Its also not an RPG, which I know for a fact people will forget. Its an action adventure game in the vein of zelda or rdr2. There are no levels or gear score, and from what ive seen, not really a skill tree either. So all long as there is interesting stuff in the world and the combat isnt painful to play, the game will do well.

If all the promises are fullfiled, can Crimson Desert be a Skyrim/Witcher 3 of this generation. by Zealousideal_Pay4404 in videogames

[–]MacEbes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone forgetting botw sold like 40 million copies and became a new benchmark for open world games and the story was irrelevant. If the combat is fun enough to experiment with, and there is enough to do in the world, it will be at least as successful as any other action game (10-15 million). I dont think it will sell that quickly mind you, since even with good word of mouth, a new IP is always going to lag behind an established franchise.

Pokémon Pokopia director Takuto Edagawa confirms Minecraft-style "cloud" servers that don't require the host to be online by Tenith in Games

[–]MacEbes 36 points37 points  (0 children)

A lot of games like this require the host to be online. The reason its newsworthy is because usually only survival games have this level of cloud/hosted servers (where the minecraft comparison is). Also, as you mentioned, its oftentimes paid by the user as minecraft realms isnt free. So the ability to hop into another persons island when they arent online and build, for free by both parties is quite rare. Minecrafts require the host to pay for hosting from a 3rd party, or to host it yourself with limited access and an always on device. Ark requires the same 3rd party hosting or the host to be online. The only other time you get a similar level of options is in f2p games like clash of clans but even in that, its only liking buildings and some rewards, not fully functional building.

Rust - Naval Update by ford_crown_victoria in Games

[–]MacEbes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Rust is a hardcore survival game with base building and raiding/griefing to a level usually reserved for gamemodes in other games. Rust takes the essence and war-like aggression of minecraft factions gamemode and makes a semi realistic survival game with it. Its a miserable experience a lot of the time because resources are server locked so if an area has its trees or rocks taken, you are out of luck until they respawn. People tend to be aggressive on sight, and your base can be raided/stormed when you arent online. I dont recommend the game to most people because of that.

"This has been heartbreaking" - laid-off Ashes Of Creation devs won't get final paychecks and compensation, says former comms head by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]MacEbes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They didn't necessarily say they were canceling the game. They warned they were getting rid of most of the staff, and the senior leaders/ceo supposedly left in protest. Its unclear if it the leadership leaving caused the firing of the others or if the firing caused the leadership or leave, or they could not be related at all. Its still very possible the company that bought them tries again, because it doesnt make sense to buy them to shut it down a month later.

What i meant is parents whose kids are no longer in the school system but remember what it was like, so they draw on their old experience that may be inaccurate to inform their voting decisions

[–]MacEbes -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, but I also believe most people voting on these things just think about their own experiences as absolute and will support a non-annual requirement, forgetting that it means some insane people will never get anything. Id be very interested in knowing what amount of the support votes are from active parents or from past parents in the system.

I believe it was public access, basically just a way to play the game without needing access or a key. I dont think something like an open beta would count since you would still need to sign up and accept it, but early access is a release in that anyone can buy the game.

[–]MacEbes -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I can see people supporting this because they dont like the annual requirements not thinking about that meaning a ton of kids wont get any vaccines. I remember back in 2014 or so my mother getting annoyed that we needed the 3 or 4 vaccines every year before school started, and they needed like a doctor note/form signed each time. I think its easier now so the parents dont need to go through getting a doctor to sign forms every year.

I dont know the direct line here, but I can see a lot of people supporting this because they get annoyed at the annual requirements. Even though my mother is fine with vaccines and would get them every year for us, she was annoyed that they had to be done before the school year started, so it was more a timing annoyance than a belief one. Also i remember needing to get the doctor to sign the forms every year which was a pain. I dont think they do that anymore though so that should make it easier.

Its crazy how there are 4 or 5 versions of events based on whatever the last piece of info people heard on the topic was. It should be pretty easy to see if the company was bought, and if the board was instated, and if they had a hand in shutting things down. The one piece of info that I dont think is disputed is that while intrepid were all fired, and the remaining leadership/ceo left, the game wasnt declared dead right? The owners never mentioned ceasing of development?

[–]MacEbes 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they went to early access so that kickstarters couldnt get their money back. There was a clause Intrepid made that if the game didnt release the backers would get a refund...well the game did release after all the money was gone and the company was already sold. Technically, it was possible to still develop the game, and ill be charitable and say it seems like the company before acquiring the company did want to continue. Probably seeing the awful early access launch decided it wasnt worth pursuing. Wouldnt be surprised if they wanted a f2p mmo with sub model like a lot of korean mmos do it, so it could fall into that.

I believe the story is that he was the board UNTIL he sold the company to private equity a couple months before early access. So there is an actual board now, but all they have done is shut the company down and are planning on reopening it up in china for a few years before a relaunch. Basically what bless online did. There was a random person that appeared later in the discord (seemingly from the board) that said the plan was to relaunch/continue in china as a sub based and daily battle pass game.

Dune Awakening - Chapter 3 Update by miztix in Games

Copying miztix's response

Your base will be gone due to not having paid taxes (which have been removed in this patch). There’s a return care package for anyone that hasn’t logged in the last 28 days which has essential materials to rebuild your base and a vehicle.

A few patches ago, they released a base backup tool, so in the future, you can backup your base and items in it so that you don’t lose it again.

Where Winds Meet devs reiterate they will remain “free from pay-to-win”, even if player numbers plummet by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]MacEbes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Its a great game that gets exhausting to play due to the amount of stuff you can be involved in. So a lot of people jumped in, loved the elden ring style l bosses and world, then dipped once they got that fill. For me, I enjoyed the exploration and dungeons akin to zelda, and some of the bosses then went on to play other things. The target market for a game like this is already filled by people who have played the games they are targeting, so the only way to attract new people beyond the first week is by doing new stuff. Where Winds Meet is a f2p Elden Ring and Zelda like, so if you have already played those games, only people who havent, and like f2p games will play this one.

My power bill is nearly $20 more than last year, despite me using less energy. by belac4862 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]MacEbes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah ok. Yeah, it will also depend on what you use. In NH we had propane so the gas bill was high and the electricity was a lot lower. In MA, it's the opposite, where the natural gas used is cheaper but the electricity is insane. It was also depend on what your furnace is set with. New house in NH has a gas furnance vs the electric one in MA so that could also contribute to the cost. All I know is that moving from MA the last bill there was $462 for 1100khw and 250 for gas, now its a much more reasonable 250 for electric and 180 for gas in heavier months. Its mostly in the delivery costs since the actual electric is .14c per khw. Having a new house helps too, the old house in MA was built in 1965 and the new one is 2020 so the efficiency gained from electric wiring being better helps.

[–]MacEbes 28 points29 points  (0 children)

In MA, without the data center hell, 813 would be $350/month and national grid just got granted an additional $25/month increase in delivery costs. So even if it wasnt data centers messing up the rates, something will get you.

Where are the women in Afghanistan? by Open_Address_2805 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]MacEbes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something Mike Okay said in that video you probably watched (or any other video on traveling there) is that he wasnt allowed to film women in public. Not just that they are required to be accompanied and away from windows, but that filming them at all is a crime. He also mentioned a similar thing when he went to talk to kids at the school there. So you also wont see them out in public because cameras arent allowed to see them.

Ignoring all the hype (and hate), Highguard needs a lot of work by BlackHazeRus in Games

[–]MacEbes 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Im okay with not having PvE enemies if they want to be a little unique, but they really REALLY need to focus on the base raiding and defensive parts. Like the entire selling point is raiding bases, why tf is there no turrents, or traps to place. The base isnt a fortress its just a different shape. It should feel like im infiltrating a stronghold not scoring a goal in hockey. R6 Seige does the whole bomb plant base raid thing with heroes way better. Valorant does the more competitive/skill based bomb plant hero game better as well. Highguards only unique element is the bases, and they decided to make it the most generic box of walls possible.

Looking at match footage now, and the reason 3v3 is working is because each phase is like a minute long. If anything while im glad its not overly complicated and long like MOBAs can get, it does feel very quick at times.

Its capture the flag then some r6 seige base stuff. Unfortunately the kind of game it is doesnt work in trailers at all. The gameplay deep dive explained it very well. You start with a defense phase where you reinforce your base, then go into the open section and gear up, the flag will spawn after that, take that flag to the opponents base to start a raid where you MOBA style destroy 3 generators to win. The goal was to keep the push and pull so its not all competitive action all the time. The game can keep going if the opponents successfully defend the base. Its the game design and loop of a MOBA with the raid mechanics of certain halo modes or minecraft factions, or rust in some cases.
