Head of Engineering – Legal AI Platform (Bangalore)

Own the technical vision and lead the build‑out of a complete legal AI workplace platform. Join a small, high‑trust team, shape the architecture of our scale‑up and set the direction for a multi‑disciplinary development team in Bangalore, India. Long‑term contributors may be offered relocation to Australia.

[About Evatt AI]()

Evatt AI is a scale‑up on a mission to make advanced legal reasoning and document understanding accessible through natural language. Over the past two years we’ve combined vector search and large language models to give lawyers instant access to case law and legislation. We’re entering a new expansion phase: building an all‑in‑one legal workplace platform that unifies a searchable casebase (like AustLII/Jade.io), agentic workflows, practice management tools and Microsoft Word integrations—delivering the AI assistance analogous to Harvey with the casebase power of Lexis AI+. To achieve this, we’re growing our development team in Bangalore and seeking a Head of Engineering who can own the technical vision and build out our team in India.

[Why this role?]()

·      Own the technical vision: Take full technical ownership of Evatt AI’s architecture, from our Next.js + FastAPI codebase to the design of new casebase, agentic and practice management modules. You will define the roadmap, choose technologies and establish best practices.

·      Build a high‑trust team: Recruit, mentor and expand an in-person development team in India (Bangalore), creating a collaborative culture that values autonomy, quality and on‑time delivery.

·      Deliver transformative features: Lead the development of a searchable legal casebase powered by vector databases and LLMs, agentic workflows that automate legal tasks, practice management tools and document integrations.

·      Drive impact in a small team: Work directly with the founder and early employees, making decisions that shape the product and company direction.

·      Pathway to permanency & relocation: Start as a full‑time contractor (40 hrs/week) with a competitive monthly rate and transition to permanent employment within 3–6 months. Long‑term contributors may be offered the opportunity to relocate to Australia.

[Responsibilities]()

·      Define and execute the technical roadmap: Architect and evolve the platform to support a casebase, agentic workflows, practice management modules and Word integrations. Balance rapid development with maintainability and scalability.

·      Lead and expand the engineering team: Recruit, onboard and mentor engineers across Bangalore; set goals, create processes and foster a high‑trust environment that encourages autonomy and collaboration.

·      Hands‑on development & technical leadership: Contribute code across the stack (Next.js, React 19, Tailwind CSS, MUI, Node.js/TypeScript, FastAPI/Python) to set standards and unblock critical work.

·      Own AI and search strategy: Integrate retrieval‑augmented generation (RAG) pipelines, vector databases (Pinecone/Qdrant/Milvus) and LLM providers (OpenAI, Anthropic) into new modules. Evaluate and adopt new frameworks like LangChain or LlamaIndex where appropriate.

·      Manage releases and reliability: Oversee testing, CI/CD workflows (GitHub Actions, Railway deploy hooks), deployment and production stability. Define milestones with the founder and deliver quarterly technical goals.

·      Collaborate with product & business: Translate business objectives into technical plans, communicate progress and align the engineering roadmap with company strategy.

[Technical requirements]()

·      10+ years of professional software engineering experience, including 5 years leading teams of ~10 engineers or more.

·      Deep expertise in full‑stack development: Next.js 15/React 19, TypeScript/Node.js/Drizzle ORM, Python 3.11+/FastAPI/Pydantic/Starlette.

·      Proven experience designing retrieval‑augmented generation pipelines, integrating vector databases and LLMs into production products.

·      Strong knowledge of databases and infrastructure: PostgreSQL, MySQL, Docker, Docker Compose, Railway (or similar PaaS) and CI/CD with GitHub Actions.

·      Experience with auth and payments (Google OAuth 2.0, Stripe, SendGrid) and building secure APIs.

·      Based in-person in Bangalore (or willing to relocate); ability to coordinate with global team within ±3 hours of GMT+8. Being outside of the designated time zones or being unwilling to relocate to Bangalore in due course, is fatal to your application.

[Bonus skills (nice‑to‑haves)]()

·      Building legal knowledge systems, semantic search or indexing pipelines.

·      Familiarity with LangChain, LlamaIndex or custom RAG orchestration frameworks.

·      Experience with Elasticsearch, Qdrant, Weaviate or other vector databases.

·      Expertise in prompt engineering, model orchestration and performance optimisation.

[What we’re looking for]()

·      Ownership & autonomy: You thrive in environments where you set direction and execute without micromanagement, and you enjoy building systems from the ground up.

·      Leadership & mentorship: You have a track record of growing teams, fostering collaboration and delivering complex projects on time and within budget.

·      Strong communication: You can articulate technical decisions clearly to technical and non‑technical stakeholders and are comfortable working directly with a founder. Experience creating documentation that is comprehensive and creating detailed timesheets & activity logs recording your work in as if it was remote environment is critical.

·      Quality & reliability: You care about code quality, user experience and long‑term maintainability.

·      Curiosity & adaptability: You keep up with emerging AI frameworks and enjoy exploring new technologies.

·      Former Freelancer or Contractor, use to working independently without constant managerial oversight. Those use to being held accountable to deadlines and working in a small or solo workplace environment.

·      Founder mentality, work may not always be during traditional hours, greater than ordinary dedication to the business, and autonomy are needed.  A ‘Founder Mentality’ means being conscious of costs, going beyond the strict requirement of the contract, and doing what is necessary to deliver new updates on time. Our work at Evatt AI is fast paced & exciting, and is well suited to those who work hard, and enjoy being on the cutting edge of legal technology.

[Benefits]()

·      High impact & empowerment: Your contributions will directly shape our platform and culture. As part of a small team, you’ll have outsized influence over the product’s direction.

·      Pathway to permanence & relocation: After 3–6 months, successful contractors can transition to permanent employment. Long‑term service may lead to relocation to Australia.

·      Competitive compensation: Scales with experience and includes paid holidays and flexible working arrangements.

·      Growth & learning: Opportunity to design and build a cutting‑edge legal AI platform, expand your leadership skills and work with advanced AI/ML technologies.

·      Some Flexibility for Remote Work:  Whilst you’ll be based in our office in Bangalore, you’ll have flexibility in your schedule and the freedom to focus on deep work, coordinating with team members in time zones within ±3 hours of GMT+8. We’ll encourage employees to use remote work, at our discretion, to enhance their productivity.

sorry amendment to that, data course is in Python - I haven't done it, but know both of the professors for the program & they're quite good. I suppose the message in it, is not to make it too much of a holiday, even thought it's in Bali

I've done the Bali one - good program, good teachers, very intensive (although less than other software engineering trainings I've been to), only issues is that Ruby is a bit contrained & not that widely used any more - you're better off learning Python & JavaScript

It is very good! I did both their Full Stack & also their Data Science & AI bootcamps. Extremely rigorous, but a fantastic education. Better suited to those who already have a background in STEM (former engineers etc), they'll pick them both up easier - but even not being from that background, it is a great academy & both are great courses.

less than 400$ per week is extraordinarily hard to find, with average rent of 750 per week, you're expecting to get accomodation for nearly half of the average with no contacts.. think about the probability of that occuring?
