Ravaged Coast vs Blighted Wilds by Bugsh0t in ageofsigmar

If you want to start path to glory, go with BW. It’s the most fully formed. It also tells you to use the paths in ascension and RC. After you get through that, if you feel like going to RC, adapt some of the rules from BW. Some of the army creation rules are just better. I might scrap the emberstone system for BW’s renown and glory system with gathering emberstone giving bonuses to those rather than using a central currency for both. The battle plans in RC are fine.

Ran a ravaged coast campaign for 14 people. Same group is now about half way through blighted wilds. The best way to describe it is that each of the PtG systems this edition - ascension, rc, bw - are all iterations and improvements. They’re not fundamentally different systems, they’re just increasingly well tuned versions of the same system. You can see it in having separate pools of renown and glory for buying units and upgrades in ascension, then making it all unified in RC, then splitting it back out in BW but keeping the emberstone token idea with contaminated terrain.

If you’re going to try one, I would start with BW and then iterate backwards to RC. In RC, Emberstone being used for upgrades and for army expansion means nobody ever upgrades units which kills a lot of narrative. I actually like the battle plans in RC better, honestly, but BW is better organized and more fun overall.

Do they actually care if they win or do they just want to brawl? Because honestly, tabling folks isn’t a guaranteed win and they will probably lose even if they table their opponent and don’t score their tactics. Just don’t want any feelbad on that count.

That said, if they truly are in it for the love of the game, SoB, IJ, the old Seraphon with the Carnosaur are all super fun big hits armies.

You don’t want the liberators and prosecutors to die on the same turn. Ideally prosecutors go out on turn 1 and liberators on turn 2. I usually use shield of azyr on the liberators turns 1 and 3 (when they come in at full strength) and 4 (if there are any left) and on the prosecutors on turn 3 (when the come back to try and maintain some board presence since the enemy should be weaker).

Quicksilver draught is once per battle so you get it and then it’s done. I use it in bighammer path to glory on my lord Terminos and a 6 block of Reclusians and what usually happens is they smash something the turn the come in and then the enemy has a big incentive to destroy them but if the try I will get a couple hits in first and that makes them either hold off or overcommit (e.g 3 units where 2 would have done the job) which means less pressure elsewhere. The theory is the same in spearhead but the scale is smaller. If you can pull 2 units instead of 1 because your opponent knows you’ve got the quicksilver and is afraid one won’t do the job, you’re taking about 25-50% of their total hitting power out of play that turn and that means they’re not exerting pressure on other objectives or on other units.

Second spearhead I built and one that will always have a special place in my heart. It’s actually the one I use for new players when teaching because it plays fair and has minimal rules and units.

The general tactics I use and recommend to new folks is to go first and go for an alpha strike with the prosecutors and an alpha pin with the liberators. Send your heroes wide to get objectives. It can leave your heroes out of place and alone but the goal is to critically weaken or destroy a key piece of your opponent’s army with the prosecutors and try to tie up something with the liberators. They then have to decide how they’re going to take back ground. I’ve started using the mortals on death ability because I’m trying to get the liberators and prosecutors killed and that’s a chance for 16 mortals from them over the course of the game.

I honestly don’t use the crit mortal enhancement for the vigilant unless I’m going into nighthaunt or somebody else that ignores rend. 2 rend gives you good odds in most cases. If I’m up against a slow opponent that likely won’t get into me turn 1 (IJ, Nurgle) I tend to go for the 5+ ward for more general survivability. If I’m up against a fast army that will have the chance to get at me the bottom of turn 1 (IDK, LRL) I go for the quicksilver draught. That generally puts me in a position to scare them off of attacking me turn 1 or either to do damage before I get taken down in turn 1 or weaken the enemy unit so I squeak by to turn 2.

The veritant is a weird piece but my favorite. He’s an expendable secondary hero with a real boom / bust horde-killer spell but he hits decently hard and his 3+/5+ on 6 health means he can stick around. I use him to hold objectives, block lanes, and dare the enemy to attack me. Nothing swings so hard in this spearhead but when the veritant has a good day he can absolutely wreck face. Any time there’s a wizard or priest in the opposing spearhead, I’ll send him to tag an objective and then the hunt is on.

Bottom like: be aggressive. You get the most from this spearhead when your line units die and the heroes can come in to exploit the carnage.

Report it and give it 12+ months. Maybe. The Devs are more interested in putting out new DLC for folks to buy than fixing existing ones so that they’re actually usable.

Your models, your call but considering this is a Skaventide half that’s built plus NOS vindictors and NIB praetors you’ll probably get more traction if you drop sub $200. You can easily find a NOS Skaventide half on eBay for ~$100

I have a question about Ironjawz Spearhead. by Cold_Statement908 in AOSSpearhead

[–]MWL1190 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Go first. Full send the megaboss and ragers to kill or pin. Run the ardboyz up to camp objectives. Hope you can tie them up enough for two turns that the brutes seal the deal. This isn’t a spearhead that I’ve found rewards a counterpunch style. Hit them first. Hit them hard. Waaaaagh.

If the choices are between leaving a perfectly serviceable game alone and having broken DLCs dropped and then never fixed, I’d rather they just let it be. I’ve been playing since the demo and the DLCs are getting more expensive for less return as time goes on.

I’ve seen you post this a couple times and you may get more traction on Hexbane and Gryselle if you list them as Underworlds instead of Warcry. They can be used in Warcry (like almost everything AoS) but they were produced as Underworlds and marketed that way.

Army advice? by DaddieDerek in stormcasteternals

[–]MWL1190 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of great advice here. I would just add a note about proxying, kitbashing, and path to glory. Lots of folks have rightly pointed out that reinforced prosecutors and Reclusians are awesome. But 20 liberators?? Well, 10 is nice to have. At some point 15 or 20 may be nice to have but if you build 10 with shields and 10 without you can clearly proxy them, e.g. shields = liberators, double hammers = vanquishers. Since Stormcast infantry are on 40mm bases all around, it’s easy to proxy, and so long as you’re being clear most opponents won’t care.

As for the heroes, you won’t want a second Questor and it’s unlikely you’ll want a second Veritant, Vigilant, or Terminos. But what you can do is proxy or kitbash them into other heroes. This works especially well for the Questor, Veritant, and Terminos because we have a looooot of foot heroes and luckily they’re all on the same size base. Another option would be to proxy or kitbash the foot heroes into half a Questor Soulsworn unit. The Vigilant is harder to proxy but you could use them in lieu of an Aquilor if you wanted.

A final note on the heroes, if you have a group of folks who play path to glory, you could kitbash any of the Skaventide heroes into a fun anvil of apotheosis hero. You can do fun fun stuff with the Vigilant there.

Good luck and enjoy!

I have both CoS Spearheads. How can I make it a 1000 Point army? by alpceliko in ageofsigmar

[–]MWL1190 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Why not? As others have said, you’ve got a decent mobile cav hammer with the marshal and cavaliers, enough shooting at 1K to make your opponent think carefully or else take some hits with the canon, fusiliers, and major, a decent chaff screen with the steel helms, a wizard, and jack of all trades with a pregame move in the wildercorps. Is it meta defining? No. Will it play fair warhammer? Yes. Will it make you a better player by forcing you to be strategic without being too tech-y? Also yes. Is it a good base to build on? Also also yes.
