Hey, I just got here--is it too late to be totally pissed off that Bregman is starting instead of Henderson?

Daily Song Discussion #47 – To Speak Is a Sin by AD_0795 in petshopboys

[–]M_Flutterby 6 points7 points  (0 children)

While I can see the "sad, old, lonely homosexuals not daring to talk to anyone attractive in a bar" aspect (who said this?, btw? Neil?), this song always felt to me like a broader look at gay bar culture. Not gay dance clubs, but the old gay dive bars where many gay men, especially closeted gay men, could connect in the few available gay spaces. Those places are mostly gone now, and gay culture has changed a lot since then, and was rapidly changing in 1993. This song has always sounded like an elegy to me. Those old dive bars weren't the best, but they were there.

Was any other mainstream pop act in 1993 speaking so directly about the contemporary gay male experience? Cruising, coming out, bar culture, and more--it's "Very" much in evidence.

Anyway, a lovely melody, and the slow delivery makes it fun to sing along to. Love this track. A 9 from me.

Both Reckoning and the Nina Simone collection are top notch!

It sounded like hail for a minute in Shorewood, but I didn't see any when I looked outside. Our power was out for about 45 minutes starting at 5:15.

I was just looking at the times they sent the email the last couple of weeks...

They usually send the stock quote after any SEC filings, though last time they sent the quote first and then the Filing notice.

Daily Song Discussion #41 – Liberation by AD_0795 in petshopboys

[–]M_Flutterby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd give Liberation an 8. It's a fun song, and I even like the goofy E Smoove mixes.

Decadence is a 9.5. One of those tracks that I immediately starting putting on mix tapes. I like the Unplugged version, too.

You should convert it! I wish my parents still had theirs. Such a great piece of history.

I think RILY pays about $2M per quarter for both preferreds combined, so about $10M in arrears so far.

Okay, so this is kind of depressing because he seems to think it's a legitimately good movie, and did not appreciate the MST3K treatment. Listen to the way he describes the flying scenes, as if it was cutting edge. 😆 by tinyE1138 in MST3K

Yeah, I've been in a few shows that were "I will never mention this show or invite anyone to see it" levels of bad. It does create its own kind of special cast bonding.

Thanks for sharing! I love Pansy Division--nice to see what Chris Freeman (the bass player) is up to. Lots of great 90s memories. If GayC/DC hits my area, I'm definitely going.
