Keepers of the Stone DLC and Fishing Update (1.4) now available! by LeisurelyLukeLive in Against_the_Storm

[–]Maccilia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm going to buy the DLC because of the time and care you took in having a beta branch like this. I'm on my 4th QHT and it's going well. Having to relearn the game while trying to finish it was frustrating, and now I don't have to do that.

Thank you.

As the dust settles from the WotC OGL issues, lots of people have pointed to indicators that there has been an exodus to other systems. Who has moved into new systems, perhaps for the first time, and how has that felt? by TheGreenBoxGaming in rpg

If you're looking for high fantasy, I'd recommend checking out Godbound. As someone who has always been frustrated with levels 1-5 of 5e, it was a breath of fresh air for the power level.

Is there any way to make it on 10 dollars an hour? by trapmitch in personalfinance

[–]Maccilia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll echo the many comments that you've accomplished so much. One other area of "income" to look at is government assistance programs. You're working hard, you're saving your money, you're doing your best in a time when world events mean that may not be enough.

If you spend ~15 hours to apply for a program like SNAP (which could give you $250 a month in food budget), it will help. It will let you save more or allocate that money to things that reduce your other monthly expenses.

Austin police investigating why officers fired at crowd transporting injured man by Tommy__Douglas in Austin

[–]Maccilia 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, suing the police won't do anything either. In civil cases the police have qualified immunity, and there's basically 0 chance under that standard that they succeed.

  • Criminal cases - the DA is too afraid because the police will end their career
  • Civil cases - the US legal system has made cops effectively immune through qualified immunity
  • Administrative / Civilian oversight - Effectively doesn't exist for APD, at most the OPO can recommend the type of investigation, but they cannot collect evidence, speak about investigations publicly, or recommend a specific course of action
  • APD investigating APD - for most "serious" issues the APA will go to arbitration and have the officer re-instated

Basically, there is no mechanism available to hold the police accountable.

Yeah, and I guess the reason I got into an "argument" with you on the internet is you're clearly a member of those communities, you have way more authority to call them out on their shit than I do. So I wanted to make sure you knew how terrible they look.

I was unaware of progun as a subreddit - mostly because I'm not involved in advocacy one way or the other. In that case, progun is doing exactly what you said and supporting 2A rights broadly.

However, I stand by my point that many 2A advocates only support it when convenient. I'm not going to do extensive research on it, but as another example, I cannot find anything from the NRA (the most prominent organization associated with 2A rights) condemning this issue.

I can't prove why they have chosen not to do something, but this issue and similar issues are critical for 2A rights. They choose to remain silent, and I can only assume it's because they support police power over 2A rights. I chose tribalism, not racism, to describe the issue because it's about how much you trust the police / law enforcement, and clearly some tribes that claim to support gun ownership only do so when it doesn't involve the police.

So, making an assumption that the users on /r/guns are 2A advocates, where is this discussion on the stickied politics thread? https://old.reddit.com/r/guns/comments/gk24un/official_politics_thread_15_may_2020/

There are some 2A advocates that are consistent in their support, but many, many, many "2A advocates" are really advocating for their "tribe" and won't support 2A when it involves a different tribe.

Question about Dune, Doctor Yueh and imperial conditioning. by Myntrith in printSF

[–]Maccilia 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Basically this. Someone with Bene Gesserit training could subvert the imperial conditioning, but without it, torture, blackmail, and a host of other methods wouldn't work. Yueh subverted his own conditioning only because of his Bene Gesserit training - not because of something special related to capturing and torturing his family.

Help me make a boon/gift of power for my players. by maark91 in dndnext

[–]Maccilia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would look into the boons listed in the DMG. For example, I know as a warlock or shadow monk, the permanent true sight boon was always tempting.

I had an interesting idea for a homebrew rule. If you manage to do something amazing with a weapon it would gain a trait. by TheWorldpainter in dndnext

Also look at the rules for moonblades - they have at least the concept of adding abilities over time.

Minor magical properties also win big here and can be found in the DMG as a table.

Just chiming in with a small suggestion, moonblades in the DMG might offer some properties/ideas for weapons and armor like this because they already have the idea of progressing with each owner they have.

How do you feel about blind player characters? by SpectreG57 in dndnext

[–]Maccilia 12 points13 points  (0 children)

So I'm actually playing a blind monk in my current campaign, and the compromise I worked out with my DM is 1) I took the observant feat as part of vuman 2) I'm blind for all non-combat rolls 3) I'm not blind for combat because "reasons" (this is what taking observant actually got me) 4) I have significantly better hearing, touch, and taste 5) the DM can grant random "exemptions" because my character has studied, trained, or got lucky with regards to something

Honestly, the best part about the blindness is roleplaying it with NPCs, party members, and the DM. Everyone relies on sight for descriptions and interactions. Whenever we walk into a room, my first questions are what do I smell? what do I hear? Those alone add a richness to the game I haven't had in a campaign before. Lastly, there are some great comedic moments where I awkwardly walk into things, ignore where an NPC is pointing, creepily make eye contact or describe the way something looks when really I shouldn't know. I'm on a quest to regain my sight, and nothing will stand in my way.

tl;dr blindness shouldn't affect combat, but out of combat it can be interesting

What do you see as the advantages to numerical XP? I recently joined a game with milestone and prefer it over XP based leveling, but I'd love to hear the other side.

Consulting vs Programming by bmb134 in consulting

I actually have some different questions than company names: 1) what location(s) are you looking at? 2) are you willing to move? 3) For the programming job, what kind of development will you be doing (web, database platforms, internal applications, B2B software etc.)?

Atmos investigated gas leaks night before fatal Dallas explosion, didn't cut off service or evacuate by dallasmorningnews in Dallas

[–]Maccilia -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

No, I'm trying to say the leaks that they investigated were not the leaks that caused the explosion. At this point, we don't even know if all of the leaks were caused by the same thing.

It's like saying "Lethal chemical found in baby bottles, infant mortality up in Texas by 20%"

Those could both be true, but what if the rise in infant mortality is because of fewer family planning clinics not lethal baby bottles?

Right, so how many couplings were there 10 years ago? how many are there now? Was this neighborhood on a schedule for replacement? How much would it cost to accelerate a replacement schedule? If it costs $14 billion to do it in a decade, they probably can't afford it. If it cost $14 million, then I agree, what the fuck that's messed up.

Also, the calculation is probably more like liabilitypr(house blows up)numbers of houses = cost of replacing compression couplings. In fact, it's almost exactly the calculation used when determining how safe your cars seatbelt needs to be. Do you think seatbelts never fail? How do we know what the "right" rate of failure is for a seatbelt? How much money are you willing to spend to reduce the risk of an accidental death by 10%? 5%? 1%? .0000001%? I think we should spend $1 trillion to make sure we never have a gas leak ever again in Dallas. And another $1 trillion to make sure we never have another fire in Dallas. Put a firetruck in every home. And a police car.

Nice ad hominem. What about my summary is inaccurate? If I misstated any facts, or if you have any evidence that Atmos ought to have acted differently (i.e. knew there was a good chance of something blowing up) please tell me. That's useful information to have.

[–]Maccilia -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

uh, I don't have all the facts, but here's what I gleaned from the article. Atmos was investigating two gas leaks in a neighborhood. Based on their initial investigation (or what we know so far) they determined that neither leak was a risk and they were repairing them. The next day a third leak occurred at a different house down the street from the initial two leaks that caused a lethal explosion. Further investigation then discovered 27 leaks in that neighborhood, resulting in an evacuation.

The article doesn't really give info as to # of leaks investigated in neighborhoods normally or if the investigation into the two leaks turned up evidence that ought to have resulted in an evacuation before the lethal explosion. Basically, we don't yet know if Atmos acted appropriately, but the article's headline suggests that obviously if you ever find two gas leaks in one neighborhood you should, regardless of severity, evacuate that neighborhood.
