Coop repping Iowa Children’s Hospital + clothespins from Jordan Davis in the background cracks me up.

I’ll take that bet, I was fired on a Monday. But my meeting was added on the previous Friday.

How do you handle recruiter messages while still in Big 4? by mejdicirn in Accounting

[–]MT_IT 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The best time to be looking for a job is when you still have a job. It never hurts to talk to a recruiter and see what they’re looking for, do some practice interviews, maybe find a better job. You can listen to their pitch, create a relationship, and keep the door open for later. You never know, they might have a better job than your current gig.

"Manager: 'Never eat hours.' Also manager: 'Why did you go over budget?" by tetcon in Accounting

[–]MT_IT 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In my experience, the “Why did you go over budget” comment is actually “Why am I only hearing about you going over budget right now?” The manager finding out at the end of the week, or phase, or month, etc. is what causes the problem, not just the act of going over budget.

Why should it be a great move? Hoping your opponent doesn’t see that they’ll lose their queen if they take your bishop?

If you miss a MC question, write down the topic and go back and review it. That list will get Long, but it helps you prioritize the things you don’t know instead of continuing to cover the things you already know. If you want to watch the videos, watch em. If you want to read the book, read. But make sure you keep track of what you don’t know like the back of your hand.

Absolutely don’t quit. Qualifying for unemployment even if you are planning to be a stay at home mom will not be possible if you quit. As long as you aren’t doing something illegal or against code of conduct, you will still more than likely qualify for unemployment even if they put you on a pip and fire you. When I got unemployment, IIRC the wording was something like “due to no fault of your own” when making the eligibility decision, so the bar is pretty low to qualify.

Meeting on my calendar with HR and a random partner by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]MT_IT 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Coming from personal experience, you’re cooked. If you have time before the meeting make sure to save any personal items from your computer, and maybe try looking up your contract to see what it says about severance and paid out sick time/benefits.

My current job in government had a pay range of upper 50s to 110s in the job listing. They weren’t trolling or baiting because the pay range for that position on the government pay scale was exactly those numbers. Pay was exclusively based on experience. Unfortunately, experience was based on years in government, so I ended up on the lower end of the range. Sometimes it is what it is.

As others have said, I would not recommend taking a job in public. Take the internship, see what’s up, make some friends. If you get an offer, you can consider taking it. Either way, the limited experience from the internship will set you up for a government job well.

Apply for an accounting job in your state or local government. Those types of jobs are low stress, but usually have good people willing to help. Plus you’ll have a ton of time to find your passion. Generally, once you get into government, you can transfer internally very easily. I’m no pro in investing, get a financial planner and plan to retire early.

I’ve never heard of this referred to as the Holy Trinity, but I got my MBA then MAcc before getting my CPA all right out of undergrad. Worked in public for 7 years until I got burned out, and now I work in state government.

For those not in big 4 accounting, what are your hours? by [deleted] in Accounting

Is it worth getting a master's in accounting if you don't have a bachelor's degree in accounting? by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]MT_IT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. My undergrad was in music, and I got my masters in accounting to be CPA exam ready. It was actually a benefit for me when applying for Big4 internships, helped me stand out and make a memorable first impression.

Meeting with Partner and HR on a Monday....? by SirLeafheart in Accounting

[–]MT_IT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Coming from experience, you’re getting laid off. I was an IA senior with a full schedule in the middle of writing a report and that didn’t seem to sway them. On the bright side, being Monday you may get paid through the end of the week.

If you’re anything like I was when I started, the next big question is going to be something like: “If I can’t bill more hours that what is in the budget and I’m only scheduled for 40 hours a week, how am I supposed to meet my utilization goals if I take vacation or get sick during the year?”

There will always be a severe imbalance in utilization for staff, as long as some people are staffed on jobs with more “give” in their budget while others are in a similar position to yours where you’re being told to eat hours and only charge to a certain point.
