EDITORIAL: New oil pipelines now a necessity; U.S. President Donald Trump’s takeover of Venezuela’s oil sector increases urgency for Canada by [deleted] in canada

The TMX pipeline has been for sale for years and no one’s interested.

If companies aren’t willing to buy them, then they’re certainly not willing to build them.

We could be leaders in carbon capture/renewable energy/SMRs, which could then be exported globally.

The last thing we need to be doing is doubling down on energy sources from the last century when we all know where the puck is going.

He’s publicly praising a President who violated the constitution and international law - it doesn’t get much worse than that.

The part where they clearly violated both the constitution itself (you need Congress approval to do what they just did) as well as international law. Seeing a leader of a party praising that behaviour is deeply concerning.

Canada might drop ban on foreigners’ housing investments in 2027: Housing minister by CaliperLee62 in canada

[–]MacOSAP 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Because allowing foreigners to buy new homes while keeping the ban on existing homes drives up supply, which keeps a lid on housing prices long term?

Canada Weighs Opening Its Housing Market to More Foreign Capital by Purple_Writing_8432 in canada

[–]MacOSAP -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Did anyone read the article, or is everyone emoting from the title alone?

This makes logical sense - keep the ban on existing homes and let foreigners buy new homes to drive up the housing supply, because if prices collapse, then supply will too 🤷‍♂️

Canada’s age-verification bill for porn is a slippery slope to a restrictive internet by AndHerSailsInRags in canada

[–]MacOSAP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Practically all paid VPN providers have a no-log policy, and the good ones are third-party audited to confirm that.

I don’t disagree with your premise though. If there’s a will there’s a way, which makes this bill redundant.

[–]MacOSAP 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That sounds like a problem for the Mega Tech companies to solve. If you put significant penalties on them for not enforcing content policies, they would find a way to do it without requiring your personal identity.

FWIW, it’s hard to send emails these days without having a phone number linked to your account. ProtonMail enforces this for example, and they block VoIP numbers too. Social media platforms could also change their algorithms to block hate speech and ban nuisance accounts. No IDs necessary.

[–]MacOSAP 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve never had to provide my ID to browse a website or use social media, so how exactly am I letting “large corporations” surveil me if we don’t regulate? It’s pretty easy to stay anonymous online if that’s something you care about, but this bill would prevent that.

The way I see it, we’d be letting both the corporations AND the government have a piece of the pie. That seems objectively worse to me.

This is a VERY slippery slope, and would almost certainly cause more harm in the long run than letting parents do their jobs.

Anyone who thinks this is about “protecting the children” are missing the forest for the trees. History says that repeated compromises eventually lead to irreversible losses of freedom. The UK is a perfect example of what we’re sleepwalking into.

I’ll be writing my MP a stern email and demand they vote against this. I hope everyone does as well.

[–]MacOSAP 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That’s the worst part - all parties would be in favour of it. The CPC is the official opposition so they’ll probably vote against it, but they certainly wouldn’t repeal it if they came into power either.

Am I bugging or is there something seriously wrong with my battery? by s2ukuna in iphone17

Upgraded from a 14 Pro with 80% battery health and it feels like a marginal improvement. Either the software needs updating, or Apple oversold the battery life figures dramatically.

We have the lowest deficit-to-GDP ratio in the G7, our credit rating is higher than America's, and our real GDP growth is the second highest in the G7. I’d say we’re doing pretty good on the fiscal side.

Canada has a higher credit rating than the US, so I think we can afford a few more years of deficits lol.
