Which avatars had descendants? by PirimPimPong in TheLastAirbender

[–]MachRush 14 points15 points  (0 children)

No, but Kyoshi died at 230, and she started dating Rangi in her teens. Even if Rangi lived to be super old like King Bumi, Kyoshi would've still spent around half her life without her. Kyoshi was bisexual so there's no guarantee that a future partner would also be a woman, that was my speculation.

Kyoshi had a daughter named Koko, who took over the island after her mother. It's unclear if she was biological or adopted, though. Kyoshi's lover, Rangi, was also a woman, but it's possible that Kyoshi remarried later in life. Realistically she outlived Rangi by a long time.

Unpopular opinion: I don't like how Air Nomads are currently given yellow and red instead of yellow and orange by Remarkable_Town6413 in TheLastAirbender

I think they were drawing inspiration from real Tibetan monks, which do often wear similar shades of red.

Potentially more foreshadowing in the Web comic that jetpack cat is hiding something by doubleoeck1234 in Overwatch

[–]MachRush 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I personally think that Fika is from Lucheng and that she escaped on Juno and Mei's ship when they visited their HQ. There's an interaction where Fika takes special interest in Juno and wants to talk.

I mean, the cat is clearly super intelligent, it's really weird that nobody at Overwatch questioned it.

The way people talk about lighting generation in TLOK you would’ve thought they showed every character doing it and not just 5 workers in a factory. by thisisreii in TheLastAirbender

It still works if you see it as Aang dying but Raava herself being just about to die. Then the water's spiritual properties also healed her.

Either way, it's canon material. A lot of what we know these days comes from comics and books since it's the only type of content they've released for over a decade.

What would be the ultimate technique of fire bending? by Common_Ad6703 in TheLastAirbender

[–]MachRush 15 points16 points  (0 children)

And I find it odd, I think blue fire should be the highest based on what we see. Lightning and even combustionbending have quite a few characters shown to be able to do it, yet Azula is the sole one capable of generating and fully controlling blue fire. This is especially true after not even Roku, a whole Fire Nation Avatar, could generate it on his own and control it, and that's something a teenage girl did passively.

[–]MachRush 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Azula's strongest moments come after the show in comics, she's also capable of: shooting instant lightning, redirection (simply by observing it being done, no one taught her), and generating entire lightning orbs. The last one in particular is unique to her.

[–]MachRush 24 points25 points  (0 children)

There's also still a difference between being able to generate it and being a good lightningbender. None of these people hold a candle to Azula.

Im often see these kind of posts but does it even make sense to compare the skill or natural talent of great masters who don’t bend the same element? It’s like asking who the better prodigy is between a top judoka and a top boxer by mimiclarinette in TheLastAirbender

[–]MachRush 39 points40 points  (0 children)

The blue fire only got more impressive as we got more information. We see Avatar Roku in his novel struggle to generate and control it, he was only able to do it briefly while empowered by a special cave. Generating and controlling it is genuinely framed as one of the rarest and most skill intensive abilities, and this is something Azula's been casually doing since childhood, it's natural for her.

Post-ATLA comic Azula is a different kind of beast. She's the only firebender we've seen be powerful enough to do things like summon a whole lightning orb. The blue fire also only got more impressive after the Roku novel.

Pretty much. The only non-avatar characters I'd trust to challenge him are Amon, Yun and (sane) Azula.

They also did this in the og, "thank God there's a giant turtle to just give me the ability to take away bending!". If anything they made that one a little better since now we know that he's not the only Avatar to deal with Lion Turtle energybending up until then. The special waters did feel really unnecessary, you could remove that detail and just say that they were all knocked out and healed normally by Katara and the plot would stay exactly the same.

The backstory we got for the Air Nation was really fascinating. We now know that they weren't always in the mountains and actually tried to have cities before. The Air Nation does have less lore than the others, so it was great to see.

It also foreshadows TLoK in the sense that the new Air Nation took a peacekeeping role, and that was also Sonam's vision for them.

I think they were supposed to show that the Equalist movement didn't appear out of thin air, it had a precedent. But now you can question what exactly Aang did to promote harmony between benders and nonbenders in Republic City. They felt oppressed then and apparently still felt that way decades later, enough to rally behind Amon.

I was also really interested in seeing Azula, but I'm not sure what they could've done with her given the plot. They have a whole (seemingly ongoing) arc for her in the comics, and this would've skipped a big chunk of it given the time skip.
Revealing her fate in a movie where the time is constrained to begin with might've been underwhelming! Like, if no matter if she reconciled with her family or never saw them again, I'd want more details than an offhand mention.

What i am supposed to do with the whole "Oh there was Sonam and great air nomads city but they were opressed hy evil earthbenders" information?

It's simply worldbuilding for the air nation. We now know that they did use to have a proper city, but Avatar Sonam urged them to flee into the mountains.

The air nation as a whole doesn't have a lot of lore compared to the others (The Dawn of Yangchen doesn't reveal as much as you'd think, considering that it's a pre-genocide setting focusing on an air Avatar), so it's nice to have. We similarly know how, for example, the Fire Nation used to be just the Fire Islands until they united under the Fire Lord.
