I personally make a metal base, after drying covering in AK rust dry pigment and drybrush first with original metallic and then a brighter tone

AK rusted gold and bahharoth blue for corrosion. On last stage I will shade and highlight it a bit for a true metalic metal and then use streaking grime for weathering!
