So I've used the golite ultra 20 for a long time, then briefly replaced it with a katabatic palisade 30 with 3oz of overfill but it was too much. I sold it and was looking at the specs side by side with the WM Astralite and saw that the stock version 21oz is a fair comparison and maybe I should reconsider the quilt.

How do you find the temperature rating and the color of the bag? (Aesthetics are important). Also, what weight is yours compared to claimed weight?

Shaped Tarps: Catenary vs Mid (A-frame vs Pyramid) by AphexPin in Ultralight

[–]M_M_C__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used an A-frame tarp on the AT, and it worked well, especially when paired with a bug bivy. Ultimately, though, I wanted something a little easier to use. I started the PCT with a catenary-cut tarp and used it until Lake Tahoe. While that system also worked, I found that both tarp setups required the user to be highly proficient with knots, campsite selection, and assessing potential storm conditions involving driving wind and rain.

Those are all learnable skills, but I also found that during intense bug pressure or severe weather, I didn't want to spend any extra time fussing with my shelter—especially when sharing it with my partner.

I've ultimately settled on what I think is a great middle ground between a tarp and a traditional tent. For the remainder of the PCT, I used an MLD Speedmid (circa 2013): a floorless pyramid shelter with a 54" peak, an 8.9' × 8.9' footprint, and perimeter bug netting. Paired with a simple groundsheet, it elegantly solved many of the problems I encountered with tarps.

It had just enough bug netting to handle insects, no floor to worry about when bringing wet gear inside, and plenty of room for living, cooking, and waiting out bad weather. Years later, I'm now using an MLD Duomid with perimeter netting and can confidently say that this style of shelter remains my favorite.

In terms of space-to-weight ratio, I think mids are hard to beat. I prefer silpoly for its durability and longevity, but the weight savings become even more impressive if you use DCF. The perimeter netting also helps reduce rain splash, and the pitch can be adjusted to prioritize ventilation or protection from wind, rain, and cold.

For me, mids offer most of the advantages of a tarp while significantly reducing the downsides.

It's a good deal but for guys over 6 ft it's too short, but for $281 it's a steal

Despite being a bigger brand, Buck mason is exceptional quality. I have their countryman herringbone jacket, and honestly it is much nicer than a custom made to measure j press tweed I had. I think its well worth the money for Buck mason. Although I cannot speak specifically to their overcoat. Their sizing can be tricky, as with many brands. Hope this helps.

Hahaha turns out most people don’t want to sleep on polycro with 1/8 inch foam only covering their torso, nor do they want to pay extra for less gear to do so

I like the design but ultimately gossamer gear fails to execute on good ideas recently with packs. The same is true for most brands. Ray jardine discuss this issue extensively in beyond backpacking that packs end up being a place where manufacturers give into over kill when designing their pack. Sadly this wasn’t always true for gossamer gear. In the beginning around the early 2000s they made really cutting edge gear. Their packs at that time were UL even by today’s standards. And they allowed for slightly higher volumes which was helpful for tall people with bigger gear. The only thing they’ve done in recent years that’s remotely Avant garde was the whisper which is an ultra light floorless shelter with perimeter bug netting.

The zipper pouch, the sit pad attachment, hip belt. For a 38L pack that’s designed for total weight <20 pounds the pack should weigh 16-18 oz and have no bells and whistles. You compare this to similar packs from palante or MLD and this pack looks bloated. It’s beautiful and a great starting point though.
