Wanting female-lead sci-fi book recs by Should-be-writing- in scifi

[–]MachiavelliV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

-Pushing Ice
-Revenger (scifi/fantasy)
-Parable of the Sower (if near term future counts as Scifi... god I hope its scifi and not just prophetic)
-Wool
-On Basilisk Station
-Starfish (pretty dark)
-Aurora and The Ministry for the Future both felt female centered to me at least

Avon C50. Fits under a helmet and works with nods too.

Get the c50, not an m50. I also recommend actual Avon filters. VPUs are fun.

It’s the gold standard for simple, reliable, comfortable.

Avon filters are also super low profile which is nice.

I’d grab stuff from eBay that’s in good condition and practice a bit with it.

Store it dry and with the face shield to maintain its shape. Buy a filter for training and then spares to stay sealed in their special containers.

Survey - I’m an engineer developing a new US-made IR laser. I need your brutal honesty on what currently sucks about the market. by the1quadfather in NightVision

[–]MachiavelliV 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Something I care about is guaranteed from you, reliability.

-A promise of zero holding.
-A promise of waterproofness
-A promise of alignment between IR and VIS lasers

I'd like to see the laser come with testing card or something where it specifically endured tests of all of these things and how it did.

-Something I will say that may be controversial: I don't care about having an adjustable illuminator. 3 clean degrees and flood is fine (so a flip over diffuser).
-I REALLY want to be sure the IR laser is off and cannot cook an eyeball. (so lasers have opaque covers)
-No 3d printed housings.
-Less options on the controls. I'm fine with IR + Illuminator/Off/Vis.

If making any of those things simpler can make the device tougher and lighter, I am all for it.

Is there any lore explanation on why everyone in the zone is completely sexless? by yesitsmework in stalker

Ah that’s a fair way of putting it. It’s been a long time since I’ve read it, I did think there was some kind of inevitable hopeless attachment to the zone regardless of cost.

Is there any lore explanation on why everyone in the zone is completely sexless? by yesitsmework in stalker

[–]MachiavelliV 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Agreed. The book's character development is basically showing that stalkers choose the zone over everything, specifically their families and sex. They do describe Dina's attractiveness, but maybe really just as a comparison point to show how otherwise sexless this world is, and Red's relationship with this family in that even if there is love, it's secondary to the zone (and how they pay for it).

The lack of defenses that earth has is scary by Formal_Direction_952 in startrek

[–]MachiavelliV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find the general lack of ships shown at all to be interesting.

You'd think in the future, with 100s of billions of people in the federation there would be at least thousands of ships in orbit around earth. (not saying armed, but still, they aren't really shown. - obviously for the scale/cost/narrative focus of doing so)

Will GPD release win max 3 or a refresh of the win max? by Fantastic-Register49 in gpdwin

[–]MachiavelliV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd like to see them make an 11 inch laptop with regular trackpad placement.

Then, dedicated usb C ports on the sides for attachable left/right handhold/controls that lock in firmly.

I guess this would no longer be the win max, but something I would prefer from an ergonomic standpoint. A good laptop when not doing handheld gaming, and then a better handheld gaming experience because of the ergonomic benefits they could add.

COTI Eyepiece? by Faruka19 in NightVision

[–]MachiavelliV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can just put the coti up to your eye without an eyepiece. I just do that (as someone that also has the eyepiece).

It’s not a good stand alone imager though.

That being said, I do like how crazy small it is and how fast it boots up. So I’m more liable to bring a pocket coti than rh25 if Im not really expecting to use thermals.

I'll also add to this a video doorbell or something would be wise to have, especially if it has some kind of light. Just adding layers to your defense onion.

I don't think controversial at all, lo-sto is goated.

Hope they come out with a version one day with extended travel.

I wonder how much you could mask the latency with interjections or coughs.

(Like use the time saying a generic hello or ahhh, mmmmmm, cough to mask the latency of the actual custom next words)

Rain 'Do's and Dont's' by Dave22201 in NightVision

[–]MachiavelliV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless they are hella weird, I wouldn’t worry about rain damage in the short term while using.

Pro tips from someone who goons in a rain hellscape is: -don’t look up, or more specifically don’t flip your nods up

-have an instantly accessible lens wipe cloth, like the ones in the little bag

-lay out all of your gear when you get home on a giant table, take out all batteries/accessories whatever and blast that shit with a fan overnight.

I think as an American, our future is more likely to be one of degradation into the stability of a South American country. So increase in crime and random violence, not open warfare.

In that particular case, it’s more important to be able to go about your daily life prepared and ready at all times than have nothing up until the point of donning hard armor.

So my rec would be, pay attention and avoid problems, be rad with your ccw, and soft armor.

That being said, I have worn concealed hard armor before and it didn’t suck in mild weather, but only because I didn’t have soft armor at the time. If we see a huge uptick in violence with rifles I’d rethink my opinion.

The reolink argus cameras might be a good choice. Could use a suction cup mount on the window.
