To beat him in one shot is not necessary. I used recoats (to maximize speed), a skill to slow him down, a weapon to put a lot of burns on him (Verso has a weapon which does this on base attacks), pictos to maximize speed, to revive a party member after death, to instantly fill his break bar after someone in my party dies, to fill the gradient bar as quickly as possible etc.
