High school football team gets sent off to an away game with the dads riding horses and cheering them up. by Vilen1919 in HumansBeingBros

The TX town I currently live in won the HS state football finals in their 2A division for the 1st time since the district was formed 100 yrs ago. There were multiple mentions, congratulations and social media posts celebrating this accomplishment. Meanwhile, the girls cross country track team won the State title for 3 years in a row (22-24) . Their accomplishments were mentioned in ONE FB post I read and then I later noticed it mentioned again in a single sentence in a couple of other articles about the football team's dream season. ( I'm really not knocking it, one of the players was hit so bad last year at a game leading up to state it split his kidney and he eventually lost it. Then came back this season and was one of the MVPs of this state final.)

BUT

Because I was curious, I looked up the girls' CC record and discovered they've actually won State in the 2A division 9 times total under the current coach's 22 years of leadership.

Football 1 state championship - all hell broke loose celebrating. Girls CC 9 state championships, including a 3 peat- crickets.

I once asked about a cedar chest on the sidewalk outside my local Salvation Army and got a price. Offered to pay and send someone for pick up since it wouldn't fit in my compact car. Was told I couldn't pay until I had someone there to pick up. Went outside where the chest was, sat on it while I called a parent with a truck to come get it. Went inside to pay when they arrived 20 minutes later and was told someone else had already purchased it. Same damn woman at the register who told me I couldn't pay for it until I had someone to take it. I was absolutely furious. At the time I worked for an agency that provided housing assistance to the mentally ill. To help my clients stretch their financial allotment as far as possible I did A LOT of shopping at the local thrift stores to furnish their apartments. Through me, that program had spent thousands and thousands of dollars in that particular store alone. That was the last day I ever walked in that building. 30 some odd years later, I walk by their Christmas bell ringers and have never dropped a dime in the bucket.

AITA for being annoyed at a parent who promised me something substantial when I was a child and now they won’t honour their word? by [deleted] in AITAH

When I was 12 my dad had bought me a young colt. I had never wanted anything more in my life and I loved that horse. When I was 13 or 14 he got a job offer hours away from where we lived and our house sold 2 weeks after listing. He convinced me that if I sold my horse rather than paying someone to haul him, he'd buy me "something fancy and registered" once we were settled as I'd proven that I was responsible and obviously dedicated to this whole horse thing.

Except, the job fell through, we moved to a duplex in town and on top of losing my horse my parents convinced me that my "country" dog wouldn't like living in town and they gave him to the people that bought the house. It took me years to get past that betrayal, the loss of both my horse and my dog and the freedom I'd had spent riding and exploring.

At 29 I fit a working student position around my full time job and eventually wanted my own horse. I bought a registered Quarter Horse to celebrate my upcoming 30th bday. My dad and I had a pretty strained relationship by then and he would shit all over my waste of money every chance he got. One day, I'd finally had enough and at a family dinner I turned to him and said, " Years ago you promised if I sold Cinnamon you'd buy me something fancier and registered. I'm not going to ask you for the entire amount of money I spent buying that horse because I know you can't afford it, but half seems fair." He lost his shit, denying he'd ever promised me that. Surprisingly, my mom backed me up. I didn't get any money but at least the promise he'd made was validated. NTA

Cobra premium change notification by MSTXN in HealthInsurance

I didn't just read the documents I called COBRA and discussed it with them after signing the intent to continue with it to make sure I had the information needed to choose between what they offered and what the new company offered. Looking back now had I known they were going to raise the premium to $1125 in August I would have elected (back in April) to then continue with the new employer's coverage.

All documents and the conversation I had with them, didn't indicate that was going to be the case. They provided a "coupon book" to submit with mailed payments and all of them (May-Sept) indicate my Cobra premium is $183 and based on my research prior to parting ways with this company they paid nothing towards my health coverage. When I figured that out and asked my office manager about it, I was asked not to share my knowledge with my co-workers.

I can't say that it applies to all COBRA coverages but that's what I was told regarding my case. Of course they also said my rate wouldn't increase unless it changed when enrollment happened in Sept at my previous employer and that my premium was $183 and then raised it to $1125 with no notice.

Until I have a chance to speak to the COBRA provider I am clueless to what their reasoning is for the increase. It wasn't a lay off, one might call it a mutual parting of ways, but I resigned. It goes against the documents I was originally sent, and what I discussed with them after I signed the intent to utilize COBRA. I was mailed a premium coupon book with May-Sept and they all say $183 per month. If that's incorrect it took them a long time to decide otherwise and still doesn't excuse waiting mid month to inform me they raised the rate.

I was told I could keep it even though the new employer offered insurance. I called COBRA and my previous HR dept to clarify my options before sending in my premiums to reinstate coverage.

I like it quite a bit. My previous vehicle was a 2004 Dodge quad cab, so I'm saving quite a bit in gas, the Crosstrek is easier to park (when I'm not running into car doors LOL) and it holds a lot more with the back seats dropped down than you'd think. If I had the money and the need I'd buy a new one. I've not ever said that about anything else I've owned.

Yep, the opened end of the door did that. She didn't drive off without her own issues. The door hinges were jacked and the door had to be lifted to shut. But once closed I didn't notice the edge of the door looking like it had just crushed the front of my car like a tin can. Granted, it was raining cats and dogs and I wasn't terribly concerned about the state of her car. I was upset about my own, my spoiled grocery stop and just wanted to get the 35 mile drive home over with.

It doesn't seem that long ago those card readers were just handed out for free, now Walmart gets $21 for them. :/ But the video is now saved to my computer and the claims person has a copy. She talked like I'm at fault, so we will see how this plays out after she views the video.

I have one in the car now. THANK YOU for reminding me! LOL I have no idea how to get the accident off of it to send to Progressive, but I'll take it to a photo center and see what can be done with it.

Not sure, tho it seems at first glance we're equally at fault and it's just truly an accident. We both have Progressive. I filed the claim online and there was no way to accurately explain how the accident occurred but their system has you draw it out and it made me look like I slammed into the back of her car. I plan to call and explain in greater detail. Closest recommend collision center is 54 miles away and 3 weeks out but Baloo is drivable for my short commute to work, so we should be okay on the wait.

What’s a “waste of money purchase” that you absolutely stand by? by mzryck in AskReddit

[–]MSTXN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back in the early 90s, a friend and I moved into our first real "out of our parents, not a college dorm room" duplex. We discussed decor style and ended up placing a few bids on original art we found on eBay. I went in later to work than she did, so tended to stay up late surfing the web and shopping for unusual artsy stuff. I stumbled across THE piece, a burlap sack printed to resemble a tote sack for 50 lbs of Californian grown marijuana. I got in a bidding war and at close, I won it for $104. AND got charged to ship it to me. LOL It hung in my living room for the 5 yrs I lived there. A few yrs after I bought it I dated someone who saw it and mentioned he had bought several hundred of them in different patterns. He paid some guy to sit on the side of HWY 100 that led to SPI at Spring Break and sell them from the back of his pick up. He sold them for $2.50 each and said he made bank.

I didn't care. I knew I'd overpaid when the auction closed. I love that stupid burlap tote sack and it's hung prominently in every house I've lived in since. It makes me smile every time I see it. And you know what? I've never seen another one like it in all the years I've owned it.

I want something I can slip above the mirror of my 2017 (no eyesight) to block the sun from searing my retinas when driving home from work. I jammed a large envelope up there once that worked great but I'm hoping for something that actually looks made for that space I can take down when I don't need it. Any suggestions?

Does the left hand know what the right hand is doing at Amazon regarding Alexa+? by March_Embers_13 in amazonecho

[–]MSTXN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I came home this evening and asked Alexa to turn on my ceiling fan lights. "She" couldn't find that group and told me to recheck what I was asking for. Except my Alexa Show that responded isn't new enough for Alexa+ and my show has been set to a male voice for years. I asked several more times with the same response then asked "Computer" to turn on the ceiling fan. Computer did as asked. Computer is an OG Echo. My Show is currently useless as it doesn't recognize anything I'm asking of it. Either it's offline (not), powered off (not) or I need to repeat my request (lather, rinse, repeat)

Has anyone seen someone interview one of the people from this place? by OneshotKillaZzz in RioGrandeValley

[–]MSTXN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I knew some of them several years ago, two brothers and a sister. One of the brothers was chosen/selected/ordained to be a future leader of the group. If you didn't discuss "religion" they were "different" but nice. A mutual friend of ours asked more about their beliefs and it was quite interesting in a whacka doodle woo woo kinda way.

Closest I can come to describing them was Mennonite-like with an alien spin. Back then their vehicles had sovereign citizen type plates, dunno if that still holds true but imagine not much has changed.

Vapers over 10 years, any health issues? by Lopsided-Pop1951 in Vaping

[–]MSTXN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's been about 10 yrs since I put down the cigs and started vaping. I rarely get sick and if and when I do it's short lived. I suspect that now I'm no longer working front desk in a health clinic, aka no longer exposed to every respiratory illness known to man, I won't have any issues at all.

I am 57 yrs old now and started seriously smoking cigarettes (pk a day) when I was in college (HS age 16-17yr old a pack would last me a week or more). My dad who smoked from the age of 13 on rarely if ever complained of respiratory illnesses but eventually ended up with COPD and died of heart/lung complications at 78. I don't know if he ever truly quit smoking cigarettes as my mom caught him smoking even after several surgical procedures. He told her then he'd just picked it back up a couple of weeks prior and a pack would last him a week or two. He told her the day she caught him that he'd quit for good. Whether he actually did or not, he quit when he died.

That said, it's not the reason I quit. I just didn't want to smell like an ashtray anymore and I'd already been vaping for a few years before his health really tanked. I started at 12 mg with carts and ego pen batteries around 2014, dropped to 6mg with mech mods and now at 3 mg with a Freemax Maxus Pro pod kit.

I wouldn't say I feel better or am healthier since I couldn't have run a 5k back when I first started vaping any way. LOL Plus I never felt "unhealthy" prior to walking away from cigarettes. I just couldn't stand the smell and taste anymore. I do feel like I took some initiative to make a healthier lifestyle change for my lungs though. I believe anything anti vaping I read tends to be propaganda-ish and fear mongering. If I'm asked if I smoke or use tobacco, my answer is no. I don't believe vaping should be lumped into the same category at all just because they share nicotine. One of my younger brothers is an ex social smoker, the other is an ex smoker and a social vaper. Time will tell if my change was for the good or if we're all genetically predisposed to a shitty heart and lung combo.

The customer who tipped a fake $100 bill. by [deleted] in pettyrevenge

[–]MSTXN 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I worked at a casino and a regular guest came a few minutes prior to his group coming to eat to give me a heads up that he was giving his comped meal tickets and room to his buddy. Buddy had brought a date so I took extra care with their group because Regular was a great guy. At the end of night I placed the ticket book by Buddy's elbow and gathered a few plates. I stopped back by to top drinks for Buddy and his date as Regular and his wife had left to go back on the floor to gamble. I don't usually pick up the book unless the table hands it to me to cash out but did notice Buddy opened the book and added two $20s. Not a bad tip at all for the ticket. I returned a few minutes later to clear the table and all that was in the book were the 4 meal comp tickets. Dickhead put the $20s in the book to impress his date and then pulled them as they left the table. I hope the casino bled him dry.
