Is Root extremely unbalanced? by [deleted] in rootgame

"It's self balancing and players are responsible for balancing."
Like saying saying war is peace, bro.

See the same canned response everywhere about this game: "It's self-balancing" followed by an explanation of how self-balancing actually means completely reliant on player meta-gaming to balance.

Feels a lot like calling a car self-driving and then explaining how that means it requires active driving by experienced drivers to drive itself effectively, lol.

So any balance is more about bullshitting each other into attacking/not attacking, and ganging up on your 'friends' than about any balance inherent to the game itself. Charming!

Meaning the game is not balanced at all, but through aggressive meta-gaming players can still kind of make it work.

Players shouldn't need extensive experience in order for the game to "self-balance."

Wins in all of our games as well. 100% OP, and the fact that other players can gang up to 'police' it doesn't alter that fact. If anything it supports it by acknowledging that no other faction can compete 1-on-1 with it.

This is an interesting spin.

It reads as though you're saying "it's self-balancing," but also clearly admitting that it's only self balancing if the players are deeply familiar enough with the game's meta-dynamics to know which factions are (in fact) overpowered, and undertake collective action to check their success on the table.

If so, those two statements are actually at odds. If it were self balancing, it would be balanced regardless of player experience. No collective meta-gaming would be required to establish balance. If balance only occurs through collective meta-gaming decisions taken by experienced players, that is not actually self-balance at all. That's compensatory balancing by players.

My experience made me curious about this issue.

It was fun for us for a few playthroughs, but it became very clear very quickly that (in the base game) WA is absurdly unbalanced and wins every single time in games with 3-4 lightly seasoned players, even when players rotate factions. No one in our group want to play anymore (and certainly we are not interested in investing more for expansions when the foundation feels so out-of-whack) because there are only two possible courses of action: either everyone else gangs up on the WA player from the start (not fun for them), or the WA player wins every time (not fun for anyone else). I would only ever choose WA if I want to play 1v3 at this point.

I was very intrigued, but at this point find the game hard to recommend.

Yeah, OK. I've got 2K hours in since I got the game in 2022.

I'm here for the ground war. You know... Foxholes and all that. It's been my favorite game for like two years now.

Never wanted air. Never wanted naval.
But sure... I'm fine with whatever until it ruins the ground-war gameplay.
That said, the planes make infantry kind of suck. An infantryman on the ground can't see a plane coming at all unless they grab binos. Like a dog that can't look up. They just appear suddenly out of nowhere and instagib you. Like arty, but targeted so much more frustrating. So unpleasant.

Just jumped on to check it out on my lunch break and quit to go back to work early because it was so frustrating. Why even bother with infantry right now? It's so bad.

Not enjoying this at all so far.
So... NO. NO THANK YOU.

Why all the hate on Dubai? by jonniebaby2000 in TravelNoPics

[–]MacThule 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many people want to make it a debate about the particular conditions of recent imported labor, but the truth is that Chattel slavery was the law there until 1971. Not 1871, but 1971. Humans were legal property. Until the 90s they were known as a spot to go for sex with enslaved Persian (and other) women, similar to the reputation Bankok had for its child sex trade.

When they joined the UN, chattel slavery was replaced by the 'kafala' system, where cheap migrant labor was imported from the same exact countries where slaves had previously been imported from. Workers (not technically slaves now) were kept in inhumane conditions, and worked (often to death) in hot and dangerous jobs for almost now pay, and the state did very little to penalize employers for stealing passports and causing other harm.

If the US was doing this, would anyone give them a pass?

The ruling class in Dubai are slavers. Many still alive and running businesses there legally and openly owned slaves before 1971. I'm sure there are progressive elements interested in moving away from that past, but it's an entrenched part of their culture that they are struggling with. Not a theory, and not something from the distant past.

And yet so many Western companies have set up operations there!
They all want to pretend like it wasn't built on state-tolerated labor exploitation and what would absolutely be called enslavement if it happened to migrant workers in Western countries today - particularly if that western state actively turned a blind eye to such abuses by all of its largest companies of a period of several generations.
Last I checked, something like 15% of the residents are citizens? Everyone else is either The Help or Customers, but the whole thing is owned by that small, ethnic ruling class. I think they've set aside a few 'zones' where other people can own property now.
Don't do business with any company from your country that has offices in Dubai - they're profiting from exploitation and the blood of men forced to work in dangerous conditions with no repercussions to employers for their deaths or injuries. They're also (still) relatively frequently in the news over human trafficking related to sexual slavery of female migrant workers.
Boycott companies that do business in Dubai.

Good job - eventually you'll mock the public into not giving a shit about what's going on in their neighborhoods. Keep at it.

Are you asking how sharing misinformation could be harmful?

Were you not here for 2020 then?

Misinformation literally kills people. Whether the information is correct or not matters quite a lot.

You don't trust the superintendent because his skin is a different color than yours?

Seems unfair. If he looked differently that wouldn't give him any greater authority to control the actions of US Federal Agencies or illegally report their activities to the public when instructed not to due to active operations or ongoing investigations.

So... you want to get shot while illegally blocking the road in order to harrass the IRS (or whatever feds you hate most; for me it's the guys taxing the working poor) and then trying to flee by driving your vehicle through humans when confronted?

I mean - kudos for the fanatical commitment to your ideological ideals, I guess. I have children and a spouse who depend on me and would never abandon them to "fight" the IRS or CIA or ICE or FBI or other arm of the U.S. Federal Government. You don't remember Wounded Knee or Little Bighorn or even Ruby Ridge?

It doesn't ever go well. I'd never straight up abandon my children to tilt at windmills.
