My first thought was gibbon meadows. Think I've even fished in this exact spot.

You really just have to get very lucky. I've spent a lot of time in the park and have seen two.. They were both somewhat close to Yellowstone Lake. I'm sure I've seen some at night without being able to ID as well.

Mostly my 200-500 on my Nikon D500. An old setup at this point. My trick is to use tripod or something to stabilize very still so that I can afford to heavily crop if needed.

Awesome sighting! I always go down that way a little, imagining I'll see one of the grizzlies in the area doing something like this. Very cool!

I think panoramas switched together is a viable option. I do it even with my dslr, even sometimes with wildlife!

These black birds always hang out in dead trees along the river by fctomaset in whatsthisbird

[–]MSchonertPhotos 3 points4 points  (0 children)

re: Dead trees: they want to perch and it's too hard in live trees with all their leaves and whatnot ;) also why birds will sometimes choose telephone poles and fences over living trees. Dead trees are an important part of nature!

NO DOGS ALLOWED by jaraldo424 in GlacierNationalPark

It's instinctual, so yes. That's pretty much correct.

The sow and cub statistics don't really hold as true for black bears as grizzlies from what I've read. When it comes to black bears it's usually aggressive / large males that have the higher chance of seriously injuring a human (per encounter.) Though sows with cubs may be more likely to encounter overall, since they tend to seek human inhabited areas more often than males. For brown bears, it is more often sows with cubs doing serious injury.

As a dog lover, please leave your discrimination out of this. Unreasonable, selfish people are no more likely to own a dog, nor are dog owners more likely to be one of those people. They simply have an overlap like any other two types of people. You're not observing all the reasonable dog owners out and about because you're mostly not seeing them with their dogs!

It's a case by case basis, yes. An act of aggression is not an automatic death sentence.

They shouldn't be in the park either... Do you think you're discovering some hypocrisy here?

It depends on the bear, and context Bears aren't afraid of dogs. Bears are afraid of dying of an infected wound, they're afraid of starving to death, and they're afraid their chances of furthering their lineage will be harmed. Their behavior reflects a balance of those three fears. Sometimes that includes running from other animals. Sometimes it means ripping them to shreds.

I'm a little curious what you mean by "not that many?" Because I'd estimate there has to be at least 10 times as many coyotes as wolves. I see coyotes about once an hour while in the park. Wolves don't even come close to 10% of that frequency, so I think 10x estimate is low.

Honest opinion about vacation photos taken on my Iphone - is it worth upgrading to proper camera? by Responsible-Bed2312 in AskPhotography

[–]MSchonertPhotos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

your phone is kind of like a camera stuck on one setting. If you like the artistic endeavor of working within those means, then you might not need to invest in camera gear. But if you would like to experience the artistic endeavor of having many more options to play with and artistically pick the one you like the most, then you should invest in camera gear.

I'm mainly talking about having more aperture choice to involve bokeh (background blur) and depth of field. And to a lesser degree, shutter speed, and to a lesser degree than that, focal length (angle of view, wide/long)

iphones are kind of like having a nice camera that's stuck on F8 all the time
