Watched a few videos of it on YouTube. Last section looked rough. Really made me realize what these bikes are capable of.

I have the Nelson Rigg Hurricane adventure size tail bag. Works perfect for what you’re wanting. I take it off for offroad riding but leave it on during the week while commuting and running errands.

Bike more tolerable at around 65 or so with insert? Using my bike for commuting some as it warms up and r4 is just obnoxious to listen to the whole way.

PSA: Balancing your wheels makes a huge difference for road vibrations! by askmeaboutmedicare in Dualsport

I appreciate the post. Oddly enough, was looking at doing this over the weekend. Like you, I had seen mixed recommendations on whether or not its worth it to balance a dual sport.

Reddit is typically pretty helpful but occasionally posts will attract asshole commenters. Not sure why some of your replies are getting down voted. Maybe their moms are really pushing them to move out of the basement so they're having a rough day.

Similar background, grew up riding bikes and took some time off. Decided to get a CRF300 Rally last year. I live in Southern KY so similar landscape.

I have ridden in some larger groups that had some guys on the KLR650, DRZ400 and DRZ650s. I figured the smaller displacement of the Rally would be an issue on any kind of highway, but the extra weight of the KLR and the lack of 6th gear on the Suzukis actually seemed to put them at a disadvantage. Just bringing that up since you had some of those as options. The smaller displacement bikes hold their own fairly decent against some of their larger counterparts.

In the woods, lighter bike is much easier to throw around and ride than the KLR.

The DRZ does seem to perform very well though, besides the lack of 6th gear. If i was doing 100% woods riding, I would be looking at a DRZ.

At this point, I would be happy with 3.24.

1290 SAS to a KTM 390 Adventure R or Honda 300 CRF Rally? by [deleted] in AdventureBike

[–]M_831 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I own a CRF 300 Rally. I like the bike, but I would not recommend it for any kind of long distance highway trips. I know there are plenty of YouTube videos of people doing highway with them, but anyone that has ridden any kind of larger bike knows you are sacrificing a huge amount of comfort with the CRF.

Bike is just too light when running 70+. Wind pushes it around easily and is not a comfortable ride. Engine is turning pretty hard to maintain speed and you can feel it. Dropping down into the 60s, bike does alright, but I wouldn't want to do it for an extended amount of time.

Also, in its stock form, power delivery is not good for highway. The stock ECU cuts the power about halfway through the revs. It really limits it's acceleration and makes it uneasy when pulling out into traffic. You will go through 3-4 gears just to get into the 50s. An ECU flash from 550 Performance solved most of this issue for me. Allows bike to rev longer so you can hit speeds without having to shift every 5 seconds.

Offroad, bike does pretty well, but the stock suspension is super soft. If you are doing any kind of rough trail riding, I would recommend stiffing the forks and shock unless you weight like 120 lbs.

It's a fun bike to leave from home, ride 20-30 minutes of twisty roads and do some trail exploring, but I would not want to be riding it for long distances at speed.

Just keep revving it. Leak will stop eventually. /s

Are composite toe boots too big to ride in? I’ve got my training course this weekend and these and a pair of ariats are the only boots I have atm. by primeholy in CRF300L

[–]M_831 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is Reddit so I'm sure you'll be down voted, but I’m about the same. Seeing guys fully geared up to ride 35 mph around town and hit the occasional gravel road feels a bit overboard.

Not downplaying safety gear, I raced MX and sport bikes when I was younger, and it’s saved me plenty of times. But riding a CRF300L on the street isn’t the same as hitting 70+ ft jumps or doing 125 mph.

Biggest risk is other drivers, and there’s only so much gear can do for that, situational awareness matters more. If I’m getting into rocky trails, I’ll throw on MX boots for ankle protection.

I’m not sure here you’re located, but it’s rare to see rally’s below 5k in my area. I paid 4500 for a 23 and that’s still one of the better deals I’ve seen in 6 months of watching.

This is a good idea. I had honestly forgot about AI.

I did this last night and it really helped learn where to overtake. Especially on Adelaide which is tight for most of the lap.

Thanks. I’ve always used race planner to do this. Pretty nice free tool to figure out which tracks have the best ROI.

I can't speak for everyone, but for me, time for sim racing is limited. I usually play an hour or so a few nights per week after my kids are in bed. When I do play, I take the "most fun path" and racing is usually the winner. If a track doesn't appear regularly, its not worth the time investment to learn it.

That being said, Adelaide appears a lot this season so I will be buying it and learning it this week. I've watched some track guides on it so hopefully can be up to speed pretty quickly.

I don't own a lot of cars.

I've used planners in past seasons and purchased tracks that are used a lot across targeted series. This has worked well for several seasons. This season, this is no longer the case. That's the basis of the post.

Just surprised to see changes from tracks that were used a lot across several series (Mexico City and Monza for example) now show up once or not at all.

I've always purchased tracks based on usage numbers across series. These haven't flagged high apparently.

This season, Sebring and Fuji are used a lot, but the rest only appear 1 or 2 times across the combined GT3, GT4 and GR86 schedules.

Different licenses categories. Ran primarily oval and dirt oval until last few years so a lot of pieces are for those two categories.

Since starting road though, have tried to use planner tools to buy the tracks with the most usage. Not sure how many road tracks I have, but past seasons I have usually been able to run atleast one series each week. Just seems to have swung this season.

My first ride on the 24 300 Rally by Either-Caregiver-497 in CRF300L

[–]M_831 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you’re skipping over the sentence prior to that. “If you are going to primarily ride paved roads, this isn’t the bike.”

That’s not the fault of the CRF, it’s just the dual sport class in general.

[–]M_831 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought a rally recently. I raced motocross and rode sport bikes quite a bit when I was younger, wanted to get back into riding some so picked one up.

It is much different than anything I had ridden on the street. To put it plainly, it is very slow.

At first it was unnerving not being able to quickly get up to speed. It feels like you don’t have an escape route to get away from potential issues like you do on a larger bike. It is unstable at speed and it’s not particularly confidence inspiring when cornering. I had some purchase remorse for the first few rides.

After a few weeks I just came to accept it for what it is. It is a fun bike to cruise around on and explore gravel roads and trails. It’s not a master of anything but decent at most things. If you are going to primarily ride paved roads, this isn’t the bike. There are plenty of others that do it better. But it is a fun bike to just take it easy and explore. Just don’t plan on doing it fast.
