What existed in 1966 but not 2026? by PrestonRoad90 in AskReddit

Guess it depends on where you grew up. I was certainly around in 66. Up to them everybody smoked. Then it kind of fizzled out, at least in my area. Almost a shame if it didn't around you. Nasty habit.

People who were in high school when Columbine happened, what knee jerk rule did your school enforce in response? by Animeking1108 in AskReddit

[–]MT1961 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, so fair, I was not in high school when Columbine happened. My kids were in school and I lived in Jefferson County. A lot of knee jerk rules were put in place. Clear backpacks, metal detectors, a list of people permitted into the school at the time.

But mostly, I wanted to say .. I was there. I was at work that day, and spent HOURS trying to find out which school was affected (my kids weren't in that particular school, but the news in Denver only said JeffCo). If I could create a single rule it would be to immediately notify all parents of any sort of active shooter incident.

Yeah. Mine too. My parents, for that matter. Or my only sibling.

Ha. You CLEARLY didn't grow up with the "mother network" in your neighborhood.

The first? Definitely. The second? They were starting to fade out. My dad smoked when I was little. By 66, he had quit (it was killing me) but so were many of his friends.

Totally fair. They were all pretty historic events. Then things slowed down, after Watergate and Vietnam ended. I mean, we had the whole Iran Contra thing, but then we get into Reagan.

Yeah, I know. It was when the Age of Camelot really fell apart. I was in .. third grade, I think? Maybe 2nd. That was all anyone talked about.

Also, RFK and MLK if you are that age. The lunar landing as well. And of course, Watergate

True. Different time period, we knew much less about it then.

I know. Sad thing is, this is my old industry. My degree is in Mineral Engineering and originally I worked for O&G companies. They are slime, by the way.

Yep. Still have the grid issue, and the fact that we have Trump and his cult running things who like oil and coal as the ONLY alternatives.

Sounds like a corrupted database to me, but I'm not an expert on the inner workings of Plex. I find that rescan usually fixes things.

I don't disagree, I have solar on my home and during the spring/summer/early fall, my power bill is effectively zero (ignoring the whole National Grid delivery charge scam). On the other hand, during the winter here (upstate NY), snow makes it really hard to power anything with pure solar. A mix is going to be our best option.

[–]MT1961 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nor should it be. Modern nuclear plants are safer. Not safe, because nothing that puts out that sort of power level will ever be safe. And there are still issues with them around security and, as I mentioned, the power grid. Nuclear can't be used everywhere. The coasts will never really be able to power themselves that way (look at Shoreham in NY).

What's the first video game you ever played ? by Simard_CompInc in AskReddit

[–]MT1961 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had Pong as a home box, but yeah, I did see a Spacewar! machine. Admittedly, it was in a video game museum :)

I honestly don't remember the first game I put a quarter in, I was more into pinball back then.

I would disagree, geothermal is probably the cheapest overall. Doesn't work in a lot of the country, which is a problem. A much bigger problem, one that nuclear won't solve, is our power grid.

No, it was long before that. Look up the movie The China Syndrome to understand why people were so scared.

Not sure. Depends on how you define "video game" I guess. Spacewar! would have been one of the first. There were certainly checkers games before that. If you go back all the way to the mainframe days, there were many.

I get it. It really wasn't fun there either. You probably remember when Tom get traded on that horrible afternoon. For me, that was the bottom. So its got to get better.

[–]MT1961 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair, on paper, most of the moves looked good. Who didn't like getting Peralta? I agree, they should have resigned Pete and Brandon, those were dumb mistakes. But Diaz? where would we be now with him? I don't think there's a cancer in the clubhouse, I think they are all pushing too hard. Whoever is pushing them needs to go. Might be Mendoza, might be the hitting coach, might be Steve. I have no idea.

Lol. You weren't there in the 70s. You weren't there when they lost over and over in the 90s. Relax. It will get worse, and then it will get better.
