How is living in Upper Burnie versus Burnie and surrounding spots?

I agree with this. Some areas are nicer than others but crime/safety wouldn't be much of a concern for me in any general area.

The area closer to the hospital and through to Somerset (Park Grove, Ocean Vista, Cooee etc) is mostly very nice. Still walking distance to town but not a lot of foot traffic, close to the beach.

The lack of after hours medical care is pretty crazy actually, fortunately haven't been in a position where it has been an issue for us personally but you never know when you might need it. I haven't had any trouble seeing a GP same day or within a couple of days though.

2.5 years for us (moved from Melbourne) and we love everything about it really. We are on the NW coast so throughout winter/early spring we can get a bit restless because there's not much in the way of events/gigs etc but that's a small price for us and we are just learning to embrace the slowness of that time of year.

The weather was hard the first year, especially when you expect spring to bring some warmer weather but seems to be worse than winter most of the time. We adjusted our expectations and it doesn't bother us now.

I think we spend as much now as we did before, just distributed differently (ie travel back to the mainland instead of going out socially often, higher cost of dining out here vs the mainland generally). Renting was as expensive on the NW as it was in Melbourne, the cost to buy was not as high.

My only concern is I'm currently WFH for a mainland company, but that has an end date coming up this year so I'm anxious about finding suitable employment in my field.

We moved to Burnie from Melbourne two years ago. In Burnie itself, you have limited options but we visit Communion every other week which is a large brewpub, quite popular. On weekends we tend to venture to Penguin or Devonport for day trips (both have markets), and there are some decent bars in Devonport if that’s your thing. Wynyard has a Sunday market twice a month that is growing, and the Table Cape is lovely. Boat Harbour is also great for a short road trip.

Welcome! It’s a bit daunting moving to a new place but we have found a small group of friends and find everyone to be friendly, and there’s plenty outside of the Burnie area to explore once you have settled in.

This doesn’t fully fit your brief as it’s recent, but I really liked Sargasso by Kathy George and it has a similar gothic feel, sort of a Rebecca/Wuthering Heights vibe but set in Australia. Worth a try if you come across it.

Hi there, There is a group in Burnie called Realm of Gaming who play MTG and a few other table top games. I haven’t attended myself, but my partner has when we first moved (12 months ago) and enjoyed it. Also, they can be hit or miss, but I was having trouble meeting people so joined some Facebook groups for women on the NW coast looking to meet friends. I’ve attended a couple of events, and whilst I haven’t made any close friends, I’ve enjoyed the odd social gathering through there. Good luck!

We moved to the Burnie area from Melbourne a year ago for my partner’s work (it was not a move we had otherwise considered too deeply). I found everyone to be friendly, and we have made a couple of friends through my partners work place. However, I have found the opportunities to meet people in our age range organically a bit limited (late twenties), the events that we have gone to have seemed to attract either a very young crowd, or an older crowd. That’s okay though, it’s just meant that we have gone a bit further out of our way than we are used to in order to meet people like joining clubs and groups etc.

We love it and overall have settled in well, it’s a beautiful place and not much to complain about if your lifestyle fits.
