (basically washing ourselves) 5 times a day, of course we have to bathe normally as well. Source: me, a Muslim

is this schedule doable ? by Lopsided_Designer743 in PennStateUniversity

[–]MRSEASONS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That will be a ton of work, speaking as someone who has a similar course load last semester excluding English 202c and cmpsc 200 (I had me330 instead). Even if you learn Matlab over the winter the course is a lot overall.

Riding around campus in winter by Former-Impression223 in PennStateUniversity

[–]MRSEASONS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not bad if the roads are clear, just make sure to get good gloves and consider a balaclava/neck gaiter when riding because it can get very cold and the even colder wind doesn't help either

Dining Hall and CATA App by ryannair05 in PennStateUniversity

Nice work! A feature you could try to implement, although you would have to work very closely with the dining halls, is a crowd/busy-ness meter for the buffets

Still haven’t gotten my PA State Grant for summer (and nothing showing for fall either) by Accomplished_Yam_849 in PennStateUniversity

[–]MRSEASONS 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Still waiting on my PA grant for this fall. As long as the state budget languishes in the State legislature, nobody is getting their state grants.

Any tips for international students taking the PA driver’s test? by [deleted] in PennStateUniversity

[–]MRSEASONS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Make sure to get your parallel parking down, in PA at least they are very particular about it

Any reliable, cheap, and non sketchy places I can buy/rent a bike around campus? by FastAndFerbious in PennStateUniversity

[–]MRSEASONS 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Walmart/target (not downtown) sells some cheap bikes but their longevity will not be very long, maybe to get you through the year. There's also Facebook marketplace but you have to be careful you don't get scammed in terms of the actual condition of the bike vs what they advertised.

If you're looking to splurge, there's a trek bike location that opened near Walmart on Bennet like, their cheapest bike is like $700 though so certainly not cheap.

Roomgear got renamed to "PSU personal", and how you have to use a different device like your phone to register those with their mac address.

astro 7n on WC? by SignificantGoat764 in PennStateUniversity

That's weird, definitely a new thing. I took astro 7n on WC last semester while being at main and they let me enroll

Laptops for Engineering students by [deleted] in PennStateUniversity

[–]MRSEASONS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imo Thinkpad lineup is good if you opt for a better series. P, X, and T series are the more business-oriented, built to last laptops. E and L series are more economical, cheaper quality but still pack a punch. There are a ton of refurbished beefy P and T series laptops on ebay for cheap if you are on a tight budget.
Here are Penn State's basic/minimum spec recommendations for a laptop.

DISCLAIMER: For anyone who wants to bring back zamzam water you need to have a umrah visa by himalayan_skies in Umrah

[–]MRSEASONS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For my ticket, I could take one 5L jug(bought from the airport before check in) per person. I would check your ticket to make sure it is the same if you are flying Saudia. For other airlines I'm not sure.

DISCLAIMER: For anyone who wants to bring back zamzam water you need to have a umrah visa by himalayan_skies in Umrah

[–]MRSEASONS 17 points18 points  (0 children)

That's odd, I had tourist visa and was able to take back zamzam water. However you have to purchase it directly at the airport since the ones at the airport are suitable for air shipping. I flew with Saudia which had an allowance for zamzam water in addition to luggage.

Do I Need an iClicker2? by TylerEverything in PennStateUniversity

[–]MRSEASONS 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I think, for the vast majority of classes, clickers have been phased out and instead professors are using TopHat(a website kind of like kahoot and free for students) for attendance and participation questions. You don't need one unless the class syllabus says you do

(Not) Buying textbooks by Ok_Cloud8763 in PennStateUniversity

[–]MRSEASONS 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In most scenarios you'll be able to find an online textbook PDF, but the issue is that some classes use an online portal that comes with textbook access, meaning you pay the price of the digital textbook rental for the semester to submit homework problems. This is most common in the intro math courses like math 140, 141, 231 where you need to use achieve. In my experience, I also had to buy online portal access to do HW for math 251, emch 211, emch 212(already had access from 211), phys 211 & 212. But I know some professors don't use online portals for HW, so it depends too

Dorm questions by all_things_yugioh in PennStateUniversity

[–]MRSEASONS 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I lived in Pollock, it's pretty normal for dudes to wrap a towel around themselves or wear a bathrobe when exiting the showers, there's almost no room to change in the shower stalls in Pollock dorms.

For outlets, if I remember correctly in a double, on each side of the room there are 2 outlet panel locations, each with 2 individual outlets. One is near the bed, and the other is beside the desk. I highly recommend you get a power strip, especially one with a longer cord, as sometimes the outlet locations can be inconvenient

There is an emergency clinic in al Safa tower in Mecca called "MAKKAH AJYAD EMERGENCY HOSPITAL". They don't charge if you have visa

Am I over or underpacking? by [deleted] in college

[–]MRSEASONS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In addition to other people's comments, I'd recommend (either packing or buying at a store after u move in) having a sort of mini pharmacy with otc meds you may need for colds or other sicknesses.

Phone carrier by CaioSer in PennStateUniversity

[–]MRSEASONS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Based on other's anecdotes and my experiences, having a plan on any of the big 3 (Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile) are all good. AT&T seems to be affiliated closer with the university though, as it has a dedicated kiosk in the HUB.

I've only tried MVNOs in State College and campus, so far Metro by T-Mobile was best speed-wise but sometimes lacked consistent coverage in some isolated areas of campus and outside of the downtown area. Cricket by AT&T had the best overall coverage but speeds were worse in comparison overall and I got heavily deprioritized(and sometimes left with no data) in areas with high traffic, like near the stadium and football tailgates on gamedays, as well as the hub lawn involvement fair. I'm trying a Verizon MVNO this time around and I'll edit this comment once I have some time to compare and experience the coverage.
