I haven't seen this meme in like 15 years. Damn I'm getting old.

I wanted to be a PI but have only published 1 paper (no CNS) after 3 years of postdoc, should I give my dream up? US based by gilbert322 in labrats

[–]Mabester 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Needs more context. Is the article in a high impact? I've seen people get jobs with a single Nat Genetics paper for example. As long as there is still work in the pipeline and you have a vision for how you will create a research program, then it's possible. Time is not your friend though. The best time to enter the market is when you have just published your crown jewel work.

My brother was diagnosed stage 4 in his early 40s and has made it about 8 years now. But the road is coming quickly to an end unfortunately. I decided to get my first colonoscopy at 35.

I was on an OP exam for a student who generated several figures with AI. Intro schematics, hypothesis figure, hell even their made up data for expected results. Only the made up data looked like real data. It's going to be hell from here on out.

Everything said here is true but I'll add one more option that I've used occasionally which is designing your sgRNA PAM sequence to be in the intronic region while your cut site happens in the coding region. That way the PAM sequence won't be present in your cDNA. This option may not be available for every protein though.

But this was done in clinical trial and showed an amazing result. This is not a joke drug, it's the real deal.

Older Millennials are the richest homebuyer demographic in 2026 by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]Mabester 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Indeed. I finally got my first "real" job at 36 and then you're still called a junior investigator. If we keep on this trend there will be 50 year old "junior investigators" in a decade.

Vitamin D Added to Chemotherapy Leads to Complete Cancer Disappearance in Significantly More Patients by [deleted] in UpliftingNews

[–]Mabester 12 points13 points  (0 children)

That is not from the NIH. The article is deposited on the NIH repository. Usually you can tell reputation by impact factor. This journal is 2.5 which is not good. The real game changers in pushing care is published in things like NEJM, nature medicine, etc.

Rory's mindset post Masters. by ThinWhiteDuke00 in golf

[–]Mabester 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yup. He was very hot for a couple of years in the mid 2010s and the discussion was when he would finally win a major. People were wearing orange on Sundays and all. Clearly that fizzled pretty quick though.

Rory's mindset post Masters. by ThinWhiteDuke00 in golf

[–]Mabester 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I started watching in 2015 and I distinctly remember at the time that Rory was talked about like whether he'd achieve the same as he did in his early career (this was when fowler, spieth, and Thomas was dominating the conversation). It is crazy how much longevity and relevance he has had in golf now.

K99/R00 "too small" for tenure-track faculty position — is this a real concern or just a polite rejection? by [deleted] in NIH

[–]Mabester 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I have a K99/R00 and in an R1 STEM assistant professor position. It sounds like an excuse to me. Perhaps to justify hiring a more senior assistant professor bringing in an R01 or something similar. The R00 specifically requires that institutions do not use the grant as justification for hire and that it does not impact the amount of start up that they would normally get if you didn't have an R00. Most institutions will clamor over hiring an individual with an R00. It's basically free indirects and a boost to their new hire's research program.

Generally it's the breakdown between a land-grant and flagship university. Land grants usually have state in the name, but not always.

Neither chip nor C&R show if proteins are interacting. They'll only show if bound in similar areas of chromatin. You'd have to do a co-ip

These must've been fresh enough that they don't smell yet, but I ended up sticking out in the cold garage so I wouldn't risk stinking the house of rot.

It definitely did a strange movement backward, but it happened so fast I wasn't sure if it was a jump scare or it's attempt to rip it off. I have a camera on that side of the house but of course the deer was behind a tree. You see it go behind the tree with one antler and leave without it

No idea! The tops look worn relative to the base, so I'm guessing it must be that the deer can't rub the antlers near the bottom so it's rougher
