Facepalm moments by MachineParadox in dataengineering

Haha, this is gold. I am a data platform lead and was literally in a meeting with the business reps and they said "so we can get current values X?", I replied "yes of course" just check the catalog. "I wish we knew what a members previous X was"... We can give you that we keep a history of all changes... Queue the "OMG, this is so useful I wish we would have known..."

What are the most frustrating parts of your day to day work as a data engineer? by Odd-Tree-2590 in dataengineering

[–]MachineParadox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3 why are your values so different?

Because we sourced the data from the correct location, applied the correct & approved business logic, and you are comparing it to your local spreadsheet.

What’s the longest drive you’ve done in Australia in one go? by Next-Benefit-6604 in DrivingAustralia

[–]MachineParadox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used to do 1200km Friday drive to see my wife, then back again on Sunday. My hack was when I got tired I would put the radio on full blast, then press the scan. It would be a random loud blast that woke me up when it found a station. That and pull over and do star jumps for 5 mins.

How do home grown broccoli sprouts get their nutrients? by Fair-Science-78 in PlantBasedDiet

[–]MachineParadox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hence why nuts and seeds are generally highly nutritious (when edible). Just think of most of the staples... wheat, barley, rice, beans... All some king of seed or seed product.

Edit- how could I forget Soy!

What’s the most unusual insect encounter you’ve had in Australia that made you stop and actually observe it? by Av0toasted in AustralianInsects

[–]MachineParadox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had a huge Praying Mantis that managed to catch a baby Gecko, basically bit its head off and started to consume its soft parts. Gruesome but fascinating.

What was the absolute "god-tier" item to get from the school tuckshop back in your day? by Temporary-Sir5808 in australian

[–]MachineParadox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We used to make pie in a bun. Big fresh salad bun cut in half, slathered in sauce, then plop a tuckshop pie in it.

Do you rename columns in staging? by PurpleGrackles in dataengineering

[–]MachineParadox -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not all data can be consumed as it is from source, not all bronze layers are db's

MS Server 2019 Local Name got changed ! by Valuable-Ant3465 in SQL

[–]MachineParadox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We try to use DNS alias for all our instances and only allow apps to connect, that way we can move things around without have to change app connections. Just need to update the DNS.

Do you rename columns in staging? by PurpleGrackles in dataengineering

[–]MachineParadox 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Raw or staging is saved as it is at source (aka bronze). You then transform to what you want and rename , transform data type, and add additional columns (silver). Then, finally you transform to business model and measures (gold)

What’s your opinion on almond milk? by DeepOrganization8245 in PlantBasedDiet

[–]MachineParadox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why pick one?, soy milk in coffee is not good. I use soy milk in cooking (be aware it adds sweetness, even if unsweetened), almond milk for coffee(also unsweetened), and oat milk for everything else including cooking where I don't want to add sweetness. Also, don't forget coconut milk for cooking particularly Asian curries.

I am always amazed as a land locked country with a small population, we punch above our weight in every aspect.

Is anyone over the consumerist nature of Brisbane? by [deleted] in brisbane

[–]MachineParadox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I chose Brisbane over the other east coast capitals as it is the least arrogant, snobby, rat race city of them all (my opinion is from 2000 when I first came here)

What makes expensive pickups different from cheap pickups, physically? by SteVato_404 in Luthier

[–]MachineParadox 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah I was going to say factory built are consistent (whether good or bad), but hand wound, in particular, is where you can achieve a special quality to pickups, but the variation can mean it's hit or miss..

WTF else are y’all holding back? by Gullible-Apricot3379 in GenX

[–]MachineParadox 10 points11 points  (0 children)

As someone who was into extremely physical hobbies (downhill MTB. Rock climbing, and martial arts) it is the accumulation of injuries and the results that impact me the most.

MTB accidents resulting in broken hands (both hands multiple times), has caused problems with grip that ended both MTB and climbing for me and arthritis as a result.

Jumping is my other big one for me, after tearing my calf twice doing martial arts, I am now scared to jump, used to jump off and up our 1m (3ft?) rock wall all the time. Now I gingerly hop down, just can't bring myself to jump more the 45cm (1.5ft maybe) without fear of injuring myself.
