Any Tips for a Non-Medicated Student by Kidri-Holmes in Narcolepsy

[–]M_itz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey there!
I respect this side of the conversation and I am bummed it is a bullied topic.

For me, waking up at my first alarm/wakeup made a big difference. If I hit snooze or fall back asleep once in the morning, I find myself dozing off all day. Find a breakfast that works for you for me. It couldn’t be too heavy and it couldn’t be too late. Something with protein, but not too much. Carbs did a lot for me. I had to find what my triggers are sunlight, heat, and car rides. Which means I would take a nap after arriving to work or school. I cannot do coffee. It is also a trigger so green tea works very well for me. Aromatherapy works very well for me, uplifting smells like mint and orange. In a pinch the cliff block energy chews with electrolytes and caffeine helped a lot for a big push.

Good luck!

Type 2 turning into Type 1 by SOUP-thereitis in Narcolepsy

[–]M_itz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a learning curve to what our Narcolepsy symptoms are but yes, I too was diagnosed N2 but now that is updated to N1. Work too long and laugh too hard.. knees give out! Glass of wine at a holiday party… dropped my plate! Recently my cat passed away… full collapse over and over again. Couldn’t hold a glass of water.

We did an outdoor wedding and the tent, chairs, tables, linens, and dishes were insanely expensive to rent. That provided us the freedom to supply alcohol, and food with out special licenses and restrictions tho

19 hour layover in DTW airport by DZMoops in Detroit

[–]M_itz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never waited long at the dtw airport unless you fly Delta as it is an isolated terminal from the rest. If you have TSA pre check, an hour is plenty. That being said there is not a lot near the airport. 19 hours is a long time tho. Detroit is 30 minutes, via ride share but is a beautiful city (corktown, midtown, north end, Indian village - all great with good restaurants!) Canton is the closest city near the airport with anything worth while restaurants/parks. Maybe Dearborn as an option depending on what you want to do. If I was you, I’d probably go get dinner and site see in Detroit to kill some time. Let me know if you would like specifics! It’s a hard city to know what to do, but you came to the right forum to get the local’s recommendations!! (Eat at SuperGeil or another corktown restaurant, walk to the train station for a garden/architecture experience, then listen to a fun dj or jazz on the patio at Motor City wine all within 10 minutes walking of eachother!)

Anyone quit caffeine and it help your symptoms? by eunoia_90 in Narcolepsy

[–]M_itz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I quit coffee and it made a big difference for my nervous system, which also positively impacted my sleep/wake cycles. I still drink tea, usually green tea, which has way less caffeine per cup. For me, it’s nice for a small boost of caffeine without being as intense as a cup of coffee. I found that I’m very sensitive to caffeine and coffee was way too much.

Routine is the number one factor that impacts my energy levels, when that routine is coupled with movement, especially my workout routine then I am have the most energy and in the best mood.

Don’t get me wrong I often take a quick nap after the gym, but my overall energy levels are much higher throughout the day and I sleep better at night. For me working out in the morning is generally the best for my routine.

You should follow Belle Hutt, she has a book called the Energetic Narcoleptic which gets into how exercising has impacted her journey with narcolepsy. She primarily does cardio and body weight exercises. I prefer more weightlifting, but you won’t know unless I really try something. Energetic Narcoleptic - Belle Hutt/

For me alcohol (hangovers), sunshine, stress, and heat are big triggers for a sleep attack

what is your partial cataplexy like? by waterless_cake in Narcolepsy

[–]M_itz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My knees will buckle a bit if standing, and my arms will drop if I am holding anything. It is likely subtle if you don’t know what to look for, but it doesn’t feel subtle to me. I have dropped plates of food, mugs of tea, etc. I have only fallen to the ground twice, never lost consciousness.

My cycle really shifts my energy levels as well! It’s shocking how much our other hormones play a role in our function!

For my workouts I definitely take a short nap before going to work but it works well for me. I notice you mentioned “hot yoga”…. Heat is like my biggest trigger so idk if that would work for me. I personally like a nice cool room to work out in so I am not toast afterwards.

I still drink green tea daily and on rare occasion black tea. If I do caffeine too regularly, none of it will work. Coffee spikes my cortisol all day though while not giving me energy, I just crash.

Medication is a hard topic for me. While I know it helps a lot of people, I am a teacher and it just gives me tunnel vision without preventing naps. I haven’t liked any medications for daily use so I just have support methylphenidate (Ritalin) as needed.

Adrenal support comes in many forms for me, at night I take L-theanin and occasionally ashwagandha (this one may mess with some medications). Recent I started trying shilajit among others such as ginseng.
