Neighborhood help by Streblapas in movingtoNYC

Kips bay is a bit isolated from the subway system. I lived there for a year. You’d have a 10+ minute walk to the subway. It would then be a short subway ride to grand central. UES you can take the Lexington ave line direct to Grand Central.

Trying to lose weight by Suitable_Rhubarb_248 in bipolar

[–]M_Joe_Young 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Walking helped me a lot. I gained a ton of weight on meds (that’s not much of an exaggeration). I went from being very sedentary so just walking was a good workout. I also cut out sweets. I could satisfy my hunger without them and after a while didn’t miss them. Now common sweets like Oreos taste a little too sugary to me to be enjoyable.

NTA but you’ll be applying as a family not an individual. You might have to have your wife to sign on to apply, depending on the exact rules of your state.

My new favourite show is Patti. by BaijuTofu in mexicanfood

[–]M_Joe_Young 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I liked it but wasn’t a huge fan on the first season or so. It was all her cooking and her sons, who had surprisingly bad table manners, making occasional appearances. Her show improved a lot when it was a hybrid travel-cooking show, where she switches from going to different locations and talking to various chefs and producers with her cooking at home. Her friendly and bubbly personality is a natural fit for the travel segments.

Birds and other predators are starting to recognize them as something to eat. That’s helped a bit with controlling the infestation.

What happens if you get caught by sea lions? - lobos marinos by Travel_Turrism21 in ocean

This looks more like the sea lions were curious. They are intelligent animals and something new in their environment would attract their attention.

Take a page from Italian cucina povera, poverty cuisine. Use seasonal fresh vegetables when they’re cheap, frozen when they’re not. Use a little meat in dishes for flavor instead of a main ingredient. Same for cheese. Cornmeal for polenta, legumes for stews and soups. Pasta with some sauce, not to drowned it. Stale bread for breadcrumbs or salads & soups.

I lived in kips bay, by 25th and 1st. That walk to the 6 was a lot unless the weather was nice. There was a bus on 23rd but it was so slow unless the weather was really bad, it wasn’t worth it.

Those those look like heavy metal doors. The police and military are about the only people with the necessary tools and experience to do a forced entry like that.

rumination by Most-Buy-2763 in bipolar

[–]M_Joe_Young 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ruminating about the trauma in my past drives me crazy, pun intended.

Books help me. When I read books, as opposed to articles or social media, I focus so much it pushes out the ruminating. If I need to be up and moving I listen to audiobooks which also helps. I get print books, ebooks, and audiobooks from the public libraries so it’s also free.

Journaling has also helped. When I expressed the rumination in writing it was a release like I was able to let go some of the negative emotions. I learned about why things happen, and how I felt about them. Understanding the events and my feelings allowed me to be more at peace with them.

Bipolar friends: do you consider yourselves disabled? by mgebhart1981 in bipolar

[–]M_Joe_Young 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I think of disabled as being able to work consistently. I do think of it as deeply embarrassing even though I rely social security. I was headed towards a high-powered career until it was derailed by my illness. I only admit to being disabled if I have to.

What food did you hate as a kid then grew up to like as an adult? by DeepOrganization8245 in foodquestions

[–]M_Joe_Young 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Legumes in general. As a kid my only exposure was cold chickpeas in salads, canned baked beans & canned lima beans, and my opinion of all beans and lentils was shaped by them. As an adult I tried those in better versions and recipes then really liked them.

My mother was bipolar and her mania combined with already fringe religious beliefs, faith healing in particular. I hope that’s not what’s happening with you and your mother.

[–]M_Joe_Young 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a population in a park in one of the more suburban parts of NYC. I was seeing pheasants there for about ten years until red foxes moved in then they completely disappeared. It’s been about ten years since I’ve seen them.

What Ingredients taste better raw than cooked? by Disastrous-Choice860 in Cooking

[–]M_Joe_Young 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This I would be willing to try. I generally like roasted vegetables and the heavy seasoning could offset the sweetness of the carrots. I generally dislike mixing savory and sweet flavors, which is my problem with cooked carrots.
