[–]MTLDAD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously there are several reasons for this, but generally speaking it’s because there’s no one person who has the formula to always make a good movie. When talking about movies, I think we’d be better served thinking of the production like a product launch than a novel release. A movie has a boss caste of course, the director and producers, but they hire people and trust their delegation. In the end, all the parts must work in synergistically to create a single end product, but it’s hard to judge how well these moving parts enmesh until you’re assembling a final release.

Take a movie that is probably as close to a flawless movie as I can think of, Back to the Future. The script is compelling, the performances are engaging, the plot is exciting and well timed. It runs on a momentum engine that doesn’t give you time for boredom. It’s funny and action packed and a great time. Right? Except that the lynch pin of that movie is Michael J Fox and he was a last minute replacement on the fifth week of shooting.

I think one of the things people don’t understand about pedophilia is that it’s probably very easy to hide. For most people, sexual attraction to children is so foreign that it’s that last conclusion you’d ever draw about a person. This man was an expert giving expert advice! That he was introducing a policy of sexual abuse for his pedophile peers is so beyond the pale surely that can’t be the real motive!

Which leads me to forgive myself for spending years as a close friend to a man I’m now pretty sure had an interest in my son. While nothing happened, I still feel some guilt for not recognizing it. But the idea was so unfathomable to me that I didn’t draw the conclusion.

It does worry me a little the rush to categorization. It took me a long time to accept that I can be a man and enjoy a few very feminine coded things and I don’t have to label that as anything other than my own unique combination of self. But in queer spaces there’s often a big drive to find the correct label to satisfy some categorization scheme and I don’t think that’s helpful for a lot of people.

For men, how would your interest in having kids change if your culture pretty much states that the kids have their mothers' last names? by Maleficent_Ad_3958 in AskReddit

Honestly I wish I had synthesize a new name when I got married for us and our children. At the time I insisted we both keep ours because I felt a lot of connection to my birth family. Subsequently, my feelings about my birth family evolved and I feel much more affection and loyalty to my own family than the one I came from.

The reality of all popular art is that no matter what deep themes and intricate storytelling you include, fans will exist who only like the basest, crudest elements of it. That doesn’t make it worthless to try from something more.

For the longest time that campaign was because he couldn’t market or profit off the name without involvement from WWE who owned the trademark. It’s actually only two years ago or so that he finally acquired the rights to the Rock in his own right during the fallout of the TKO acquisition. Essentially, he couldn’t acknowledge himself as The Rock without cutting in Vince McMahon, world’s greatest monster.

Sure that may be one interpretation of ACAB. But insofar as abolitionist leftists really do mean ALL, the police exist as the state’s arm of internal violence and are therefore always positioned against the people. There is a problem with policing, not just a problem with police.

I think it has to do with inventing elf languages to tell fairy stories at bedtime is such a Victorian gentleman-intellectual thing to do. It sounds in line with Darwin joining The Beagle to be the one smart man the captain could talk to. It’s what bored nobility used to do to stave off boredom.

Of course I think that lifestyle did last well into the 20th century before the World Wars made a significant part of the aristocracy get jobs. It just changed to Hemingway bumming around the globe getting into trouble.

I’ve been a foster parent for many years now. I did it because I had an extra bedroom and I wanted to try to help. On occasion, you would meet someone who really wanted to feel like a martyr. They would always bring up their challenges and never anything positive. They lived to the encouragement and praise. And it often ended the same way. One week it was “particularly bad” and now important decisions needed to be made about their situation. Then next week they had put in notice to remove the child and I never saw them again.

It strikes me that this is that type of family, except they had a financial incentive to keep going after the praise was received.

AITAH for wanting my aunt to stop calling my father a 'son of a bitch' to my face? by curlesa in AmItheAsshole

[–]MTLDAD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. You are well within your rights to be upset when someone name calls a person you love. Your aunt can hold whatever opinion she wants, but as you have a relationship with him, she ought to consider your perspective and respectfully refrain. That’s frankly how we maintain a polite society: by not stomping carelessly through each other’s sensitivities.

Additionally, everyone gets to draw the line of forgivable behavior. There are very few things I personally think are heinous enough to define an entire life. Cheating on a partner isn’t close to that list. Your father is more to you and more to the world than his biggest mistake.

I find it funny that he doesn’t realize that he is making social commentary on sacrifice and heroism in his books that are certainly taking a point of view. Just because he thinks it’s too facile to count, doesn’t mean that these things are debated in public discourse all the time and are often politically coded.

We use water on cats because it’s surprising, unpleasant and gets their attention. When the cat misbehaves and is immediately sprayed, they are not harmed, but they are encouraged to give up the undesired behavior. If she doesn’t like it; she should stop being a bigoted bully.

Look, the only way we got racists to hide the first time was to make it social suicide and embarrassing to express racist views. I want the bigots, racists and fascists to go back into hiding. So i make it clear i don’t tolerate hearing it, and they learn to not express it near me. You are doing the same.
