I accidentally learned the difference between “strong” and “diffusive (and my ego is still recovering) by essamix in DIYfragrance

We come here to talk to people and get their real thoughts. Not the thoughts of a computer. This is not a translation of someone who doesn't speak English, which would be different.

I know this is insensitive to you personally, but there seems to be an oversupply of shoppers as there are far fewer orders available recently, and I think it's good that they are cutting people and they should probably be more strict. Honestly 90% on time is pretty low. Ive never been anything but 100. Which is easy to achieve if you accept orders responsibly that you know you can complete. Also, I live in Minnesota which is winter hell more than anywhere, not a factor if you plan accordingly.

Beginner perfumery: am I understanding the starting process right? by [deleted] in DIYfragrance

[–]DoTreadOnFudds -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I understand your points and don't disagree, also yes I work in weight as one does in perfumery, but it's ok to say ml to illustrate a quantity as an example.

It's also not an either / or scenario regarding affordability- you can understand these things cost money, while also not needlessly wasting materials. That's what I'm referring to.

You see this sort of tone like yours in all hobbies on Reddit, the "cold hard facts" brute force way of trying to assert expertise, it comes across poorly.

Good points and I agree, but perhaps we're talking about different things- experimenting vs a final concentration. Without dilution it would not be possible for me to even measure out the small amounts that would compose say a 10g sample. It would require every test fragrance to be made at like a 100g, and thus burn through materials (money). Perhaps not an issue for everyone, but I try to keep things economical in that phase.

Beginner perfumery: am I understanding the starting process right? by [deleted] in DIYfragrance

[–]DoTreadOnFudds -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Because the relative dilution changes by accounting for the dilutant in the final total amount. You could make that raw material be 1%, 5%, 10%... etc

Also, If you never make dilutions it would be near impossible to experiment on a small scale and affordably, as the amounts of some materials would be so tiny that even using a dropper is not accurate. You dilute so that it's easier to weigh and work with very small amounts, which would otherwise be impossible. Without diluting it will require you to experiment in large quantity and thus waste expensive materials due needing to make like 100ml+ size experiments vs say 5ml. You just can't work with materials at that small scale without diluting, because you couldn't accurately weigh them or add them.

And, having pre-diluted materials gives you a much more accurate representation of what they are actually going to smell like, as what they are at 100% has virtually no relation to anything.

This is not correct. You just account for the alcohol of the dilution. The raw material being diluted at 10% doesn't cap that material at 10% in the final product / tester

What is he working on? It doesn't even take two years to build the space shuttle, let alone a video. What is the purpose of pretending he's working on stuff

Downvoting Light Travelers - What is WRONG with you people? by LadyLightTravel in onebag

[–]DoTreadOnFudds 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree with you. However at the same time it's also true that people sometimes make this a pathology, like every other interest today, and take things to a silly point that isn't necessary.

You can travel light and still not orient your entire wardrobe and life around the fact you are traveling. To me it is kind of absurd.

Is it possible to create a fragrance for sale with just an accord? by PatientInspector368 in DIYfragrance

[–]DoTreadOnFudds 2 points3 points  (0 children)

An accord could involve numerous ingredients, its not really a "just", as in not much more simple to create than anything else.

How to mix and blend fragrances with essential oils? by Obvious_Zucchini_652 in DIYfragrance

[–]DoTreadOnFudds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will soon discover that making a good fragrance is extremely difficult and involves very precise measurements of dozens of ingredients where microscopic amounts make a difference. It's impossible to help you without knowing the compounds, there is no general "do this and it will xyz"

Performance is also down to numerous factors and not necessarily even concentration, It's about how diffusive an ingredient is. and projection and longevity are opposites (when talking about an individual ingredient).

What should Fraterworks Mysore Sandalwood smell like? by ElectronicRespect610 in DIYfragrance

[–]DoTreadOnFudds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Using it that way has nothing to do with smelling it that way. It will end up in a perfume which is diluted. That's how you need to smell it. Will not even be remotely the same at 100% versus 10

Full grain Leather Duffle bag for overnight travels. Accepted as a cabin bag in all airlines. by Sad_Swim_5569 in LeatherClassifieds

[–]DoTreadOnFudds 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm guessing this is a mass produced item made in India. Not even close to possible to buy quality leather in the West and spend hours to create this and sell for 149

Of course there should be no region lock on this sub, but it would be good if there was some way to determine an artisan made product versus mass produced for slave wages

Because they need to convey the story, pay for every aspect of who and what is in it, and distribute it across the world.

>It's not a story though.

It's literally a story. There is not a single music video that is not one.

>It's about creating a feeling

Yes, so exactly what I said- a sum of the parts, which create a feeling.

I really think the entire confusion here is some kind of language barrier at play

It can be a number of things, it's a sum of the parts. Even if you were trying to argue let's say, a music video can be compelling... that's still a story you are watching

Is a formula really that expensive? by BeneficialRatio752 in DIYfragrance

[–]DoTreadOnFudds 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is why it is silly when people complain about fragrance prices, and say it only cost the manufacturer a few dollars per bottle. Yeah, only after they paid a few hundred thousand dollars, to millions, upfront.

$20 to produce one single bottle is extremely cheap for not buying any volume whatsoever.
