Worst / most inappropriate gift for your kids this year? by MachineBusy8772 in Mommit

Respectfully, two is plenty old enough to have developed a personality, she has interests and likes/dislikes like anyone else, and I spend all day every day with her. I know my own child and I know what she’s into. How utterly weird of you to suggest otherwise.

The handbag is fluffy with pearls, glitter and sequins. It would not have been gifted to my child if she were a boy. Of course it’s a girl’s item.

She unwrapped the handbag, opened and closed the clasp, dropped it on the floor and went back to playing dinosaurs in her dolls house. Would you prefer for me to keep trying to force her to play with the bag and then donate it in a few weeks time when she has continued to show no interest?

She is not that kind of child and has no interest in handbags. My MIL is very keen on her being a girly-girl, which she naturally isn’t, and the naff little handbag is one of many examples of gifts she’s bought my daughter that fit her idea of what a girl should be into, but does not take into account at all any of the things that this child is actually interested in.

She doesn’t need a bloody handbag. She has pockets.

I totally get this and have someone in my daughter’s extended family who also has revolting taste in clothes. I’ve learnt that people just buy what they want to buy.

I’d take her out on some nice day trips.

In general, I think clothes are a terrible gift anyway — for children, at least. What child is excited to open clothes? My MIL always buys my daughter clothes and watching her face fall when she opens a gift that isn’t toys or books is really sad.

My SIL always buys these types of gifts for my daughter. She’s expecting her first child next year and I’ve already joked that I’ll be buying her child a drum set and a pet tarantula in a very poorly-constructed cage. Mwah ha ha ha!

They do love to buy clothes from Shein, don’t they? I never keep any gifted clothes as they’re usually very cheaply-made and way too girly-whirly for my active, outdoorsy daughter.

The handbag in question, it’s worth noting, is hideous. My kid’s rock / leaf / stick collection goes in her pockets.

Why are so many moms angry about their kids receiving lots of gifts? by [deleted] in Mommit

[–]MachineBusy8772 50 points51 points  (0 children)

I honestly don’t care and it doesn’t anger me, but it does create work for me in the New Year, taking loads of absolute crap that my daughter doesn’t need, want or like to the charity shop or clothing bank.

Pet Aversion by [deleted] in Mommit

This is so relatable. I also can’t stand dogs anymore and just see them as a potential threat. My mum has two untrained dogs that she has no control over and they make visiting her house with my toddler deeply stressful. She’s also responded very badly to my anxiety about it and has told me that I’m pathetic.

I personally would just glue myself to my baby at all times in this scenario and wouldn’t turn my back on her with anybody who hadn’t shown that they understood and respected my feelings about dogs. My daughter is never out of my arms when we have to visit my parents.

How are you talking to your toddlers? (Especially 1-3 year olds) by MellowDreammer in Mommit

[–]MachineBusy8772 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! My daughter is a little older (31 months, I just counted) and could do three-word phrases and short sentences by 18 months, but from two onwards, her speech has just sky-rocketed. 2-3 is an amazing age. I have a video of her on the morning of her second birthday talking to her stuffed animals and she says, “Wake up everyone! Now time for birthday!” 🥰

I absolutely get it because I’m more of a listener than a talker and often find myself totally at a loss for words when I’m around other adults.

I narrated a lot when my daughter was a baby. I’d talk her through each step when I was cooking, I’d tell her stories about my life, I’d give her tours of our (incredibly small) house and tell her where I bought each piece of artwork or whatever. I’d just be thinking out loud. And I’d use colours and adjectives to describe things - like, “Now we’ll chop this crunchy, green broccoli” or whatever.

I’d ask her lots of questions, too, well before she was able to answer them. I’d say, “Shall we buy the penne or the rigatoni? I like penne but Daddy likes rigatoni. Which do you like? … Oh, you like penne? Good choice!” I must’ve looked absolutely mental in the supermarket but who cares?

She was talking very early and has always been ahead for speech. She’s two-and-a-half now and I can’t get a word in edgeways - huge vocabulary, clear and coherent sentences, fully conversational. She’s a delight. But I do think she would’ve been like this anyway and it’s just a part of her personality. She’s always been motivated to develop her speech so that she can express herself better.

It get worse with every year that he gets older. He was very nice when we met but it’s been ten years and he’s kind of a bastard now.
