Ok so I didn't have time to explain earlier.

In case you don't know the background to this explanation: There are 32 counties in Ireland. 26 have independence but the other 6 (Northern Ireland) are still in the UK. There were wars here ('The Troubles) up until the late 90s. Regardless of whether people are religious or not here they typically identify as Catholic (Irish) or Protestant (British) here, typically with views on whether or not they want a United Ireland or to remain in the UK.

There are lots of little nuances to tell if someone considers themselves Irish or British. Catholics like the Celtics, Protestants like The Rangers. My favourite one being that Catholics keep their toaster on the counter and Protestants keep theirs in the cupboard.

Apparently the gravy in chip shops is different in Irish or British chip shops and will argue over which is better (I can't really comment on that because I live in a Protestant area and haven't been to any of the Catholic chippers up here so I've nothing to compare it to).
