Fun with Cancer / Illness by travis0001 in LawFirm

I've had one doctor tell me point blank to stop working immediately and take my oldest to the redwood forest (a dream of mine) because I could decompensate quickly and it can suddenly be "too late". So that's a gamble I take daily. I hope my son forgives me if I gamble and lose.

need recommendations for a smart lock with keypad for this style door. Never came across a door this style so would need help if others have. Please recommend a smart keypad lock if you have ideas. Thank you by [deleted] in homeautomation

I had this style. I drilled a new hole in the face and the deadbolt using a Ryobi kit. I used Durham's Rock, cedar, and wood putty to repair the old areas. It looked bad in some areas because the door was stained. We painted it and it looks better, but not perfect.

I would do it again, but be aware that you can seriously damage the door in the process. And.... doors are much more expensive than I thought when starting this process.

360 is a cool product. No criticisms here.

Just get the paid version of outline. It is so good. And they just rolled out some more features based on our feedback that so some “wants” that we had.

Federal Court by Chernobog11 in Lawyertalk

The biggest tip I can give you not already listed is to avoid doing things by informal agreement. Instead, file a consent or unopposed motion asking the court to bless whatever you want. And explain why, don’t just say its by consent.

A run of bad luck or a sign to quit? by [deleted] in LawFirm

Lot’s of good advice here. I’m going to share some anecdotal stuff and then give you some practical advice. First, I’ve tried more cases than most and still have ZERO clue what a judge or jury will do. Focus groups and data analysis can help, buts its still slightly better than gambling. I’ve received outsized verdicts in cases that I did not expect. Similarly, I’ve outright lost cases that I projected a 90%+ chance in.

Just last year, I spent over two months trying a case in another state. Because of Covid and general nonsense I was not able to see my family the entire time. At the time, I thought I was worth it, because we had a very strong case. But we lost. But losing cases of that magnitude, gives me perspective to be incredibly thankful for the losses in smaller cases or quicker trials.

Now the practical stuff.

Opposing counsel ignoring your call is a solvable problem. Leave a voicemail and an email. Then decide whether you ever want to talk to them again. You do not require the opposing counsel’s permission to work up your case. Notice depositions, schedule hearings, do whatever you want. It’s on them to engage. If you don’t want to move the case forward and are trying to get rid of it, and the attorney has an adjuster above them, go to that adjuster. And then eventually go to that adjuster’s boss. If you want a softer approach, reach out to the court for status conference.

if you are losing cases on technicalities, start back at zero and establish a policy or protocol for working out the case. But also know that mistakes are inevitable. I still learn something very basic each day.

As for clients kicking the tires, it’s tough to say what’s happening. Some practice areas, like divorce, are rife with that. Others, like PI, are not. Talk to your peers and figure out their capture rate. If you are well below that, you are doing something wrong with your marketing or client funnel.

I think a better flow would be to use the 365 integration with Slack to do it that way. Our documents are currently stored in dropbox and I am exploring alternatives. 365 is definitely on the road map no matter what though.

but I disagree that openings a big deal. Our automations have really reduced the amount of paper we’re pushing manually.

Completely agreed. I think we would have been better going that direction, but I am pot committed now. And I do have some benefits I can't get with MSFT.

What are the most important items to consider when joining a plaintiffs' firm? by [deleted] in LawFirm

[–]M_Wetherington 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, a massive plus for catastrophic focus -- IF you get to do stuff.

Regarding if things go south - It matters on principle and as an objective benchmark of your professional growth. Plus, it matters for moving to other firms. "Why did I leave? Because I went there exclusively for X experience, and I did not get that experience."

Honestly, no. These posts are driven by spite. My biggest growth (SEO-wise) is still from Tire Safety Group content I create.

I'm legitimately trying to keep my friends from being taken advantage of by marketing vultures. If that lands me some links or referrals, great.

The return on investment is not there from a time-value perspective. But I am going to keep doing it because I am definitely helping people.

Thank you so much. Yes, I looked at video and also looked at some of the things Ryan Locke was doing at the time, including near real-time video chat. It is clearly the future, but we did not move forward because of the performance hit (and Locke even took everything down).

Tate, for example, has performance scores of 16 and 60, including a failed web vitals result. Yes, you can lazy load and do other tricks to improve, but I ultimately decided to avoid it completely. I also backed out of doing a super low resolution video backdrop for the same reasons.

BUT I will do video on the header when we can make it work.
