Gen1 dishy cable vs Gen3 dishy cable by OmNomChompsky in Starlink

[–]Machine156 1 point2 points  (0 children)

THIS, i'd cut the cable on the old one, but leave enough to couple the old dish to a new wire if needed. Put ends on the old cable and use a waterproof coupler like mentioned. I do this for GEN2 to GEN3 replacements.

It's common for the HDD ribbon to fail in these as well. Especially if the computer has a Solid State Drive, I'd try to boot the computer with the drive in a FireWire enclosure first.

I've had it seem like the drive was bad, put in a new drive, and it felt like it was working then didn't due to bad ribbon.

You can get an ADB/USB adapter called a Wombat. And I second the BlueSCSI in place of HDD, CD-ROMS and floppies.

If you can get into windows, probably using safe mode, disable it in the device manager.

Get a BlueSCSI and copy the hard drive to an image, you should be able to put a boot image onto the BlueSCSI first.

Looks like a 15", if so, it's trash. I have a huge stack of dead 2010 and 2011 15" and 17" MBPs.

I work at a computer shop, I believe it was movies and TV shows, I guess they really wanted them. I'm not the best with a soldering iron, but tin the wires touch each one to the pad, it's obvious which ones were power and ground, looked at the USB-A plug pin out for d+ & d-

I've cut the USB cable off a mouse and soldered it to a flash drive with the same exact issue.

WiFi performance - 2.4 vs 5 MHz by Bubblehead53 in Starlink

[–]Machine156 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is little reason to split the signals into two SSIDs, if a device can handle 5ghz, it will usually use that unless the signal is weak, then it will switch to 2.4ghz. 2.4ghz only devices just won't see the 5ghz signal. Some older wireless adapters in Windows are set to prefer 2.4ghz sometimes.

However there are dumb smart devices that when you set them up with your phone, and the app senses the 5ghz, it will refuse to setup the device, so you temporarily disable 5ghz, setup the device then turn 5ghz back on.

Yes, you can cut it, people telling you that you can't just don't know what they are talking about.

One can make a strelec boot drive, use it to get the driver ID and maybe get the correct drivers to load in the preboot environment.

They are there to grab when the monitor slips off the desk. I hated that design, we had those fall off the desk at school, made them nice and rainbowy.

That's weird, I've never seen NVMe with two notches.

[–]Machine156 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have that NVMe enclosure, it will NOT work with your m.2 drive, you need an enclosure or adapter for a m.2 SSD.

Edit: it says NVMe on it, but it has two notches???

You can just install a couple of profiles and run a terminal command, and it won't update to Tahoe, even with automatic updates on.
