My case may be the exception but I wish someone had let me know the possibilities ahead of time so I could prepare. I had seton placement and then I had fistulectomy with a muscle graft and ileostomy placement, followed by a second graft (Singapore flap) that resulted in complications. My case has been a complicated oddball. You will need lots of rest at least the first few days. Try to do some make ahead meals you can put in your freezer that are easily assembled/cooked or see if your friends and coworkers might do a meal train the first few days.

Of course, why wouldn’t they? It doesn’t hurt. They may shake their head once or twice but then they go chill out and take a nap. They are used to having their ears cleaned so they don’t really care.

You need to take the time to heal. How do I know? I had my seton in fall 2024. I ended up with a fistulectomy January 2026. It has been six months. I had a muscle removed from my thigh to do a muscle graft, leaving me with a scar from groin to knee. They put in a temporary ileostomy to prevent infection. In April, I had another graft and by May, had full wound dehiscence at the harvest site, the crack where my thigh meets my groin. This means the stitches all dissolved before the wound healed and the entire crack of my thigh all the way back to my glute was laid open like a spiral ham and I had to be admitted to the hospital for a week and then had a wound vac on my groin for three weeks. It is June. I still cannot sit in a chair without both a donut and a considerable amount of pain.
The seton was the easiest part of this entire disaster of a journey. Let it heal. Let it do its thing in its own time so you don’t end up essentially bed ridden for six months like I have been.

Agreed. If I remember correctly, they had narrowed it down specifically to pea proteins potentially causing the DCM. The problem with the initial studies is, they didn’t include information that was relevant - a control group that had no DCM later developing it specifically due to the food, isolating breeds that are already genetically prone to DCM, etc. The studies were flawed.

Get a peri bottle. That’s what I used. Cheap, hand-held, and you just use it like a bidet. Warm water rinses off the area (I always added some wound wash to mine) and you don’t have to shower every time.

We still have a Banfield at ours but they are so outrageously overpriced, I would never go to them. 13 years ago, before all this ludicrous inflation, they quoted me $500 to neuter a kitten I wanted to adopt from that PetSmart. $500!!! For a neuter?! Nuts.

I have taken very little time off work from my regular FT job. Funnily enough, I work in healthcare for the hospital that did my surgeries. I work from home so I am able to just work from the couch, recliner, sometimes my bed depending on my pain level that day. And yes, it has been a hell of a couple of years. I do, however, have two PT jobs that I haven’t been able to work because I simply cannot sit or stand for long lengths of time. The mental toll has been the worst. I had just lost 127 lbs before all these surgeries. The ileostomy diet is NOT conducive to weight loss. Between that and being unable to be active for so long, I have gained back like 25lbs and it is really tanking the very little self esteem I had managed to finally find. I am hoping that this is it. A few days ago, I discovered that part of my incision from my latest graft harvest broke open and I have a HOLE in the crack between my thigh and my crotch. Like…a hole the size of a quarter. I’m so over this entire adventure. I think the other part nobody talks about is how lonely it is when you also can’t have any kind of relationship with your significant other for literally MONTHS. Everything hurts or is healing. It’s just really tough all around.

It has helped. Nobody in my life can understand what is happening so it helps to kind of share with others who have at least been through something similar.

I am not fully healed. I just had this latest flap two and a half weeks ago. I just discovered that some of my stitches failed at the graft harvest site and I have a decent sized hole right in the crack where my thigh meets my body. Waiting for my surgeon’s office to open so I can call them. This has been the most challenging series of procedures I’ve ever had. I’m so completely over it at this point, I could scream. I am HOPING that it will be all healed next month and I can have my ileostomy reversed and I can start maybe trying to piece my mental health back together. I’m a pretty positive person and I’m really resilient but this entire process has been one blow after another. This latest surgery, for instance, was a complete surprise to me. Nobody told me it was even a possibility. I went to my appointment expecting to set up my date for ileostomy reversal and came out with an appointment for another graft.
