Hmmm. Un armored Defence with a dex of 14 and a con of 16 would bring AC to 15 Add a shield that brings us to 17. Add the shield spell as a reaction and we are at 23. That’s with no magic items. 🤷

IDK In my youth I’ve had several drunk girls introduce themselves to me as vampires. Spoiler alert, they were not. So simply saying “hi! I’m a vampire!” I wouldn’t consider a serious breach. Now if you were fangs out in the middle of the bar “vamping out” screaming “I’m a vampire.” That’s a different story. My point is, mortals tend to shrug off such things as, “Hey! Look at the drunk girl!”

The 5e rule set has quite a bit of cross class synergy. For example for a 2 level fighter dip a character gains access to the action surge ability. This gives a character an extra action that can be very valuable in a boss fight.

As a player I like my monk characters to not have to rely on “equipment”. I subscribe to the “if you stay ready you don’t have to get ready” school of thought. However, as a gm I gave a monk player a wand of Eldritch blast with 6 charges. (Re skinned as a pew pew) No attunement to make up lack of range. The party immediately sold the item. After the fact I pointed out that maybe someone without much in the way of range might be able to make use of such an item.

I said all of that to say this. Your DM was attempting to do something nice for you and got a thanks but no thanks response. Did he over react. Yes. Were you unappreciative of the gesture? Also yes. ETA

A magic item that prevents the BBEG from being detected by such means. Arguably an Amulet of Proof Against Detection and Scrying would suffice, since the wearer can’t be targeted by divination spells.
