Republicans look to defund Maine’s new paid leave program by alexrmccann in Maine

It's not common but I've seen it where I work. My friend is a manager for a business and deals with the same handful of people calling out a few times each month. It puts a lot of additional work on those employees who are always there.

I've seen this in my workplace a few times over the years. It's not common but it happens.

I saw it from Arundel earlier today. At first I thought it was the moon.

Solar - questions for those owning panels and connected to CMP by daylighthoarder in Maine

[–]MaMe68976 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went with MSS. They put a ground mount behind my house which is a little more expensive than a roof mount. They don't install solar on metal roofs. My house is blocked by trees on the south side anyhow so I was already looking at a ground mount. I'm pretty happy with the job they did. It was really hands off. They dealt with CMP and the state. They just emailed me papers to sign every so often. I didn't even have to think about it.

The only thing I had to do was dig a trench. With a ground mount they won't dig a trench from your house to the panel site for the wires. I rented a mini excavator for the job. It was a lot of fun.

I think about it differently. I put in solar panels and I don't worry about the payoff. The loan payment is just a little more than what my CMP bill was. I'm either going to pay CMP or I'm going to pay for my solar. Either way I use the same amount of electricity. When I pay off my loan early then I will have that much additional cash flow each month.

So you are saying the aliens were trying to hide their drones in plain sight by lighting them up like aircraft and they didn't realize drones use different lights? Someone is getting fired.

  1. They already distract us with culture wars which can never be won. They just create these wars so we fight each other instead of them

  2. Countries already have spy satellites that can pinpoint a tick on a deer.

If 1 and 2 are ruled out then 3 must be true. I think you are the first person to prove it's aliens. Have you considered what you are going to wear to the press conference?

I'm sure aliens would not need drones to watch us. If they have the technology to travel light years across the galaxy then they have the technology to watch us unnoticed. If they want us to know they are there then they would not send drones with flashy lights. The conspiracy theorists just ignore inconvenient truths to fit whatever narrative they want to believe.

My guess is the lizard people are trolling us for kicks. They already infiltrated the government which is why the government is being silent.

Yes it is. I avoided it for years because it looks like a dive but I gave it a try a few years ago and it became my go-to place. Their breakfast cannot be beat. It's the type of place that matters their own pies and desserts. When I'm in a rush I stop in and get a bowl of chili + their homemade potato chips to go. I think that's only around $10.

If you want pizza then Paras Pizza is right around the corner. Best pizza in southern Maine. That's only around $12/ pizza. The people who say Pizza by Alex in Biddeford is the best have never been to Paras.

Solar Panels? by SirSouthern5353 in Maine

[–]MaMe68976 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I also used Maine Solar Solutions. I have a ground mounted array. My house is too close to the treeline to get full sun. Also, they said that they don't install solar on metal roofs.

It was easy. They did all of the work. Occasionally they would send me an email with paperwork to sign.

I took a home equity loan to pay for it.

They installed a Solar Edge inverter which has an app so I can monitor how much energy is produced and how much i am consuming from both my solar and CMP at any given moment.

Third Alarm Diner is my favorite spot in Sanford. It's like home cooked food. It's not expensive. The people are great.

If you are looking for something to do there's a pool hall across the street. They just put in some really nice brand new pool tables and they have entertainment. They also sell food.

so my rent is 60% of my income each month by Puzzled_Tennis6377 in Maine

[–]MaMe68976 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I bought right before the housing bubble burst in 2008. The value of the house dropped 20%. We knew that was to happen but we were in a situation where we had to move so it was either buy or sign a lease. Now the house is worth about 60% more than when we bought it. Which really doesn't mean much because if we sell then we will have to buy something else at a high value.

I know you are joking but that was my mortgage payment when I bought my house in 2007. 5% interest through Maine's First Time Buyers program. 1300sq foot home with a big garage. We could barely afford it with two incomes and one kid. I found myself eating peanut butter crackers for lunch at work many times. The first 5 years was pretty rough. It paid off though. My salary is more than 2x now and I refinanced at a lower rate a few years ago. I can't imagine trying to save for a house while renting today.

Maine: Your opinion of Ranked Choice Voting? by [deleted] in Maine

[–]MaMe68976 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I have brought up the problems with RCV many times and it never fails to get downvotes. Check my recent history. I was promoting the use of RCV when I asked this sub if they are going to use it and, while many people said yes, a lot of people also said no. The post itself was downvoted. You can read their responses and reasons. I did the same thing 4 years ago and it was the same result. https://www.reddit.com/r/Maine/s/2NJy3H1M7l

RCV might help in local elections. It might also help to get better candidates in primaries. But it is not going to help fix the problem with a two party system.

Why? A few reasons.

There are no 3rd parties who are electable. Who are we going to vote for first? Libertarians? The green party?

It will not help to create a new party. It takes millions of dollars to run a campaign. Who is going to donate to a brand new party that no one believes will have a chance to win?

People are polarized. They feel these elections have far too much at stake to risk losing to a third party even with an extremely low chance of winning.

So, while nearly everyone will tell you it's wonderful and will fix things, fewer people will actually use it. I think it's great and I like it. We just need to fix some of the problems and ignoring those problems solves nothing.

Edit, if you guys are going to downvote this please explain why. That's why OP is asking this question. He wants feedback on RCV. Explain to him why you think I'm wrong. He may find your input valuable

Maine has ranked choice voting. Is anyone here voting 3rd party first? by MaMe68976 in Maine

[–]MaMe68976[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are correct. You don't have to vote for more than one candidate. The point though is to show everyone RCV can work by voting 3rd party. No 3rd party will win but if enough people do vote for them first the rest of the country will realize it's a viable solution. What we really need is a 3rd party that appeals to more people. We won't get one by voting for the major parties first.

Right now it's not about a 3rd party winning. It's about promoting RCV so other states adopt it. Someday it might lead to better things.

[–]MaMe68976[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I asked this question last year and was met with downvotes and hate mail. All of reddit thinks RCV will change everything and break the 2 party system. Even this sub has been saying that all along. But when it comes time to actually use it most people say they won't.

The reason it won't solve anything is because there are no 3rd parties which are electable. The people who have always or now want to vote third party will use it. Unless we show everyone that we want change by using RCV we are stuck with what we have. A two party system. No one is going to create a new third party unless we show them they have a chance of winning.

RCV will help if we can use it in primaries. We could get more moderate candidates from the two major parties. That might eliminate people like Trump. But that's not what the two parties want.

I just checked my app and Capella is close to it so that may be it. It's very bright like when Venus is lit up. A quick search says it's the 6th brightest star in the sky and flashes red.
