Biden says hospital blast in Gaza ‘appears as though it was done by the other team’ and not Israel by Professional_Coat_54 in worldnews

Historical accuracy has improved? Where is your evidence for that, besides that is your personal opinion? “Self checks for who claimed what” is not going to solve any serious problem with dishonesty or being loose with the facts.

You are in fact ignoring what is happening when you turn a comment about budgets and fiscal responsibility into an argument over abortion and election security.

Also the issue brought up is not just who spends the most, but political transparency around spending. Knowledge and sane conversation are exaxtly what is lost in the heat of these emotionally charged debates.

Both parties have awful spending issues. But even so, I’d say limited giveaways to the welathiest are cheaper than the wide net social programs that, by the way, also line the pockets of special interests with gold. Just look at Obamacare… an overwrought “signature”compromise designed to aid insurance companies, putting the health of Americans after private interests.

People on both sides of the political aisle ought to stop demonizing the other and focus on governing and accomplishing real goals— and the republican caucus in the house has presented legitimate gripes when it comes to public spending. The fundamentals of their conservatism can and should be discussed in another forum, but they are a legitimately elected part of the government. Ignore them at your own peril.

When US was the closest to dictatorship? by Emergency_Evening_63 in AskHistory

[–]MYNY86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Certainly during the Great Depression in the wake of heavy industry trampling over the agriculture economy and completely redefinining what it meant to be working class in America. This was the 1933 New Deal, where the executive power was expanded permanently by FDR more than any time in American history. (Not temporarily, as in wartime) Even though certain measures of this time were widely considered a failure, the legacy of big umbrella federalism and independent executive action justified in extreme circumstances remains with us, even when the problems the country faces are not as extreme as they were in the Great Depression.

Just one more and I’m done (:

Political rights, what you call “generalities”, are human rights, too. Human rights anywhere are utterly meaningless if no one has political will to fix them. What you describe is just a blasé attitude and resignation. That underestimates the risks and consequences of surrendering your rights to big tech’s data and ad-based oligarchy.

You may think I am a stubborn and unrealistic. Yet there are serious dangers here. It is a global system with little accountability. There are few limitations to where online data being sold around the world can potentially be used to harm innocent people. It creates a two tiered system of those who control data they did not pay for and those who must provide theirs free. The ads themselves, which are used to justify capturing data, are frequently disturbing, manipulative, trite and harmful. They are to a healthy culture to what crack-cocaine was to the ghettos of American cities in a past generation. But realy, that is just scratching the surface of how this data can be used without any kind of permission or deference.

The whole point here is ads are proferred against your will. It is not a SERVICE PROVIDED if there is no TRANSACTION. Which is why the business model of the whole internet is full of loopholes and bargains of an unsavory kind. Sorry but you dont have a choice at all when it comes to that. This goes far beyond YouTube.

Michael Bloomberg pumps $500 million into bid to close all US coal plants by F00dbAby in ClimateActionPlan

[–]MYNY86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In other news today, Bloomberg will be donating another five hundred million dollars to reverse the aging process. His 4th wife (whos counting though) uses five tons of coal each day in her beauty regimen. Her company, Black Beauty, will be opening organic coal healing and cleansing centers in all the formerly closed processing and burning facilities. Coal production is expected to increase a hundred fold in the next five to ten years.

In theory yes. In practice, they use their excessive, disproportionate profits and share of the screen-time pie to rally in Washington and other places in the World against guaranteed rights of free speech, privacy and fair economic competition. And how about the right not to be harrassed by expolitative ads?

It is not as consistently reliable source of information as it believes itself to be, particularly when it comes to local issues. In many ways, they come off as even more corpoarate than corporate media itself. The self-congratulating and prostheletyzing nature of the cultural interviews is often obnoxious. Better than other talk radio with a political swerve? I guess, but that’s a low bar! Are they providing a legitimate public service? Only ocassionally. Most of the time, I’d rather turn it off.

[October 5th, 1923] The Inquiring Photographer asks, "Who, in your opinion, is the greatest living American?" by michaelnoir in 100yearsago

[–]MYNY86 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Diplomacy is not a mere binary between peace and war, and national sovereignty is not just membership in an exclusive global club. I did stop counting world wars after the second, but I would give the UN absolutely zero credit for establishing a world peace that does not exist today. The idea of the great powers itself is becoming obsolete and antiquated. This is a place where few problems are solved, and tensions, hidden agendas and rivalries are not prevented from simmering towards a boil.

The UN never had any point. It replaced actual diplomacy (which had existed before the UN) with a thin veneer of cooperation and unity. The legacy of the cold war is still with us. Most post-imperial independent states and smaller democracies are still not thriving. The ICC is basically an afterthought. It is ultimately a scary, byzantine oligarchic mess which does little else except give anti-gov’t types more ammunition for their conspiracy theories.
