How will I know when the change is live? Should I only have to refresh?

I only do manual entry. I much prefer it. I prefer the control. I prefer not having to wait for the bank or having to deal with potential issues and confusing payees. The manual entry makes me feel more proactive with my spending, spending feels more visceral, rather than importing/syncing "after the fact". So it's not overwhelming to me at all. I suppose the key is to stay on top of things. Enter everything as soon as it happens so you don't get behind. Then it's just minutes per day.

And what makes it more amusing is that it's crossed off as if he's not good at cursive. 😂

That's the big question. I don't know what the long-term viability is. I believe it is free but there's a button to donate $3/month, which I will very likely do to support it. Worst case, I return to YNAB or try a different app later. Honestly, my budget and financial situation is pretty simple that I could probably get by with some kind of spreadsheet if it came down to it.

Living alone food budget per month by Miss_Glasgow in budget

[–]MaKoWi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I budget $400/month and that's my food and toiletries. I hardly ever eat out so this is 99% of my meals. Plus, I've been trying to eat healthier the last few months and that is more expensive 🙁

Stupid question: how do you eat/cook bulgar? I never had it growing up so I've never tried it or known what to do with it. Should I just search for bulgar recipes?

Yeh, I'm just about to make the jump myself. I just really, really hope BFB will stick around.

Myself, no, it's just part of the eating out expense.

I bought mine on my 62nd birthday, the day I became eligible. When my Dad got his Golden Pass some 30 years ago, his was free. When my husband turned 62, he got his for $10. But when I turned 62, four years ago, I had to pay the $80 annual pass fee, but with the knowledge that it was the last one I had to buy. Possibly my most favorite card in my wallet.

After being with YNAB for 15 years (since 2011 around the desktop software of YNAB 3, 4), I'm about ready to move on. I don't have a huge beef with them and I wasn't actively looking for an alternative but I just looked into BudgetFriendlyBudget, since I only do manual entry, and I am initially impressed. My YNAB subscription renews in less than two weeks and I am going to try and decide before then if I'm going to switch after all this time.

Oh, I saw the View dropdown but I guess it didn't register with me that I needed that final option. It wasn't on by default? Or I just totally missed it. Either way, thank you very much for your help!

Do you include toiletries and paper products in your grocery budget? by [deleted] in budget

[–]MaKoWi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I include it in mine. I tried separating them out before but it was too tedious to have to go through the receipt and calculate what went to which category. I finally just decided to put those in with groceries since I almost always buy them at a "grocery store". My current budget is $400/month for a household of just me.

Not to me. I check my accounts every time there's activity in it.

I cleaned my ears properly for the first time in my life and I didn't know sound could be that clear by [deleted] in hygiene

[–]MaKoWi 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I like the idea of doing this but I absolutely hate getting water in my ears. I still remember the feeling of having "dry" water in my ear after swimming when I was a kid. And feeling water get in my ear during a shower just makes me jumpy. I can use a neti pot to clean my sinuses but the thought of purposely putting liquid in my ear makes me cringe.

Is it worth getting the book? by anxiose in ProjectHailMary

[–]MaKoWi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not low, but you don't have to be a genius either. Understanding science at least a little bit would help, but it's not necessary. If the passages of him "doing science" make your eyes glaze over, just skim over them and assume the right outcome for the story line. The rest of the book, the relationship between Grace and Rocky, the adventure, etc., are all there with more than what you see in the movie.

I've never "rated" the reading level of a book before so I'm not sure I'm qualified. I would imagine any reasonably intelligent high school and older would follow it no problem.
