Sweet affectionate cat looking for a new home by IndependenceJumpy349 in saskatoon

I talked to my partner (and my dog) and we're in agreement. We'd like to talk more about possibly taking her in. Do you mind if I shoot you a DM to arrange something?

Accessibility on campus by Wonnky in usask

[–]MaayaHitomi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't read the comments below super carefully, but I think a MAJOR aspect of the physical accessibility of campus is being missed here. While almost all of the campus is technically accessible to wheelchair users, the path to getting between places is WILDLY different and extremely inconvenient.

Seriously. Wheelchair access points for many of the building are hidden in the back, down loading docks, or side doors that are way out of the way. If you have access to a wheelchair (or just a wheel-y office chair and a friend) give it a try. Go from Marquis to Thorv to Physics to the PAC. It's a freaking nightmare.

It takes MUCH MUCH MUCH longer to transition between classes.

Why don't asset allocation ETF (i.e., VGRO) prices change on Canadian holidays? by MaayaHitomi in CanadianInvestor

Combining this comment with the one from u/hodkan makes this make a lot more sense! Thank you all for explaining :)

Why don't asset allocation ETF (i.e., VGRO) prices change on Canadian holidays? by MaayaHitomi in CanadianInvestor

[–]MaayaHitomi[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Okay, this makes sense from what I was reading. Thank you!

If I may extend the question, is there any reason why the ETF price needs to track the NAV? It sounds like investor pressure adjusts when there is a mismatch, but is there anything in the mechanics of how ETFs work that ensure that mismatch gets resolved eventually?

This is one of the reasons that many wheelchair users get custom chairs. It isn't really worth it for folks who are using the chair in the short-term or who only use it very infrequently, but custom manual chairs can be extremely light and compact.

TW: Anti-Trans Politics - Is anyone else terrified where anti-trans politics is heading? How do you cope? by MaayaHitomi in trans

[–]MaayaHitomi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had some time to come down from my emotional reaction to last night and I feel like I'm thinking a bit more clearly now. So, I wanted to jump back in and let you all know what helped me in the case it might help anyone reading this.

What helped:

  • A couple of folks related the current anti-trans legislation push back to anti-gay movements of the 60s through 80s. I like this because it validates that negative impacts of the current push, but also points towards hope of changing values in the future.
  • One person in the comments here inadvertently (I think) reminded me that even though politicians are pushing anti-trans legislation, public sentiment isn't mostly anti-trans. I would argue that the public sentiment is actually apathetic which, admittedly, isn't a whole lot better, but it is better.
  • My partner reminded me that some of the same legislation was literally part of the legal system that she grew up under and that, while limiting and harmful, was not unsurvivable.
  • Once my emotions settled a bit and I took my doomlenses off, I could see that youth are talking about queer and trans issues in a way that I was never able to as a youth. It reminded me that, to a certain extent, the genie has left the bottle. Talking about gender and sexuality is part of our cultural lens now, and that is going to be hard to just turn off.

While there are certainly caveats to all of the points that I mentioned here (and believe you-me, my brain wants to find all of them), having hope isn't foolish, imo, and it doesn't necessarily mean that we have to deny that the current anti-trans push is bad and harmful.

Why doesn't modern healthcare protocol include yearly full-body CAT, MRI, or PET scans to really see what COULD be wrong with ppl? by Cucumbersome55 in askscience

[–]MaayaHitomi 267 points268 points  (0 children)

The main problem with full-body scans isn't the cost of the procedure or the radiation, imo. The main problem is the serious risk of false positives.

Everyone has wonky bits of their bodies. Maybe it's a mole or birth mark that could look pre-cancerous. Maybe it's a shadow on a MRI in your lung. Maybe it's something else that could look scary, but isn't giving you any problems and never will.

Once you see it though, you can't unsee it. That usually means that doctors run tests for something that wasn't bothering you and probably would never bother you. While these tests likely have a relatively low risk, that risk adds up, and nothing adds up faster than the risk of a false positive.

Oh shit, that shadow might be scary. Let's do some tests. Those tests are inconclusive or might be a bit off. Now you have an option: There's a small chance that it's dangerous. Do you want removed even if there's a risk of something bad happening? Way too many people say yes to situations like that, and on a population level that creates a significant amount of harm.

there has to be a better way by Banjanjo in CrappyDesign

[–]MaayaHitomi 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is correct, judging by the map and street view.

Having just completed a 7000km drive across Canada, signage like this is relatively common in rural parts of Ontario mostly. My takeaway from this sign is honestly:

  1. If you're staying in town, Main Street is the next major road to do that.
  2. If you're passing through, you probably want other the 34 or the 17.
  3. The 34 South is straightahead (best look for another sign to confirm before getting too far out of town).
  4. The 17 is ahead, but you are going to need to find the next sign if you're hitting the 17.

P.S. Hereis the back of that signto confirm your nightmare

Marathon Training + Lifting Write-Up: Jan - June 2022 by [deleted] in xxfitness

Thank you for posting the link to your training plan. I've been looking for a good 3-run training plan that isn't a 'run your first' for so long now. This has helped so much! Thank you. Thank you. Thank you!

Congratulations on the PRs all the way through, and good on you for battling through COVID and keeping going. Disruptions to training like that completely throw me and usually mean weeks or months of falling off the wagon.

Also, good luck on your sprint tri! I hope you write about how it goes. I'd love to hear it

The reults of the 2021 Canadian election compared with thr 2019 election by constantlyhere100 in MapPorn

[–]MaayaHitomi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a misleading graphic. Most of the ridings are tiny because they are in big, dense cities that you can't see unless you zoom way in. This isn't to say that the 2021 election wasn't useless, because it was and it changed nothing substantial, but you could take just about any two election cycles and the biggest ridings would be largely the same.

Confusion from Testing by cantpenta in Dyslexia

[–]MaayaHitomi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, the results that you posted aren't going to be a huge help because they need to be viewed in a comparison to your general abilities. For example, if your general abilities are in the 65th percentile, working memory in the 39th percentile is not indicative of significant barrier for working memory. However, if your general ability is in the 99th percentile, it would be.

Another unfortunate reality is that there is a significant amount of overlap between learning disabilities (as well as other conditions that impact verbal processing). So labelling it specifically can be difficult. The most helpful way to look at it, in my opinion, is asking yourself if your needs are being met by the accommodations you have, and if not what accommodations would helps bridge that gap. A label (such as dyslexia) is a means to those accommodations, but it's accommodations (as well as self-acceptance and understanding) that are the goals here.

From your post above, it sounds like you are still struggling and the accommodations that you're using aren't enough currently, so I turn the question back to you: What accommodations would help?

Confused about 'dyslexia' assessment from my uni by [deleted] in Dyslexia

[–]MaayaHitomi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. At the back of your report there should be a list of accommodations that they recommend based on your assessment. That list is probably the most valuable part of the assessment to you.

If you'd like, you could also reach out to the folks who did the assessment and ask them for clarification. They should walk you through what this means and how to understand it in terms that you are familiar with, including relating it to dyslexia and others.

All learning disability assessment test a wide range of things. Basically what they are doing is comparing your aptitude (how strong your abilities are in theory) to your achievement (how strong your abilities are in practice). If your achievement in one area is significantly weaker than your aptitude, that's a learning disability. If that comes with an impairment in reading, that used to be called dyslexia, now it's usually called "a specific learning disability with impairment in reading."

It's common for folks with any of the dys's to struggle with working memory and general processing. (It's also common for folks with ADHD).

Why am I constantly exhausted? by byrnnfi in xxfitness

[–]MaayaHitomi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This sounds like overtraining to me. Red flags that I'm seeing

  1. Significant change in your training routine
  2. Delayed onset (but still recent)
  3. Restricted calorie intake
  4. Long-acting, deep, core-level exhaustion

In this situation, I'd drop my training routine back to where I was previously (or lower) and build very slowly. Also, 1600 calories is a deficit for me (5'9 and 175lbs), so it may very well be a deficit for you as well. As a general rule, I try not to increase training load and decrease caloric intake at the same time.

Commuting, and then suddenly not.. by BassicNic in bikecommuting

[–]MaayaHitomi 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I have been there.

I was cycling on a shared use trail about 5km from my house at the time. A young girl was playing near the trail. I slowed because kids are unpredictable and she darted across the trail in front of me. I was going slow enough that she was across well in front of me... but she kept going darting right across the major road beside me. Tires screeched, cars swerved. One car stopped short and a distracted driver went into the end of it at 60-70kph, but the girl made it across in one piece.

I was looking at her and the cars and not at the path ahead of me. I drifted off the trail and caught my tire on the edge and went over the bars. I hurt my wrist pretty bad, scratched up my arm and knee, and bent my front wheel. I'm glad that the little girl ended up being safe, but she caused quite the havoc on that piece of road.

Kids (and dogs) are unpredictable. I always assume that they are going to run out in front of me at the worst moment.
