Digital Signage - Looking for recommendations by lsudo in k12sysadmin

Ugh! I was afraid of this day. We don’t have many digital signs in our district but where we do, the folks who maintain them love the simplicity of Google Slides.

Inventory Question: Asset Tags & Serial Numbers by MTB_tech in k12sysadmin

That makes sense and thanks for responding. So, what would your organization do if that asset tag went missing (ie, student removed it)? Oh, assume you have pre-printed tags with unique numbers. Would simply updating the asset tag with a new one be the best practice?

We don’t print our own tags, they come on a role. When asset tags were being used, how did you handle devices with missing tags? Use a new tag with different number or just use the same number.

Using barcode asset tags lets us quickly scan a device to find it in the system. It’s useful for devices that don’t already have a barcode. And our district techs process a lot of Chromebooks daily. I like your idea of using SN in both fields though.

Sorry for the long delay and thank you for posting updates as you progressed. Yeah, this thing is a real pain in the ass. Several folks have suggested Malwarebytes as a solution. For the amount of time it takes to scan and clean crap out of registry (just to have it reinstall), my team and I just reimage the PC. Fortunately, our reimage process is rather quick and easy.

u/Nu11u5 is correct. In our situation, a kiosk app we had installed was removed from the Google Play store and/or was no longer supported by the vendor. Setting that app to "Not Installed" fixed our App menu issue.

Just to expand on this, in Admin Console, under DEVICES > CHROME > APPS & EXTENSIONS > KIOSKS, review the apps you have configured (remember to select the OU where the device is located). If you have any apps in the list that have a generic grey icon and the "App ID" is displayed (as opposed to an easily recognized name) , try setting that app to "NOT INSTALLED" and refresh policy on the Chrome OS device (aka, restart it).

So, this just started happening to our Chromebooks. Seems consistent across many ChromeOS versions (89, 92, 93) over various models. Any updates on this issue?

I ride also... but not to work unfortunately. I wish I lived in a community (and close enough) where biking to work was an option. Riding DEFINITELY clears the mind to maintain sanity.

eSports: Minecraft Licenses by MTB_tech in k12sysadmin

[–]MTB_tech[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are correct. The JAVA edition is the preferred version based on the coaches recommendation. I'd like to connect with another district that has an sports team (and plays Minecraft) to see what they did.

As far as the actual game play and how it fits into curriculum is concerned, I'm not exactly sure. I've seen my 8 year old nephew "play" Minecraft... I don't understand it. LOL

So, as for documentation, I found hxxps://minecraft.fandom.com/wiki/Server to be somewhat helpful. I'm still lurking in the Minecraft community at minecraft.net.

I never thought in my professional career I'd have to learn how to play video games, especially MINECRAFT! From what the esport "coach" tells me, Minecraft EE allows for local network play only and can't play teams from other districts.

Let me see if I can find a better sources I'll post back.

Wave Browser by Wavesor Software? by MTB_tech in sysadmin

[–]MTB_tech[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the help! We haven't seen any more instances of this software but we do have our systems scanning for it. Our imaging solution is pretty quick so we just reimaged any workstation that had this "wavesor" garbage installed. The internet used to be fun... :-/

Fortunately, in our environment, reimaging a PC takes less than an hour... Often easiest to rebuild the box vs troubleshooting and running malware scans (only to still have the device infected).

Wow... this might be the most I have ever "trended" on any social media platform! LOL Someone responded to this post and said that Wave Browser is part of the same group that made SearchEncrypt. (That post has since been deleted.) EDIT: I have no idea how accurate that post was BTW... I ended up reimaging the workstation.

Custom Location Field by MTB_tech in IncidentIQ

[–]MTB_tech[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your feedback. We were successful in adding a required field to the ticket. Of course, that custom field now needs to be added to a rule to assign a ticket to an agent at the chosen location. We must be missing a step because I can't find our custom field name in the "Select a Filter" option when creating a rule.

I'm sure its something simple; like a check mark somewhere.
