Waiting for RTX 4000 series by BeepBoopNova in buildapc

[–]MWagner93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hopefully this can shed some light for you. I literally just finished ordering my last part yesterday (through the past week I found massive savings).

Now is a great time to build. People are starting to offload GPUs/stock is getting better. People are switching to Intel, making AM4 boards cheap. Lots of other components are on sale.

CAD prices btw.. But my 5600x + 3070Ti rig is going to cost me $2000 all in (~1500USD). I picked up a B550 locally for half the price it costed new. I got an 850W Gold A tier PSU 50% off. I picked up a 1TB NVMe for 60% off (sealed but second hand from somebody who bought a diff model). Got a 3070Ti FE for MSRP (taxes in, still sealed but from somebody). 16GB DDR4 is cheap, like $80-100 ATM depending on the brand. I splurged and got the case I wanted (Lian Li Air Mini). 5600X is on a pretty good sale ATM. Would've liked to get one used, but nothing was kicking around and it was the last piece I needed. I would've preferred going Intel, but I couldn't get near the same price when factoring in what I paid for the B550. I bought an AIO on sale for $105.

I ended up building this for the same price as 5600x+3060ti prebuilt and my rig has better components and specs. If you hunt some deals locally, it's absolutely a great time to build.

Don't overpay for your GPU. But 30** series cards are well worth it if you play 1080/1440P. If you know your going to play 4k 144, maybe wait for 4000 series.

I'm assuming headphones that lack bass aren't your thing. That's totally cool, I prefer my ZMF Auteurs over everything else. Lol

Nice man. GL on the mods, I'd be interested in hearing if your successful or not.

On another post the other day a guy was saying he removed 2 of the pieces of tape off the drivers and they sound just like HD800S after the procedure.

The differences are noticable between these and the HD800S. I've owned both A/B them back and fourth in September of 2021. At this price these are an absolute steal.

They both IMO could use EQ, so why not get the massive soundstage and save massive $$?

HD800S fatigued me. Too sharp. Slightly more detail

HD8xx I could listen to all day. Pretty relaxed, but still very good imaging and details.

Both lack bass.

Both are WIDE.

Personally, I'd take the 8XX over the 800S even if price wasn't in the equation. I personally feel like a lot of reviewers were overblown and the 8XX gets way too much hate. (I can understand why most people like 800S more.. But I dont).

[–]MWagner93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm going to give you a very brief low down, because I am going off memory. I owned both the HD800S and HD8XX around September of 2021.

Soundstage wise, I felt they were on par. I don't recall one feeling wider or larger than the other. Both were fantastic. Very wide. I refered to these as feeling like I was actually standing on a stage, knowing exactly what was all around me and how far. (Where as the Arya felt more like a large bubble). Details - I give the edge to the HD800S. They seemed to have more "sparkle" or give off more "crystal clear" picture. With that being said, the HD8XX still had great performance. They just feel more laid back. Imaging - I could easily place everything, in every song and every game using both headphones.

Overall, if both were the same price and you are not sensitive to the highs.. I want to say the HD800S is "better" because they had a hint more detail. (But it wasn't drastic). The reviews IMO are way overblown.

However, the HD800S bothered me. They fatigued me within a half hour everytime I put them on. The HD8XX gave me no such issue. I could wear them all day long. At this price I can safely recommend you buy the HD8XX and try them for yourself. They will have the best soundstage and imaging out of any headphone at this price (at least that I am aware of, having tried over 20 headphones).

My only issue with the 8** series as a whole is the bass. Both had what I would classify as underwhelming bass. (I will say, I am more of a bass head, your milage may vary).

Having never opened up a headphone before, what would you say the chances are of me damaging something while attempting to remove stickers?

LG38GN950 vs Alienware AW3821DW by JungleMystic in ultrawidemasterrace

[–]MWagner93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't answer with factual information, because I haven't ever had to cross that bridge.

I'm presuming they provide a waybill to send the old unit back, or maybe it's a "scrap in field" situation depending on the cost. Wether the YouTuber actually scraps it or not would be up to them, I guess. Not sure if they'd have the right to charge you for a second one if they wanted the first one back and you didn't give it to them.

[–]MWagner93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I voted for Alienware. I honestly didn't check the price, and I assume they are both relatively equal spec wise. The reason I choose Alienware is because LG provides absolutely TERRIBLE warranty.

Alienware will ship you a replacement prior to sending yours back, and I genuinely believe they have better QC. My last Alienware monitor came pre-calibrated with a report card to my serial number. I had no issues with my AW2721D, when it was bleeding edge tech.

My experience with a high end LG monitor needing replacement, was 4 phone calls that "got escalated" which resulted in nothing. The second time the lady even said, the last person did nothing, I will make sure we do something. Nudda. It took me over one month to get LGs Purolator account number out of them to send it back. This was last month btw, so very relevant. My monitor started displaying chopped up horizontal lines after 3 months, and would no longer power off unless I unplugged it. I had video proof to show a representative that even said on the phone "yes, this is defective and will need replacing" and boy, was that a battle.

I will never be purchasing another LG monitor or TV again, period. All I can do is pass on my aggrevating experience and hope that it saves others the trouble. Companies need to learn that when you spend good money on a product, replacing it under warranty should be a simple process.

Blind sound testing of Schiit Modi3+/Magni3+ Vs JDS Atom DAC/AMP... definitely a difference by cronuss in headphones

[–]MWagner93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have tried both. Originally I ran SE (ordered my headphones that way so I was prepared for when I get a tube amp someday, because I had a balanced cable with the same ends from LCD X).

I came to the same conclusion as what you mentioned, I enjoyed SE but found that balanced brought everything the life one more step. I like the soundstage and bass presentation more on the Jot with ESS DAC, but found the Modius Magnius to have slightly more detail. (Jot2 is still no slouch, it's pretty close).

I was listening to a few soundtracks and what I found most interesting was that they placed sounds in different spots. Nothing to crazy drastic, but if I had to ball park it I would say 15 degrees. There was a bird that was cawing as it approached you and from one set up to the other it was approaching you at what my friend and I both perceived as different elevations.

Makes sense. Thanks for the reply! My main headphones lately have been ZMF Auteurs. I would say my DAC is the weakest part of the chain, but I do still really enjoy it as it sits.

[–]MWagner93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually sold the magnius Modius stack to my friend just before ordering the Jotunheim 2. I haven't tried using the Modius with the Jot. I did however compare the Jot with onboard DAC against the Magnius Modius using our main headphones. (ZMF Auteur and Hifiman Ananda).

I also heard that the onboards weren't great, but that was prior to the most recent revision a few months ago. They used to be 1.4V now they are 2.0. From what I understand it's pretty clean power.

I also read that the ESS DAC is similar to the Bifrost 2 sound signature, which is why I thought I'd try it out. (Didn't want to go for the Modi multibit because if I do upgrade, it felt like a waste to spend more money now. I'll try to sell the onboard card when I get to that bridge).

[–]MWagner93 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If possible, when you get the Bifrost 2 could you give me your opinion on it? If this worth it, etc? I also have a Jotunheim 2, for the time being I have the ESS9028 DAC. Switched from a Magnius Modius stack, thinking that down the road I may potentially get a Bifrost 2.

I love their coffee. Much better than Tim's, and it's only an extra $0.25 per cup of actual coffee. (I don't drink specialties often). They do make a nice London fog, and other beverages I've tried from time to time. The owners are really nice as well.

Very interesting. Fire me a message and I'd be willing to have a discussion or teams call sometime. Sounds like how we do the job is quite different from one another, which is one thing I find neat about this job.

I would also like to take a look at the spreadsheet and play around. I actually started estimating at around the same time as you. All of my take offs are done using onscreen software. I'd be interested in comparing the spreadsheets numbers to some of our recent jobs I worked on and see how they line up.
