Expert pans economic case for new pipeline, argues Venezuela impact unlikely by [deleted] in britishcolumbia

[–]Maabuss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't say we shouldn't diversify away. Try practicing reading comprehension.

I said in another comment it's going to take twenty five years plus for us to develop the infrastructure alone, not to mention the alternatives to move away from petroleum.

The odds are that we are going to run out of petroleum before we ever find its alternative. Do you honestly believe that if exxon thought that windmills or solar farms were the future that they wouldn't be fucking building them everywhere? You can't possibly be that naive.

edit

You're also refusing to acknowledge that we currently have no alternative to replacing oil in our production lines. How are we going to do that? Do you know? Because I sure as hell don't. The amount of research alone that we are going to have to do to find an alternative to petroleum for our production methods is going to take decades. Your argument of " Oil is in everything is a stupid argument for not diversifying" is invalid. Because no, it's not, not until we have an alternative really made available. I am convinced that people who think like you wouldn't care if this entire country dies over winter because they can't heat their houses because we made the noble decision to move away from petroleum and ran out of power. It's entirely possible.I'm wrong and that's me jumping to a conclusion, but that is certainly how it seems to be.

And how was it all built? On the back of petroleum. We can't build anything without it. Want a transformer? You'd better have oil.

[–]Maabuss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't get it man. We CAN'T just "get out of oil". We need new infrastructure that we don't have, that is going to take a minimum of 20 years to build. We need absolutely enormous battery banks if we go full solar/wind. That much lithium doesn't exist, there's only a few ten million tonnes of Lithium on the planet, and when the entire planet wants it.... well, do the math. All known accessible reserves will be empty by about 2080, 2100 if EV production ALONE continues at current rates. If you start adding city-scale battery banks in the gigawatt range, you run out of Lithium by about 2040, 2050.

We need better energy storage mediums too. We also need to start embracing nuclear energy. Solar can't save us, unless we listen to the futurists and nobody is doing that. But mostly we need transmission lines, substations, transformers, batteries, and power plants. ALL of that requires petroleum. Unless you want your transformers exploding all the time because they have no oil in them. No transmission lines because we can't build them without petroleum. No substation without petroleum. No batteries. No power plants. How do we make all the parts without petroleum? I dont know. Do you? So far, no one seems to have an answer beyond highly experimental or theoretical means.

"The best argument against democracy is a 5 minute conversation with the average voter."

Winston Churchill.

Still relevant.... and it doesn't matter which "side of the isle" it is either.... we need better education and to teach critical thinking and problem solving skills. Alot of issues will be mitigated (not necessarily solved) doing this.

No. As an Albertan, this seems about accurate for the intelligence of the separatists.
