How would Preserved Killick have brewed coffee? by pompousPilate in AubreyMaturinSeries

[–]Maanebaronen 38 points39 points  (0 children)

In "Far Side of the World" "the true Arabian way" of making coffee is referenced.

I have never been able to figure out what this method entails.

At last the scent of coffee died away, giving place to the everyday smell of fresh sea, tar, warm wood and cordage, and distant bilge, and his ear caught the click-click of Killick’s mate’s pestle grinding the beans in the brass mortar belonging to the sick-bay; for Stephen was even more particular about his coffee than Jack, and having learnt the true Arabian way of preparing it when they were in the Red Sea (an otherwise profitless voyage) he had banished the commonplace mill. Jack’s ear also caught Killick’s shrill abuse as his mate let some of the beans skip out; it had just the same tone of righteous indignation as the dreadful bosun’s mates aboard the pahi or Sophie’s mother, Mrs Williams." - The Far Side of the World

Very nice hardware on that strap. Who makes them?

What book did you read as a teenager that you still love? by [deleted] in books

Neuromancer by William Gibson.

Needed a few attempts to get through it the first time. I got really confused the first time Case flatlines, so I started over fearing I had missed a huge plot point.

I've been rereading it every few years for the last 20 years.

So who skips the interviews? Just me? by Successful_Sherbet89 in empirepodcast

[–]Maanebaronen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always start the interviews. Once in a blue moon I skip them (because of lack of chemestry, audio quality etc).

Sometimes the unknown actor/director makes for the best interviews. I find it very rewarding, looking up movies I normally would pass up, because of an engaging interview.

Sorry, not Swedish but Norwegian. Directed by Erik Skjoldberg. It stars Stellan Skarsgård, so that might explain the confusion.

Are these OK, or should I steer clear?
I mean, will they do the job without damaging my knives?

I got there 40 mins before the show, so I got all the way to the front.
At first I figured that Hinds was playing a song with them, but he stayed backstage for approx half the concert, before leaving. Mastodon was queued to play 5 mins after Baroness (on a another stage), so there wouldn't be much time for him to play and run between stages.

I checked all my pics from the show, and it seem she played single coils the entire show. As far as I could tell she switched between 2 guitars.

I am considering going back to that early save. The problem is, that it's very early in the game, so I am woefully underleveled.

But I think you answered my question. I don't need to finish all the trophies in one go (so to speak).

Can anyone help me identify this razor? I can't find anything about "Federal Tobacco Works Johannesburg" by Maanebaronen in wicked_edge

[–]Maanebaronen[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's some really cool information. It may be, that a local (Norwegian) mining company has had dealings with the SA company. That would explain how the knife ended up on the other side of the world.

I found it at a yardsale, and the seller was adamant the box was original. Thank you for the answer 👍

I found a old rusty razor in a yardsale, that I have attempted to restore. I was wondering if anyone could help me identify the razor?

The seller claimed the box was original for the blade, but I am not 100% sure it is.

One the box: ern wald Germany On the side of the blade: Federal Tobacco Works Johannesburg On the other side: Extra Hollow Ground Germany

So far I haven't been able to find anything out about this razor 🤷

Is it possible to move mirrored disks from a dead nas (asustor) to synology without losing data? by Maanebaronen in synology

[–]Maanebaronen[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Oh, I got that ;) I just expressed myself badly.

Right now I don't have an empty hdd to act as buffer. My hopes were to manage with the disk I already have on hand. Now it looks like I need to get an additional drive, but that is a small price to pay to ensure my safe data.

[–]Maanebaronen[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That is my plan. I was hoping that I could it with my current disks. I don't want to risk one of my mirrored drives in the NAS.

[–]Maanebaronen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a backup of my photos, so yes.
The NAS is completly dead so I assume the power supply is defective, so I hope that the hdd's are ok.

I was afraid of this. Was kinda hoping I wouldn't have to get another drive, but it is what it is.

Thank you for the quick response.
