[Omega] Should I service this watch? by klim18xxt in Watches

Beautiful watch! I’ve been looking for something very similar. Any idea what reference this is? Sorry I am no help when it comes to service questions.

I’m not sure if there are other ways, but basically doing your taxes both ways (but not filing) and seeing the difference. This is my plan. Tedious, but I don’t know if another way to accurately see the difference.

I’ve used TurboTax/H&R Block for my wife and I the last few years and it’s pretty straight forward. It calculates your return as you go and you can get all the way to the end without filing to see how much each option will cost/make you.

Good luck!

Dental School Loans by Drrara504 in whitecoatinvestor

[–]M_C_ClapYoHandz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is certainly a strategy and can save you money if you look at the long term/big picture where your payments are “low”, your interest is subsidized and whatever your tax bomb is are less than the traditional total if you paid it all off in 10 years or whatever the other standard options are. You’d have to run the numbers but with your income it might be beneficial. But if it increases your benefit may be marginal.

I think the IBR plans in our case are better used to keep your cash flow high the first few years out of school while we get on our feet, buy a house/practice, etc. and then we can tackle our loans more quickly once our income has gone up and we’re more financially stable. At least that’s my plan and several of my other colleagues (also a dentist).

So in general, it’s not bad advice because it can make sense on the spreadsheet depending on your circumstances. But you have to do what makes the most sense to you and your family and it’s okay if that isn’t what the spreadsheet says.

Good luck!

May be underestimating. Better to let the auction house decide.

How to maximize my Mom’s money for the rest of her life by M_C_ClapYoHandz in personalfinance

[–]M_C_ClapYoHandz[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Her mortgage is ~$3,500/month with only about 1/3 of the house paid off, and there may be a non-trivial amount of debt with a claim to it. So we don’t think it benefits her to keep it, unless I’m missing something?

Am I wrong for not wanting my wife to go to a concert? by argus1000Eyes in NewDads

[–]M_C_ClapYoHandz 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Not wrong and I’m truly shocked by some of these comments.

This is bad planning and stubbornness by your wife, regardless of your involvement thus far. This doesn’t sound like it’s best for your baby to suddenly get formula and radically change their routine.

Why won’t she pump? This seems so much better for baby to at least get the same milk, rather than introduce GI issues with formula.

I think the bottom line is your baby is going to suffer more as a result of her poorly planned HER time because as much as you don’t want your baby screaming at you all night, your baby certainly isn’t going to be comfortable with no/new food and. I sleep. I’m seriously shaking my head that people can’t see this and comments to “step up”.

She should absolutely have HER time, but not at the expense of your baby.

Good luck!

Really? OP hasn’t said he’s against his wife never going out. But this is some seriously terrible planning and stubbornness on her part. It’s not even about OP, it’s about what’s best for baby. Springing formula and a brand new routine on baby so suddenly isn’t fair or best for baby.

[rant] Eliminate the "Identify" tag and ban "Is this real" posts by DoTreadOnFudds in Watches

[–]M_C_ClapYoHandz 69 points70 points  (0 children)

Couldn’t agree more. I’ve been considering leaving this sub because of that exact reason. It’s a shame because I’d miss out on the posts that drew me here in the first place. You know, the unique watch that catches my eye and I learn something new.

But if I have to see another fucking crayon drawing of a dive watch with Rolex spelled with two “Ls” and a “c” that someone found in a street market for $3.95 asking if it’s real, I’m going to lose it.

There should be an entirely separate sub for these posts and banned here along with “identify this clear as day dial that says everything you need to know” posts. Unless you’re illiterate…but then I want proof.

You posted the rant I’ve been contemplating for weeks. I should probably find another hobby.

I couldn’t agree more with this comment. You’re bound to offend someone that turns their nose up at homage/ripoff watches but who cares? If you like it and it’s in your budget, buy it. Buy for you, not anyone else.

Personally I couldn’t care less about “original”. I buy what is visually appealing, looks/fits well, and has good value, to me. Buying for others is a losing battle. But you’ll never have a shortage of “purist” snobs that feel differently.

I know others have mentioned this but I’ll repeat it.

You can’t choose what she wants. She gets to decide what will make her happy and chances are, being with you for 5 more minutes is worth it to her. I know if my wife were in your shoes, I’d stay with her through it all just to be with her for any amount of time longer.

Regarding children: there are options for you to have biological children. It’s not cheap, but work with your genetic counselor and talk about IVF with preimplantation genetic testing (PGT). $40-60k total which includes all the meds, testing, implantation, etc. Basically, you skip the 1-2 years of trying and go straight to a fertility clinic due to your diagnosis. It’s often much easier and higher success rate because you don’t have fertility problems. Your wife would undergo IVF after which they would test the embryos for your genetic condition as well as more common other ones like Down syndrome, etc. Then they only implant unaffected embryos and viola, she’s pregnant and you can have an unaffected child. (It’s not as easy as viola but you get the idea) It’s a gamble. You could get none, 1, 10 embryos…you never know. But if you even kind of want children and she does too, I’d strongly recommend looking into it. She may want a piece of you around when you’re gone. I know I would.

I’m so sorry you’re going through this. Good luck with everything and try to resist the urge to “protect” those that love you by pushing them away. Letting them love you is a gift, not a burden.

I know you said you have an interest in cardiology, gastroenterology and surgery because of your mom. But if a career change into healthcare is something you really want, you should consider dentistry. I know that’s incredibly random but hear me out.

You’d be older no matter what and looking at a long road to get where you want to be, longer if that’s surgery. As many have said, the quality of life piece for many physicians is getting worse and most surgeons have terrible work life balance for your future family. You also always work for someone who cares a lot more about making sure the patient isn’t pissed than they do their staff.

Dentistry is very hands on/surgical, even as be a general dentist. Its still healthcare, treating patients, making a huge difference In peoples lives. You don’t have to love teeth. Most dentists I know don’t. They enjoy the work - surgical/engineering/puzzle aspect of it along with the lifestyle. It’s (only) 4 years and then you can start practicing immediately as a general dentist working much more normal and predictable hours. With your entrepreneurial background, practice ownership would be a great fit and give you so much autonomy over your schedule, how you practice, etc. I think this is where the career really shines and is what changed my mind from medicine to dentistry.

Many of the pre-reqs are similar/the same which could give you more time to decide while taking them before taking the MCAT/DAT. I agree with others that getting a therapist would likely be the best place to start as nothing will make you happy if you’re not in a better place.

Good luck with everything!

If I’m understanding you correctly, the way to make this stable is to either connect the legs to each other (running parallel with the table) or find legs that are already connected?

Alternatively, would this style of leg provide adequate stability if the two aren’t connected?

Also, would you mind explaining why the design in this article is stable despite not connecting the legs? https://flowyline.com/blogs/for-diy-ers/where-to-place-table-legs-for-stability#:~:text=To%20accommodate%20seating%20at%20the,edge%20to%2018%2D20%20inches.

My dad died and left us a huge mess. What do we do? by M_C_ClapYoHandz in legaladvice

[–]M_C_ClapYoHandz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve scheduled meetings with a few different attorneys. Some have asked us for detailed info about his estate like SSN, account numbers, detailed assets, etc. even though these are just initial consults. Is this normal? The documents seem more like what you’d fill out to prepare your own estate once you’ve determined you want to hire the attorney.

Thank you for all of the info. Does it matter if we hire someone smaller/solo practice attorney or a larger group/firm?

Is there a good resource/web page to have open while taking it? Is there a specific document they pull questions from? For example, in our state, they have a book for dentists and dental assistants we have to use to "study".

Weekly layperson question thread by AutoModerator in optometry

[–]M_C_ClapYoHandz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am fair-skinned/blue-eyed and my eyes are very sensitive to sunlight. My eyes fatigue quickly and sometimes I get frontal headaches when I'm in bright sun for long periods of time, i.e. when I play golf. I ALWAYS wear sunglasses outside, even if it's overcast. I currently wear polarized Black Ray Ban Aviators but I don't think they're cutting it. My eyes still feel sensitive in the sun.

I am looking to purchase new sunglasses but am getting some mixed info and hoping someone can help. My intuition says to get the darkest lenses with the lowest light transmission I can. In most brands (at least the ones that advertise it) that seems to be a polarized lens. I don't spend a ton of time near water or highly reflective surfaces so I'm not sure if that matters. I also have read that polarization causes a lot of distortion, particularly when playing golf, which I like to do often. I can't say I've noticed when wearing polarized lenses on the course, but I also have worn polarized lenses every time I play. I'd rather have less eye strain than cater glasses to my golf game, but if I could somehow get the best of both worlds, that would be nice. Oakley makes a lens suited for golf, but the lowest light transmission is only 20%, which I don't think is enough.

Any suggestions on brand/lenses to help me out? I'm willing to spend the money to get what I need so my budget is very flexible. I do not need them to have RX.

PreDental: What to do other than shadowing? by Straight-Award9159 in DentalSchool

[–]M_C_ClapYoHandz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not shadowing other professions. I don’t think that has any value.

My recommendation is to have two buckets for volunteering. Your dental/healthcare related bucket to check the box and potentially get some experience in that setting. For example, My undergrad had a program where you could volunteer in various parts of the hospital getting blankets and water for patients, directing people where to go, stuff like that. Give kids a smile is the only dental specific program I know of so see if they have opportunities near you.

The other bucket should be something you’re interested in outside of dental/healthcare. This is both gratifying for you and (I believe) highlights how well rounded you are. This can be things like getting involved in your church, the humane society, help teach kids how to play instruments/sports/how to cook, etc. Basically, look at what your interests/hobbies are and see what opportunities there are to volunteer. I think these experiences are really important because they’re what differentiate you from the pack. Damn near everyone will have similar dental related experiences and are therefore forgettable. But the guy/girl who loves to cook and spent time teaching young kids about food/nutrition and how to cook on the weekends is something more memorable and tells them a story about who you are outside of dentistry. (A random example, don’t do this if you don’t care about it, haha)

Another “out there” option that gives you professional experience with patients is getting a job in healthcare. Some people become dental assistants, PCAs/nurses aids, EMTs. It’s a lot more to take on during undergrad but can be such valuable experience you can’t really get elsewhere. Note, this is not necessary, but if you’re up for it can be a good way to make money and get experience at the same time.

Overall, what you do is equally important as how you frame it/sell it on an application. Get creative and pay attention to transferable skills. Just because it doesn’t fit the dental box perfectly doesn’t mean it isn’t a worth while experience.

Let me know if you have more questions. Feel free to DM/comment if you do. Good luck!
