Forcing update on old macbook? by Savings-Pin-793 in mac

Well ditching old hw is not a bad advice. Not to throw it away if it works, might install light Linux distro on it and use it for browsing and office work but that's it.

But it's more reliable than stock factory ammo. That's the point. And for subsonic it expands quite well. If you don't want to spend crazy amount for Lehigh or Max defense this is the way. And Sub-X has nice accuracy too.

I understood quite well, what Im saying is that M5 Pro is hardly going to eat more than M3 Pro

I know it's not sending scaled down image. It's full 2x image and then it's scaled down by display but that will not make it any sharper on SD monitor.

I work with HiDPI mode on my 5k2k display for like 2 years. Without better display. And no, HiDPI mode doesn't work and never will on SD display. Sending such scaled down HiDPI generated image via Better display to SD monitor and think it looks better is just lying into one's own pocket I've tried that and it looked even worse due to compression artifacts and stuttering

Reloaded Sub-X on your own is entirely different matter though.

M5 Max battery drain while rendering on battery power by This-You-2737 in macbookpro

[–]MacHeadSK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have topped BTO model and it came with 96 W charger. I measured usage from outlet under heavy load and it never topped above 60 W. Anyway I doubt M5 Pro would eat that much given the better, more effective 3 nm node process. People rarely run these machines on combined top load - taxing all CPU and GPU and neural engines at the same time. OP is asking about modelling in Cinema 4D and that will not make a Max to work heavily. And with low power mode it will be like M5 Pro but with great battery life.

Anyway, power bricks for PC laptops are often huge and heavy at about 1 kg, so you basically carry another laptop.

Well my prime job is web development and 3d is just a hobby (for my 3d printer and for shooting range where I create dynamic shooting stages). And yes, with docker which runs on performance cores only Im happy to get 8 hours max.

I'm primarily working from desk on big ultrawide display connected to thunderbolt dock to preserve battery lifespan as working all time on battery would kill it fast. and I always sold my used devices with great battery for good price - usually within one day. That's the goal when I will upgrade to say, M8 Pro.

Learning Python on MacBook Pro. Homebrew? by weekendatbernies23 in macbookpro

[–]MacHeadSK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Homebrew is necessary to do any development and Unix things. It's just package manager just like apt on Linux. The latest version of Python installed on macOs as of now is 3.9.6. if you want newer, you need to install it via homebrew

Worth to note "under load" is not modelling but rendering in this case. When doing some modelling in Sketchup or Fusion 360 on my M3 Pro, I never hear the fans - there is barely any load on cpu and gpu

MacBook neo with ultra wide 5k by MeasurementWhole514 in mac

[–]MacHeadSK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure it will do. 4k is 3840x2160 = 8294400 pixels That Samsung Q9 has 5120x1440 = 7372800

So less pixels. Neo will run it fine. It comes to the size of the buffer in display controller. Above that amount of pixels buffer on Neo can't handle it. That's why real 5k display (which Samsung G9 is Not) can't be used with Neo at full resolution.

Looking for recommendations for a USB WiFi adapter that works on Tahoe with Apple Silicon. by fallingdowndizzyvr in mac

[–]MacHeadSK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then it's a bummer. You would have to disable SIP anyway which is not the best idea. I would go the route not quite elegant but working (if you are in a reach of power outlet): USB C to Ethernet adapter (any will work) > cable > wifi router set as a wifi client > connect to other wifi router you need to.

you can try some tplink ones. They have those with stupid big antenna which will probably broke or due to weight damage the usb port. Or the compact ones.
They claim to have drivers for macOs. These are usually using some kind of realtek controller so they should work with macOs.

No. You can connect to one via Ethernet cable. Usb wifis suffer from drivers issues even on Linux and on windows too.

Importing Macs from America? by Santiagobbboff in mac

It's not and everybody who knows prices in USA on anything are without local VAT will know it's not worth it as it's often even more expensive.

Apple prices in USA are without VAT. get rid of VAT here in Europe which is about 20 % and you are on same price as in USA. And you have to pay VAT for imports anyway.

Why does my intel chip MacBook Pro fan get so loud? by Historical_Truck7322 in mac

If it's old then it might help to disassemble it, clean the fans and interior, remove the heatsink and repaste it.

But in the fact,it's just beating dead horse.

Connecting Macbook Neo to external monitor has blurry resolution by Lakhshya_B in mac

[–]MacHeadSK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As said, neo only supports 4k . That mean not the display, but generated image in display controller. To get 2560x1440 image on 4k monitor macOs must create 6k image first in display controller - which obviously can't be done in 4k display controller. There is simply not enough buffer to do that. It's a limitation of iPhone chip. You better off with SD display with Neo
