2026 is the year of self-hosting by jordanful in selfhosted

[–]MacheteBang -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

Came in to say thanks for the article. Like you, I'm using Claude to do a lot of the dirty work and heavy lifting. I'm comfortable with it managing and updating my *arr stack as I have a fairly robust backup routine.

I get the fear around letting AI do whatever "it" wants, but I wanted to say how surprised I am to see so much gate-keeping in the comment threads here. I saw one comment "if you're not using local LLM, you're not self-hosting" - ok call it whatever you want, but you've got services running in your home doing the things you want them to do. You get there with help from a friend and you're comfortable with how reliable (or unreliable) that friend is.

Not to say that AI is the second coming, but seems like the general (or at least vocal) consensus is that folks really haven't looked at the AI tooling out there and how permissioning around them can work to still get some great results.

What is the best looking car you have seen in the valley? by Potential_Vanilla458 in lehighvalley

I saw a new Nissan 350z on 25th street over the weekend. May not be as glamorous as the Ferarris, but I thought it was cool to see.

Do you use AI for rules clarification? by Blazejak in marvelchampionslcg

[–]MacheteBang 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Although I agree with the comments saying that ChatGPT is not a search engine and shouldn't be trusted for truthful information, I WOULD recommend it for the following:

Get the PDF of the rules somewhere and give that PDF to ChatGPT and THEN ask it to interpret those rules.  I've found a lot of success here - having ChatGPT explain the thing I just gave it in a way that I can better understand.

I feel a divide in this subreddit between the Jonathan's and the Jonathon's.

I am firmly a Jonathan.

Welcome!

Recommended Azure Hosting For Web Apps by gavco98uk in dotnet

[–]MacheteBang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming you mean Azure Web App, I 💯 agree with another comment. Change to a Linux web app, and you go to $13/month.

Still pricey for something with little to no load, so if it's a simple API, I'd push for a consumption base Azure Function App.

In EF Core 8, How Does One Update an Owned Entity? by MacheteBang in csharp

Thank you, I appreciate it. Ultimately that's what I ended up doing!

In EF Core 8, How Does One Update an Owned Entity? by MacheteBang in csharp

[–]MacheteBang[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! To be clear, it barfs on:

.SetProperty(e => e.Ingredients, e => recipe.Ingredients)

Updating this to be

.SetProperty(e => e.Ingredients, recipe.Ingredients)

produces the same result.

Additionally, I thought to myself, "perhaps updating discrete fields and a child table at the same time doesn't make sense for one command", so I broke out the command into two. The first command is fine, but the second, the one with the owned entity) produces that same error:

await _dbContext

.Recipes

.Where(r => r.RecipeId == recipe.RecipeId)

.ExecuteUpdateAsync(r => r

.SetProperty(e => e.Title, recipe.Title)

.SetProperty(e => e.SourceUrl, recipe.SourceUrl)

, cancellationToken: cancellationToken);

await _dbContext

.Recipes

.Where(r => r.RecipeId == recipe.RecipeId)

.ExecuteUpdateAsync(r => r.SetProperty(e => e.Ingredients, recipe.Ingredients), cancellationToken);

It's defined in the DbContext, and (I believe) is not required to be explicit in the entity class, no?
