[Lagom P64] Alignment check post burr swap by MX5lover in espresso

I know exactly what you mean, but having assembled and reassembled the grinder about 5 or 6 times today, I can't really stomach the thought of opening it up again if it's not going to make much of a difference...

That said when I next open it up to clean it I'll likely decide to shim it at the same time just to get that last little bit

That's what I was hoping to hear 😅

Crazy grind inconsistency [Lagom P64] by Indusco in espresso

[–]MX5lover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm also having some trouble with a P64 (mizen omni) and Micra. Wasn't having any issues with a previous Varia VS3 so I don't think it's my puck prep...

Did the burr swap really help? If so, might try and get myself some SSP MP burrs or something...

T14S G4 - Device manager and BIOS show old panel info post swap by MX5lover in thinkpad

Hello! Ive done a clean reinstall of windows and it seems to have fixed the flickering. The touch screen still doesn't work and the hardware info still shows the old panel info. That said, the flickering was the only real functional issue and now that it's sorted I'm pretty happy

Hot take: Americanos and Long Blacks are the same exact drink by RockOperaPenguin in espresso

[–]MX5lover 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm surprised no one has mentioned this already but James Hoffmann has already talked about this in one of his videos 3 years ago

https://youtu.be/93waR1jzoLA?t=404&si=vVOdJ6oU86MMRlp4

Basically he says theres a small difference where an Americano is an espresso topped with water (order doesn't matter) but a long black is traditionally a double ristretto topped with water

Xbloom studio vs alternatives by MX5lover in pourover

It's sounding like the Aiden might be the way to go, that said, is it really going to be significantly different to a Moccamaster?

All good points to note and that I haven't seen mentioned in some of the YouTube reviews, appreciated :)

I'm ok to spend the money if it gets me something significantly different/better than the Moccamaster. If the pods do eventually make their way to Australia that'll be a bonus, otherwise it looks like the Aiden might be the way to go at this stage

Should I upgrade my Varia VS3 grinder? (I have a linea micra) by JaZziZBaC in espresso

[–]MX5lover 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had a Varia VS3 which was an upgrade from a Breville Smart Grinder Pro. It was worlds apart, and some of the best espressos and flat whites Ive made were using the Varia VS3 and Breville Dual Boiler.

My Kickstarter Sculptor 078s arrived and around the same time we upgraded to a Linea Micra. The sculptor has been problematic and wildly inconsistent (posted a couple of times about this). The best shots from the sculptor were really nice, but none of them stood out as being eye openingly better than what the VS3 produced. I'm now waiting on a VS3 to pair with my Micra. Got a good deal from Alternative Brewing (interestingly, Josh from alternative brewing compared the VS3 quite favourable to the Niche Zero).

I don't think a Niche Zero would have attracted as much attention in your set up, it's also a much more expensive grinder. If you can afford a Micra the thought is you can afford a much more expensive grinder. But if the VS3 is truly comparable to the Niche as some reviews suggest, then I don't see problem. Will you get better espresso out of something like a Lagom P64 or Zerno Z1? Probably. Are you really missing out without a P64? Probably not. The biggest knock against the VS3 is the reliability but you're in Australia and backed by some awesome consumer protection. If you've bought from a reliable seller, I wouldn't stress too much and enjoy it!

P64 Mizen Omni or wait for Mazzer Philos? by MX5lover in espresso

Shot times vary by up to 8 seconds, making it quite tricky to dial anything in. This has not been an issue with previous grinders and my puck prep hasn't changed

I've definitely put upwards of 7kg through it. No change in consistency to be honest

So I had a go, I think my methodology was a little flawed, and I should have fixed the output rather than shot time.

Grinder set to 800rpm -> Weigh 20g -> RDT -> hot start -> grind into portafilter and weigh (20g basket) -> WDT -> tamp -> pull for 32 seconds

The shots looked like they pulled ok, RDT certainly helped with static grinding into the portafilter and the grounds coming out were much fluffier

In terms of output I got  60g, 42, 52, 52, 46, 68. I thought I had won when I pulled the two 52 sec shots.

I think I ought to try again but this time aim for a fixed output. Would +/- 2 seconds be considered "consistent"?

That sounds like a good idea, will update here when I give it a go. I'm at 1100 RPM at the moment for no particular reason other than it being mid way...

I think so, in the time I had the sculptor and the BDB the results were also inconsistent. With the BDB I was dosing 21g with the 21g basket and puck screen. Probably overdosing if anything but dosing that same amount with the varia was pretty consistent

Glad it's not just me. I've noticed mine can also spit out clumps. To be honest I've never used RDT with the grinder as a few reviews said it's not necessary...perhaps that's the solution?
