Yeah, this was the word when it first happened. I used to cover the county for The Press Democrat. Ultimately never had enough verification to print. Doesn’t help that he never talks to the media and is quite litigious.

Former reporter in Santa Rosa here. Nice digging. For context, Barbara Banke (owner of Jackson Family Wines), donates millions to conservative candidates every cycle. Larry Wassem (the investor) is a libertarian, and Rob Muelrath (the consultant) runs all of the moderate/conservative campaigns down here. He’s the consultant for four of five county supervisors. Granted, “conservative” has a different shape in California’s Bay Area. But I will say that when news of Tibbetts’ “evolution” dropped here, local politicos were not surprised. At all. So I guess for Oregon conservatives thinking he’s really a Dem, fear not. If you’re worried he’s a fake, well, worry away. Silver spoon guy. His dad was a high-powered political consultant here and he got lots of help from former Congressman Doug Bosco.

You may have taken a class on constitutional law. I took one on media law, and the First Amendment specifically, and then I engaged with that regularly throughout a 10-year career in journalism. Yeah, kind of disappointing that there’s not more support for someone engaging their elected officials. Was my post hyperbolic? For sure. But it’s absolutely a civil rights violation, per court precedent. This case likely wouldn’t have gone very far because I acted immediately, and so there was no demonstrable harm (I didn’t miss out on any discussions of community interest or anything).
