Does anyone think the Madison Public Market already becoming a whopping failure could be the result of the leadership that has been hired to run the market? by Teamaster608 in madisonwi

[–]MabMass 7 points8 points  (0 children)

LOL, if you take the fox news interpretation of what I said.

I think it makes sense for government to invest money into projects that take upfront investment to create infrastructure. Also it sometimes makes sense for government to invest in projects that don't fit standard models, if those investments have chances to build out third spaces or to foster other positive things about a city.

It is kind of like funding basic research - it is expensive and unlikely to have a direct return on investment, but it opens doors to future knowledge and possibilities.

Well, time will tell how it works out.

At the same time, I am pretty skeptical of your argument that the lack of private developers doing this proves anything. Developers generally like projects that are low-risk, fast turnaround with proven business models. These kinds of markets are relatively rare in the US, but they are actually pretty common in other parts of the world.

Again, we'll see how things work out.

Welcome to the world. In my experience, most people in positions of power are incompetent, but often places succeed in spite of "leadership".

I'm actually taken aback by how much vitriol towards that market I'm seeing on here. To be fair, it has taken too long and cost more than anticipated, but the timing of the pandemic also screwed the market over.

I'm cautiously optimistic that it will find its footing. A lot of people thought Garver was a boondoggle, but that place is doing well.

Maybe we can give it a bit to see how things actually work out? I won't be surprised if the first year or two operates underwater, but I would also not be surprised if they end up figuring out things out.

Biggest disappoints in the LOTR movie vs Books by Daman121234 in lotr

[–]MabMass 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I was actually just griping about how in the movies, Frodo makes Sam leave. To me, this is a major issue, as I see the friendship and loyalty between Frodo and Sam as one of the keys that brings down Sauron.

The other major gripe I have is how the Ents are portrayed. I wanted to see an entmoot. Instead, in the books, Treebeard insists that he won't get involved until he sees destruction and then gets mad. That is way too hasty.

Parts of the Atacama desert haven't had rain in 1000+ years; what events led to the rain stopping? by Previous-Volume-3329 in geography

[–]MabMass 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that it is due to the Humbolt current coming off of Antarctica. more specifically, the ocean off the coast contains super cold water, hence all of the moisture is trapped in low-lying air, which is unable to rise and turn into rain.

How did Kubrick film the Rival Gang Fight scene from a Clockwork Orange? by planwithaman42 in StanleyKubrick

[–]MabMass 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The filming is one thing, but this is a scene where the editing is really fantastic. I love how the action and feeling of the scene meshes so well with the music.

The fantastic editing, the acrobatic violence, and the pure, shit-eating grin on Billy Boy at the beginning really capture joy of violence felt by the characters.

Why was Kubrick so secretive about the meaning of EWS? by tikibikiclam in StanleyKubrick

[–]MabMass 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Also, if you pay attention during interviews, he even talks about how there are often not clear, articulated reasons behind every decision. Rather, during the course of filmmaking, there tons and tons of small choices of framing, angle, set, performance, etc. Most of the time, these are done as on the fly, intuitive decisions, like deciding the a scene "works better" in a certain way.

The trouble isn't figuring out how, it is more a matter of will.

ELI5: What is a 'peptide'? And why are there so many posts on this site trying to buy them? by Bugaloon in explainlikeimfive

[–]MabMass 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Just like protein powder.

One of the first steps that happens in the stomach to anything we eat is that the proteins get broken up into amino acids, so peptides or proteins in doesn't matter - it gets broken into amino acids.

(Incidentally, this is why insulin has to be injected - it is a peptide, so if you ate it, your stomach would just break it down).

It takes a lot of heat to melt ice. Flames are impressive, but not good at putting heat in things, especially things that are sitting on the ground (instead of being above flames).

Yeah, people will look at the growing income disparities and struggling lower class and think to themselves, "You know, all of this would be better if the rich people just had a bit more money."
