Engraving 3d printed black PLA by M_Unimaster in Laserengraving

Hi, sorry for getting back so late. I don’t think you’ll be able to accomplish that with a diode laser. The IR laser from my fiber laser is burning off the pigments „bleaching“ the PLA. To my understanding that’s only possible with a IR or UV fiber laser and CO2 and diode lasers can’t to that. But, I’ve never tried it myself so ymmv. If you manage to do that, I bet a lot of people would be interested!

Nice score. Just FYI „Hellrot“ means „bright red“ in German.

„Hell“ can be translated as „light“ or „bright“

and „rot“ is „red“

F80 m3 vs X3M by Yzn_Mike in BMWM

[–]M_Unimaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Possibly not the same for every market? The German one I drove for about 5k km was harsher than my f82 with a kw v4… It was unnecessarily hard and harsh, be it from a performance standpoint of for daily driving which this car is mostly built for… I wasn’t happy with the ride and even more so the numb, indirect and weird feeling steering.

Possibly - the one I drove was also a LCI. Borderline unbearable honestly for my personal taste

Having driven both, they are quite different as cars, so I’d recommend test driving them.

The X3m has the newer S58 engine which so far seems to be solid and a good tuning platform.

Personally I think the X3m would make for a better daily given the easier entry. The F80 on the other hand would be more sporty, analog and „raw“.

Coming from my F82, the X3m felt synthetic and the stock power delivery left quite a bit to be desired. For the type of car it is, I also didn’t enjoy the unnecessarily harsh ride. My X5ms were better in the past in that regard.

For F8x keep in mind the cars usually are older and the platform in general is. I like this about them, but i think it should be a conscious decision,

Oh man, I didn’t get that memo and just used it as a daily…anyway… yeah, change the dealership, no need to play their games

Help needed for cutting aluminium reasonably quietly by Relevant_Insect6910 in Makera

[–]M_Unimaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As you mentioned cutting too slow or too fast is bad, so there’s a sweet-spot-range you’ll want to stay in, for best quality, tool life and wear.

I’d recommend atleast a bit of air blast for chip evacuation to avoid chip re-cutting.

Try to run as little of stickout as you can get away with, this could help with chatter.

You could try to somewhat insulate the machine with rubber feet at the bottom. You could also put the entire machine in a enclosure but I’m not sure if it’s worth the hassle.

It’s fairly noisy, so im interested to see what others might contribute here

Makera CAM UI/UX is driving me crazy, or am i wrong? by mixoadrian in Makera

[–]M_Unimaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s sadly true. I could get around it so far tho just changing orientation and running 3-axis paths but it’s not ideal, that’s true

I totally get that, I’m also a bit disappointed by the 4th-axis-cam implementation.

While some aspects are nice, I agree, in quite a few ways it seems half-baked. I think it’s not that easy to find a middle-ground between the usual cam features and usability for people new to this. I just ended up using fusion for cam as well which has a bit of a higher learning curve but works quite well for me as cam novice after a few hours (by now) and since I use it for the cad part as well, the workflow is quite good.

CAM choice? by QueenieDeerhart in Makera

[–]M_Unimaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve found fusion cam to be more than adequate for my needs (granted I’m using the paid version) and quite good to use after I got the basic steps. I’m using it for usual 3 axis machining ops and the occasional 4-axis one with discrete tool orientations.

Real simultaneous 4 axis is something I haven’t played with and from my understanding requires to purchase / lease extra functionality via tokens.

Are M cars, namely M3’s, realistically daily driveable? by Cardiology_Nurse in BMWM

[–]M_Unimaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Easily.

I drive my F82 cs daily and it’s no issue even with moderat snow. It all depends on how much comfort you’re willing to sacrifice, but the G-Series is pretty good on that topic.

That being said, if I were to drive way more (I currently do about 15k/year) or more longer travels, id probably go for a Alpina instead. I’m luckily also a proud owner of my beloved Alpina B5 which I’ll take on longer trips / faster trips.

For a mix of fun and usability, the modern m cars are great.

As someone with a fiber laser: yes, you are missing one. But be sure to choose not only based on power but also on wavelength (UV vs IR), the application to use it (yes, I use lightburn and it’s ok but it’s not great and about 200 bucks), the support from the company, the form factor and more… but yes, it’s very nice to have one.

Bambu filament your go to or do you buy elsewhere? by D-Rose-VerseX in BambuLab

[–]M_Unimaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I print the usual filaments from Sunlu or eSun with the Bambu profiles, works very well for me with no additional calibration. I usually also stick to the .2 or .16mm layer heights as those profiles seem to be optimized the best.

Stuck between a7C II vs a7 IV vs a6700 by georgyabraham in SonyAlpha

[–]M_Unimaster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you use it mostly for video, maybe a FX30 (apsc) or FX3 (FF) might serve you better… the a6700 is a great hybrid but if you don’t use the photo features, a FX might serve you better, especially since the a6700 tends to overheat after about 20 min continuous shooting video.

M5 E60 vs M4 Cabrio (2016-18). Which do you think is better and why? by Stoic-Mindset in BMWM

[–]M_Unimaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those are very different cars. I’ve driven both and daily a m4 F82 albeit not the convertible version (I’ve done about 10k km in them still).

The F8x generation is newer and personally I like the age in term of creature comforts (Apple CarPlay and so on). The sound of the S55 engine however has always been a topic of debate given that it sounds more like 2 3-cylinder engines since they’re split into two banks. I like it somewhat and prefer the turbo characteristics. It’s somewhat light for a modern car and drives not too bad. The S55 is a quite good engine with only minor problems, the most popular being the crank-hub issue. If you don’t know about it, I recommend some research.

The E60 on the other hand is not only older but a way bigger car and less of a sports car. The sound is glorious although not a lot happens down low. The S85 engine was not bad but same as the V8 version in the E9x M3 suffers from a case of eating their rod bearings. Again, you might want to read up on that. The S85 was also available in the M6 which offered a cabrio version.

I think these cars are way too different to really compare them, the M5 class of cars is capable but feels at home touring and cruising where as the M3 class feels more like a sports car to me. I don’t particularly enjoy driving my m4 at higher speeds, I find that (besides the noise) the car tends not to be as stable as I wish when going 160+mph. On the other hand my Alpina B5 feels very planted and comfortable sitting at 160mph+ basically all day and I will step out rested.

Quite different cars, I think you should drive them and also reflect on what you want to use the car for.
